Turns out that not only do the girls in my old high school now get to wear trousers (I had permanently red legs during winter) but they have replaced the ugly, static-y acrylic tops with comfy fleece-lined sweatshirts, have polo shirts instead of striped shirts, and the upper school now get to wear a black uniform instead of the old bottle green

I think you and Mori should have your kids dress in your old outfits on their first day of school, just so they can appreciate their freedom

I'm a super strong believer in school uniforms, tho

I just wish ours had been a little more comfy/warm

School uniforms seem to me to be a concept that is built on really poor rationale.

    School uniforms just support fetishism.

As someone who rarely had more than two sets of clothes growing up, and whose parents couldn't afford designer labels, I am bloody grateful for the existence of school uniforms. Plus they look pretty smart, and you don't have to agonise over what to wear in the mornings. Just pull on your uniforms and go. Plus it made mufti days fun.

I saw how much problems being able to choose your own tracksuit bottoms for PE caused. A lot.

    true story
my mother is Mexican, and her grandfather was a pastor before he retired
my mother's family was relatively wealthy, upper class by mexican standards, and her grandfather and grandmother lived in their guest house after he retired

most days of the week, he'd dress himself up in a suit and amble on down to the park across from the girl's school and just sit and wait for school to get out
then at dinner he'd rant to the family about how shamelessly girls dressed

my great grandfather was pretty awesome

I'm pretty sure I've seen studies which show schools with uniforms achieve higher standards and better behaviour and whatnot than those without, as well, for whatever reasons
