Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
Help me set up WRT54G as a router while I ask dumb questions
Ok, so my broadband provider supplied me with a re-branded netgear modem/wifi router. It's worked OK for the past year but never got a super wifi connection downstairs. Now I guess it's on it's way out or something because we've completely lost the signal downstairs (although it's still pretty strong upstairs, the floor that the modem/router is on).
So, I have an older Linksys WRT54G that I used to use with our old broadband modem that didn't have a wifi router built in. What I'd like to do is configure this as a wireless router, so that I can position it somewhere else upstairs (the office which the netgear modem/router is in sticks way out at the front of the house, so ideally I'd like to position the linksys router in a more internal position upstairs so that it gives better coverage for the whole bottom floor).
I've plugged it in, reset it (so the password to access 192.168.1.1 is current admin/admin so I can access the configuration stuff) and checked that I can connect to it via my laptop wirelessly (which I can). What I don't know how to do is to go from here to getting it to connect to the netgear modem/router via wifi. I have the network key for the modem/router but no idea how to actually configure the Linksys to connect to it.
I'm presuming this is a reasonably simple endeavour, but as I said, I'll probably ask dumb questions and have to get you to repeat steps in more detail until I get it right. I've had a google around and found a few threads that probably contain all the information I need but I can't decipher their brief steps. In the meantime, I'll try and provide all the information you need assuming you tell me how to find that information
Ah, I had hoped there'd be a way to do this without having to install new firmware on the devices. Assuming there isn't, will that work if I just install DD-WRT on the Linksys or would I have to install it on the Netgear as well?
Ok, forget all that just now. I've just run some network cable from the WRT54G to the Netgear modem and am using it as a gateway. The signal on it is so strong that even up in the office the wireless signal is stronger downstairs than it ever was with the crappy Netgear modem.
However, I now have a new and 'exciting' problem. Everything is working fantastically like this. Both our Apple laptops and even our Xbox 360 can connect to the internet with wild abandon through the linksys WRT54G. iPhone, not so much. It can connect to the WRT54G and even access the admin control panel through Safari but for some reason can't quite reach the delicious broadband internet on the other side. WRT54G is currently set up at factory defaults, no WEP password or otherwise needed to access it, default ip - 192.168.1.1 - and Advanced Routing is set to Gateway. Have two iPhones (old Edge and new 3G), both of which can connect to and access the router's admin control panel by pointing the browser to 192.168.1.1 but neither of them can get internet while connected to it.
To further baffle and confound, neither of them can connect to the internet via the Netgear router/modem anymore either, while they could connect perfectly happily through it before (provided they were within it's crappy range). Just for completion's sake, the laptops can still access the internet by connecting directly to the Netgear wifi signal.

What did I do wrong?
