PSP help- bricked?

My friend gave me his old psp phat because he wasn't playing it anymore. When I looked into it, it had a bunch of junk corrupted files and other stuff to play pirated games with. Well I backed all that up just in case and I reset the psp to factory settings.

However, I still can't get the psp to upgrade firmware now. I rented Crisis Core and whenever it tells me to update I accept, and I am brought to a blank menu screen. The top right corner has the update symbol and I can press x and o, which brings up another blank grey menu screen, its the screen that usually has an error or message in it but instead there is no text. I've tried some homebrew stuff to flash the patch on, but I also get error messages when I try to load them.

Is my psp fucked?

Your best bet is what is called a 'Pandora Battery'.

Just look it up on Youtube. Basically you convert your current PSP battery into an 'unbricker' device. It converts the battery into a service battery that you can use to completely unbrick everything.

You might need another PSP to do it though (as you need a working one right now), but I'm not positive. The new applications for Pandora Battery might let you do it with only your PSP.

Um is there a solution that doesn't require money?

If you have a friend that has a PSP you can turn his into a Pandora Battery... which doesn't require you to buy anything.

From what I gathered from the site was that there is something you need to buy to do this. Either way, I don't have a friend with a psp atm, I'm in california while my friend who has one is in london.
