I just beat the game. Huge, huge disappointment. Oh, it was really fun to play, but they don't answer any questions. Nothing makes any sense. As far as I know, they didn't answer the following:
They don't answer who you are. They don't answer why there was the second explosion. They don't answer what the Wish Giver was. They don't answer why you went and got those documents in those labs and what was in them. They don't answer who Sterlok is. You never meet Sterlok. They just don't answer a ton of stuff!

I went through the game expecting at least some explanation and got nothing. There was basically no plot and just shooting. None of the endings made any sense, either. Apparently, you have to read the book and watch the movie just to figure out anything. And the answer, according to Pancake, from those was?
    Aliens.

I think my post got lost somewhere further back, and I'm still waiting for any help. My game continues to crash constantly, and I really don't feel like reinstalling or patching as I'll lose my considerably advanced place in the game. If there's anyone that could make a fixed .exe file for the patched International no DVD version, then I would be extremely happy. Like I said, my chances for internet use are far and few between, and the only connection I can get to is a measly 56k for the moment.

Giganticus, any chance you could help a fellow gamer out?

Give me your email so I can send it to you.

I think your problem is you did the wish giver ending, which is always a bad ending.

You got one of the crappy endings, then.

Also, pretty sure there is information about the lab documents in your PDA.

If you do the stuff to get one of the "true" endings, then you find out who Strelok is along the way.

I keep restarting this game. I want to finish it, but I keep losing interest around the time you reach the Duty base.

It's a fun enough game, but I dunno. The deaths seem cheap at times and armour and weapons degrading without being able to fix them kind of sucks.

I guess I'll wait for another patch.

Play multiplayer. Seriously, I haven't read one post about someone playing multiplayer yet. It's really damn fun! It's not a cheap addition to the game! So unless you're just a dirty pirate, you people have no excuse! Hell, after participating in the multiplayer beta, I actually got excited for the full game for the online play alone.

The barkeep gives you a bit of a summary of what's in the documents whenever you complete those missions and hand them over.

How to get the "true" endings:
To get the true endings, you have to do the "Talk to Guide" series of missions when you get them, and then explore a bit more when you get to the area where the Wish Giver is. The way you really need to go is on the lower floor before you go up to the Wish Giver room.

    MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS:
You are Strelok. The Zone, the anomalies, the mutants, everything is caused by an experiment run by a group of scientists who linked their minds together in an attempt to control humanity. Everything is a side effect of their device altering reality. The fact that this is taking place in Chernobyl has nothing to do with it. The scientists picked this area because after the '86 accident, the place was evacuated and there would be no one to get nosy. The second explosion was also just a random ocurance and has nothing to do with them. However when people started investigating after the second explosion and artifacts were discovered, people starting to poke around and cause problems for their experiment.

Strelok and his group were digging around to uncover the truth when they got too close. Strelok at the very least got hit with the Brain Scorcher when venturing too close to the center of the Zone. What this actually does is zombify people so the scientists can brainwash them and send them back to accomplish secret missions without their knowing. Unfortunately, "something" happened and you were given the order to kill Strelok (yourself). This conflict broke the mind control but at the same time gave you amnesia.

The Wish Giver was, again, a side effect of the experiment, and sort of a red herring. Using brainwashed stalkers the scientists "spread the word" that something at the center of the zone grants wishes. Something like that keeps everyone in the area focused on that and not bother to explore more to figure out what's really going on.

Crap I'm stuck again! I think I may have done something to majorly fuck up the game.

I got the quest from the barkeep to get the documents from the lab (X-18 I think?), so I went to the mobile lab and got the special suit. Then instead of going to the first lab, I went into the second without the headgear and de-activated the brain scrambler by just using medkits the whole time and got the ghost suit. Now when I try to get the headgear it says something about helping the scientists and needing to calibrate the prototype. I escorted him outside into the swamp and did that part, then the doctor inside says something about just needing to make a few adjustments to it..but now he won't give me anything. Am I fucked or did I just miss something? I need that headgear to get through the forest :(

I enjoyed the game, but I still would have loved to play the original concept of it being one huge open game world. There were no levels. It was all just one map. And the thing is, some of the code and materials are probably still in the game. The vehicle code and materials are, as is some elements from co-op that were shown off originally. I'd try to do it myself, melding the world back together into one huge map with the working vehicles, but I don't have any skills nor know anyone who does. Anyone here who does? It's a project I'd love to see started once those tools are out.

I've noticed that it seems like a number of people who are having plot mission related problems tend to do things out of order. Despite the open-endedness of the world, the game's plot progression is actually fairly linear. That's kind of the reason why there are areas with lethal psi-emissions, so that you turn back and do the mission to get the helmet first. Besides, with how many other bugs are in the game, it's obviously going to be fairly risky to do things in a way other than intended.

Why does every fun FPS with a story have to have the ninja monster? Always in closed dark spaces, move way faster then you can, may or may not be able to climb walls, make horrible screaming noises as it comes at you, and as a bonus, is invisible. That's not cool.

Okay, I really need yalls help

So I bought Stalker today, after pursing the minimum specs and talking to you guys and deciding I could run it. So I install it and then naturally try to run it.

... To which Im greeted with an error message. In German.

From what I can tell, its a virtual memory issue, as thats what babel fish was kind enough to tell me. And I was wondering if any of you had had the same issue and resolved it, so maybe I could follow suit, as Im dying to play this game.

    EDIT:

    GOD DAMMIT.
Here's my "OMIGAWD AI IZ AMZING!!'1" story.

I was is a hurry to get to the trader and tell him I completed a mission after hours of grueling work, I only had a couple hours (game time) to report back. I exit the tunnels and about 1200 bullets later, I'm running the home stretch. Only about 400 more yards to go. I'm taking a back route to circumnavigate all the bandits guarding the main roads when I hear the sound whimpering of dogs. I cautiously take a few steps forward, only to find that it's two fairly harmless dogs, just sitting there near the brush. No biggie. Another two steps, both the dogs simultaneously fixed their gaze at me. Okaaaay. At this point I'm fairly close.

Out of nowhere, 10 dogs just fucking JUMP out of the bushes. ITS A TRAP! I yell HOLY FUCK at the top of my lungs and before I could draw my pistol and get 3 shots off they've surrounded me and are now ripping me to shreds. It takes all of about 5 seconds before I'm on the ground, being ripped apart by this ravenous pack of canines. I watch my body get tugged around for a moment, being devoured. Slowly the dogs lose interest in my corpse and walk away. Cue rain, creating a dramatic effect.

I quit in frustration. Those fuckers are like raptors.

The two encounters I've had with Bloodsuckers have been comically anti-climatic. First was in a dark underground section - ooh! scary - except, I round a corner emerging from a narrow doorway into a larger room and the bloodsucker is there, so I back into the doorway and instead of coming right for me he just lurches around the room while I take potshots at him from the doorway. The second time was near the Bar, out in the open, in the middle of the day. He was just poncing around in the middle of an open space picking flowers or some crap. I shot at him, he shat his pants, panicked and fled for the nearest radioactive warehouse.

It's like discovering Big Foot only to discover that he's not a ferocious man-eater but is instead a nature loving, omnivorous lesson for all of mankind.

Yeah, that's actually a very good write-up of the story. It's quite interesting how tempting it is to hare of after certain plot points that open up the game world, and actually ignore the story based ones. And it's not bad game design, it's done very well imo.

I've spent too much time asking for fixed exe files and not enough time talking about how fucking awesome this game is. There's just no real way of describing how cool and how fucking god damn scary this game gets. So, I suppose I'll try and ramble it out as best I can:

F.E.A.R. was scary, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is the first game to make me jump in my seat and squeal. My first encounter with a Bloodsucker, in the middle of a firefight no less, made me squeal like a six year old girl with pigtails. I squealed even louder after I dispatched the first Bloodsucker, ran back into the industrial complex I was fighting near, jump into a building, only to be met by two of the horrible mutants which had made short work of the Stalkers who had been camping in that building. Those things are terrible. They scare the ever loving hell out of me, and bullets are a minor inconvenience for them.

And it isn't just the scares that make it awesome, it's the gunfights. I like the fire fights, but there have been two I've been in so far that have been possibly the most intense. The first was when the military was attacking the Stalkers near some old warehouse installation place where I was supposed to find and talk to Mole. Very difficult but very worthwhile, especially when I jumped inside the buildings and fought my way through them. Tight corridors make for some rather heated battles.

The second, and my favorite, gunfight was when I had to rescue a Duty Stalker from a bandit base. I ended up jumping down into the sewer system and slogging through the dirty water until I was able to climb up into the base, sneak around, and then end up in insanely difficult engagement that required a lot of running and a lot of moving through buildings.

I don't think I've ever played a game (PC or otherwise) that provided the level of entertainment that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. does. The atmosphere of the game is perfect for showing you that this place you are in is basically a hellish nightmare. Everything is dirty and old and decrepit, there are irradiated mutants everywhere that seem to have an unhealthy desire to devour your flesh, and god knows how many anomalies that will crush or rip your frail body to peices.

The 'Man Made Hell' tag they use in their advertisements is very fitting.

You know what I think makes the game scary? I think it's that it's unscripted.

When you're playing a heavily scripted game, you can think "oh, well, if I go in that closet, there's gonna be a mutant right behind me" - but here, none of the monsters are scripted. They spawn half a mile away from you and then just go about their fucking business. When you hear a noise you know one's about, but you've no idea where or what it's about to do.

So, I think i got myself stuck fairly late in the game. I'm at
The X-16 lab, where I've got the documents and I have to head for the secret tunnel, but for some reason I decided to take the ladders down the elevator shaft earlier, and not the elevator. The ladder to go back up at the bottom is broken, and I can't even reach it if i push a box over. I can't see any controls to bring the elevator down either.

Am I retarded and just missing something, or will i be starting over?

you're not retarded, cause if so then i'm retarded too - and we can't have that.
go all the way back to the room where you got the documents. explore around in that room, you'll find the exit.

Some of the translated Russian from the Stalkers telling eachother stories includes anecdotes about a bloodsucker who used to visit their camp nightly for some vodka and would speak to them. They always kept a spare in case he came by.
So that's why he had a bottle of cheap booze on his corpse.

    Huh.

so, what other endings are possible, i got these three:

    1) if you go straight to the wish granter and make a wish - in my case "i want to be rich", there is a rain of coins and the power plant collapses on you.

    2) doing the ghost -> guide -> doc -> pripyat stash line of quests leads to the additional underground level and the c-conscienceness; if you choose to cooperate there is an ending with you joining the c-conscienceness.

    3) if not, there is an additional level on the top of chernobyl (and very fun sniper battles!) ending with destroying the c-conscienceness and the end of the zone.

    MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS:
You are Strelok. The Zone, the anomalies, the mutants, everything is caused by an experiment run by a group of scientists who linked their minds together in an attempt to control humanity.
it's worth mentioning that they actually only wanted to cure humanity from negative desires - greed, hate, etc.
which somewhat justifies you joining them as a possible ending.

There are also four more, but I only know three:

    1) "I want to rule the world" - The Wish Granter absorbs you into itself in a very painful looking fashion. Since it "rules the world," being part of it, in a sense, so do you.

    2) "Humanity is corrupt and must be controlled" - You are placed inside an endless black void where you can do no harm.

    3) "I want the Zone to disappear" - You are blinded and can no longer see the Zone.

So I finally got around to playing some multiplayer. It's laggy as sin though, so that really takes the dampener off of things. But it plays quite nice, and certainly the best use of lighting so far in a multiplayer game.

Ehhh, I'm pretty sure a -couple- of instances are scripted.

I haven't had any lag yet, but it is super fun. I do love the lightning, as it has the day to night cycle (regardless of your graphical settings, it seems), as well as a weather cycle. It makes for good fun.
