Xbox Live / Windows Live / WTF

So I'm trying to setup my existing xbox live account on my new xbox 360.
The problem is I don't remember the password for my windows live account and windows live says my e-mail address isn't a live account. The Indian tech support people (nothing against them) are telling me this e-mail address is correct, then they transfer me to someone else who said my email expired and I must make a new one.
I explained to him that it's not expired and I use it every day and he seemed to be stumped so now I'm on hold while he "researches" his "resources" for more information.
Anyone know how the hell this crap works?
Edit: Final verdict is that since I didn't log in within the last 3 months, my account is forever lost to me unless I log in with the xbox 360 that I no longer own and has probably been refurbished already. GG Microsoft.
