Once again I'm going from 0 for the worst track to 10 for the best with the rest sprinkled about on that spectrum.

Also, these are some strange number ones.

    Bedlam - Ch-check it out

    Score: 0/10

The instruments are identical to the original (in fact did you find an instrumental version or something? because if not that is impressive) but you have utterly butchered the vocals. I felt both wild rage and tearful depression at hearing you hurt this track. Rapping is hard, it doesn't sound like you've recognised this, It is more than just talking quickly.

This sounds horribly harsh, but this isn't really a cover so much as a karaoke version of the Beastie Boys.

Mullitt the Wise - Just Like Starting Over
    Score: 7/10

The vocals are on the high side, so much so that it did cause the odd wince from. I'm not sure if this was something intentional or just unfortunate compression. Aside from that though, you've done quite well here and I don't think it was an easy song to do but you've taken it and done something interesting. Nice.

Evil Multifarious - The Lion Sleeps Tonight

    Score: 10/10

This didn't really catch me but was quite pleasant to listen to. You aimed for a quiet acoustic sound and you've perfectly achieved it.

    Amphetamine - Sex and Candy
    Score: 5/10

This isn't a track I know, looking at wikipedia seems to indicate that it didn't get a UK release, which is weird if it was a number one.

Having listened to the original though, I feel you've not really done much with this song. It's a very direct cover with no personal spin. Still, it's technically fine.

    Simon Moon - Champagne Supernova
    Score: 3/10

There's a horrible quiet buzzing through this (mainly audible at the start) and your vocals just are not loud enough. For the last half of the song you can't really hear the vocals at all. It could have been good, but those two complaints really ruin things for me.

    Victory is mine!

Now accepting suggestions for next week's theme. One suggestion I received was "Devil's songs" - songs about or containing the Devil, one of which will obviously have to be "The Devil Went Down to Georgia."

Another theme I thought of was "covers of covers." That is, do a cover of a cover that you particularly like.

I think covers of covers is a very bad idea as it encourages people to recreate another track rather than put a unique twist on things.

I like the devil idea. Lots of songs out there give the devil his due.

If we do devil tracks then I'm doing Robert Johnson or the Stones

If we do covers of covers I'm doing the cover of the Shinedown cover of Skynyrd's "Simple Man"

I don't know if we need to claim the songs or not, just thought I'd share.

Also, I've only been playing guitar for a few months, so either one of them is going to suck.

    That is all.

    Here's what I do...
The Vac - My Science Fiction Epic
Fortune Pancakes - My Gag-A-Day Comic
  • Evil MultifariousEvil Multifarious Registered User regular
Yeah, let's go with Devil songs.

Good, because if I do sympathy it's only four chords, and a background piano track, unless I want to get risky and try the solo.

Dang that is some harsh critisim.

t evil: are you really expecting some dude on a forum to do better than a professional artist? It just seems like your expectations are a little high so if you could go into some detail I would appreciate it.

t mojo: I did use the instrumental as I dont play any instruments. I know this puts me at a bit of a disadvatage but my goal in participating is to get better. (which I feel Ive done consistantly)

Actually Ive been trying to collab but the dude I was talking to hasnt sent me anything yet. So if someone wants to team up I would love to do some vocals even if its just backup. Anyone interested can feel free to pm me.

EDIT: Ok Ive been thinking about it and your critisims make a little more sense now. You dont have to elaborate if you dont want to but right now everything helps me.

Man, I'm really tempted to do Orbital's "Satan," but I don't know where, exactly, I'd go with it.

just in case you missed it, that was a guest judge whose scores I posted when he emailed them to me.

I think he was suggesting that you had to do something beyond just reproducing the song, something to make it a cover instead of a replication of the original.

Yeah, the only song I came up with was Cake's "Satan Is My Motor," and I just didn't have anything in me that wasn't (more) half-assed (than usual). Plus last week I had midterms, and this week I'm giving a midterm, so...

Does it purposefully not have vocals, or are you just afraid you won't do vocals well? Because I can drop some vocals for you if you want (with harmonies!)

Well then don't let the thread die? Pick a category for next week.

Additionally, how do people feel about two week categories? With other obligations, i've found it hard to finish something in just one week.

I'm down with that balancing school and work makes learning and recording a new song every week tough

    I would prefer this, actually.

Or have a competition that goes two weeks, but a week in we start another one which lasts two weeks, etc, so there is some overlap... you might not be able to enter in all of them, but it gives you more time to work on one, and the people not interested in that competition have another option sooner.

Ok So how about Jokerman suggests the Topic for this week(let's make it go till next sunday the 9 th) and then we'll have an open cover what ever you want to go until the 16th or swap them so Jokerman's selection get's a little more time. When you enter state which topi you're going for.

    Sounds like a plan.

2 week long categories starting each week sounds good. I think an open category isn't though. Because if there is an open one, virtually no one will pick anything from whatever jokerman picks.
