    It makes an awesome paperweight.

You could cover up the Apple logo and then appear in commercials and cover the screen with a PC screenshot.

look, programs generally don't crash on my mac. maybe your mac, and that's probably because you're trying to do stupid shit. only program that crashes on my mac is safari, and that's when im actually putting it through its paces. and then i just avoid doing whatever it was that i was trying to do, or switch to a program i know can handle it better. some things can only run in IE (like old work-related programs) and others work best in FF. i switch to them then. otherwise, why is it so hard to just stop doing the thing that causes the program to crash?

  • CalliusCallius Registered User regular
Monoxide, please do the following test.

Bind a macintosh to a domain environment, connect to a network share which is running DFS, set the computer to lock it's screen when going to sleep, set the computer to sleep mode and wait 15 minutes.

Try and wake it up. See what happens.

Also, another downside to "macs as work computers."

    Lock a linux box = Command + L
    Lock a windows box = Windows Key + L
Lock a mac box = click on the apple button then click sleep (make sure you have lock on sleep selected); or I guess you could rely upon a screen saver (again, make sure that lock on screen saver is selected).

Yes. Fucking Excel. Pivot tables. Data analysis. VBA. Reliable and fast ODBC. Access to SQL.

All this works on a Mac I know but fuck me if I don't just hate the way I have to think in that fucking system.

I never knew I could lock my workstation with Windows Key + L.

That's handy. I always did CTRL-ALT-DEL and just hit spacebar, since Lock Computer is always highlighted.

Yeah, I oscillate between windows key L and ctrl-alt-del and enter.

I really enjoy the physicality of swiping ctrl-alt-del then mashing enter. Makes things seem finalized.

No it isn't, because a lot of users have macs. That have problems and crash and need to fit into our domain structure.

So I need to make sure it works. And, unlike you, I don't have the liberty of telling them to fuck off and get a real man's computer.

Also, try using a windows print-server with a mac. Go on, have fun.

I use a Mac for IT work all the time. I'd never use Windows for IT, that's just asking for trouble. Windows is for playing games, UNIX has been powering the world for 30 years.

Since I can't actually try that, I'll take a blind stab at it.

There's a few bugs with Samba connections to DFS shares. You should see similar issues on any *nix based machine. I don't have a domain environment with DFS to connect to, so I can't see what happens, but I'm assuming if you dismount the DFS share before the computer falls asleep, there's no issue? I know there were connection problems in older versions of SMB on linux that were patched out that may not have been included yet in OS X's smb client, did you try installing the newest Samba and mounting the DFS shares that way?

I work in IT too 8-)
