How do I play Pokémon?!

Alright enough of all that let me show you how to really play pokemon.

First you're going to need something with flame body, to make your eggs hatch faster.


Drop your pokeparents off here. Make sure they are awesome enough! Awesome parents beget awesome children.
Males pass down moves, females determine species and (when holding an everstone, 50% of the time) nature.


You'll be getting this a lot.
Now, let's ride around until they realize what a thin line there is between love and hate.

Some people like to nickname their hatchlings to keep track of them, but I don't.


Now we need to check to see if it's worth keeping. Lonely nature? This one obviously sucks.

This one is more like it! Modest nature, but impetuous and silly? Not good enough for me, but maybe if you're just starting out this would be an ok result. It all depends on how much breeding you can stand. Patience is rewarded, however!


Holy shit! This is so great and rare that I'm going to give it a nickname!


This way you can tell it apart from a hacked shiny. Yep, the only way to be sure.


Looks like this passes preliminary tests - "Somewhat vain" indicates that the highest stat is in special defense, and that the hidden "IV" ends in a 1 or 6. Since 31 is the highest value, this could be good news! We'll have to do an IV check to be absolutely sure.


To do an IV check, we'll need to view our stats as they would be at level 100, which can be accomplished in an online level 100 battle.


View the summary of the pokemon you want to check. Yep, those sure look like numbers, but what do they mean? We'll have to plug them in, along with the nature, into an IV calculator, available at an internet near you.


This is Serebii's calculator! Well, this looks like a pretty good pokemon. When you get a good pokemon like this, you can either keep it, or use it as a parent to try and breed something even better!

Well so that's all there is to pokemon breeding, now just go do that 5 more times and you're got yourself a team! Some people like to waste their time making really crappy pokemon, and some people like to waste their time making really good pokemon. The world of pokemon is one full of difficult choices.

NOW SOME GENERAL BATTLING RULES. WITH CAPS

- Pokémon battles through Wi-fi automatically level your Pokémon to either levels 50 or 100. So you don't have to train them to level 100 yourself, saving a lot of time.
-Sleep Clause: you may not put more than one of your opponent's Pokémon to sleep at a time.
-Species Clause: your team must be comprised of six different species of Pokémon.
-Suicide Clause: If both players are down to their last Pokémon, the player with the first Pokémon to hit 0 HP is the loser. In other words, using moves like Self Destruct and Explosion cause you to lose, even if it kills your opponent. However, using a move with a recoil that kill both you and your opponent is a win for you.
-No Legendary Pokémon whatsoever.
-No Wobbuffet. You may ask "Wynaut?", but you should already know.
-No Garchomp. You may ask "Wynaut?", and I really couldn't tell you.

And now, some useless knowledge!

- Pokémon is a made-up composite word.
- None of the Pokémons' names change in Spanish translations from either continent, yet, they change in France, Italy and some others. Oh yeah, Latin America hasn't got the Spain Spanish translation since the RBY days, by the way.
- Ledian is based on Pulseman, which is a character from another game made by Game Freak, but it was released on the Genesis/Mega Drive.
- Pulseman's nemesis was the Galaxy Gang. Sound familiar?
- If you evolve a Pokémon with a Japanese name on an American GBA cart, and that name was the default one, it will keep its name. But if you do that on DP, its name will be the evolution's. It won't change if it's an actual nickname, though.
- Infernape is based on Sun Wukong, a character from a very old Chinese Book called Journey to the West. Sun Wukong is pronounced Son Goku in Japanese, and he bore a staff while flying on a cloud.

And now, some slightly more useful knowledge.

- You can get new wallpapers for your boxes in Jubilife City's TV station. Details here.
- Pokémon Battle Revolution sucks, unless you can find it for cheap.
- Pokémon Ranch: Pokémon go in, what comes out? MOTHERFUCKERS!
- You can check an Eggs Nature before it hatches. Heres how.

This isn't a hack, it's more a glitch in the game. It's a very useful glitch.

First, save before you pick up an egg from the Day Care Center, then head to a PC. I use the one in the Day Care Center, 'cause it's right there.

Now, you need two empty boxes next to each other, so that you can switch quickly from one to the other with L and R*. Put your egg in the first position in one box, switch to the box next to it (via L or R), and place a hatched Pokémon in first position in this new box, so that it's in the same position as the egg.

*BlueNote: If your controls are set to L=A, then this won't work!

Next, use L or R to switch to the box with the Pokémon in it. Hover your cursor over said Pokémon, and you'll notice that a) the cursor will bounce, and b) a display at the bottom left will give you the Pokémon's item, then type, then nature, then ability, before cycling through to item again. Get a feel for the rhythm (it's about four and a half bounces of the cursor between changes, roughly), then switch from the box with the Pokémon in it to the box with the egg in it, just before the display changes from Type to Nature. If you've timed it right, you'll see the Nature of the Pokémon in the egg for a brief second before it clears. If you're too soon, you may see the egg's Type briefly instead. Practice makes perfect! You can do the same for Ability too, by timing it just as the display shifts from Nature to Ability on the Pokémon.

If the egg has the wrong nature or ability, simply soft-reset (L+R+Select+Start), talk to the Day Care guy, and tell him you don't want it. You have to say no to every option, or he gives it to you. Nature and Ability are set when the egg is laid, IVs are set when the egg is picked up. This is actually a notable difference. If you save, pick up an egg, and check nature/ability then hatch and check IVs, reload, and do the same, the nature/ability will be the same, but the IVs will be different.

I think I get the idea- you bring it in, get it to slap something, then switch it out before it gets squished? Nice, for the one time it might work- then you'll know it's coming.

EDIT: Or you read about it online and keep it in mind from then on. Might as well run Destiny Bond and kill the attacker outright if needed.

Yeah, I'm inclined to wonder why anyone would use an actual Rattata for FEAR. I personally would use Kangaskhan. Endeavor via Egg Move and Sucker Punch, plus you can throw in a couple of other good moves like Outrage if you think your opponent suspects something. The main problem would be the probability of it surviving with a bunch of HP, but considering how common Close Combat and other powerful Fighting moves I wouldn't be too worried. Plus Sucker Punch ought to be enough to finish off even a Poke that isn't quite at 1 HP yet.

Focus Sash keeps the weakling alive (it should be as slow as possible with low defenses) and then you use Endeavor on that turn to bring the opponent to 1 HP and Quick Attack the next turn for the kill. But then you have a totally useless Rattata or similar with 1 HP that could have been something that could take out the opponent's pokemon anyway.

Uh, Blue, even I could see that one coming from a mile away. You might see a Trapinch or three, but someone pulling out Rattata or Pidgey? Either that person has as much competitive experience as I do or they're hoping to play someone with as much experience as I have.

Otherwise it'll raise one hell of an "Uh-oh, sneaky shit comin'" flag in anyone else's mind. You might get a couple of wins over newbies with it, but that's it.

It nets you a kill but guarantees one for the opponent as well. Totally pointless. You might as well explode on them.

Speaking of Explosion, I want to make a Lickilicky for the sole purpose of having the most powerful attack in the game at my disposal: STAB and Choice Band Explosion.

Holy crap. I just ran a Lickilicky with max Attack, max attack boosts and a Choice Band using critical hit Explosion against a Happiny with minimum defense and max defense reduction through a damage calculator.

Over 1,000,000 damage.

I might go into breeding heavily- got a lot of untouched "caught-for-the-pokedex" guys in my games. I'm looting my R/S/E/FR games of any useful pokemon so I can see just what I have. LG is being used to pillage Colosseum and XD. When I can IV test them all (maybe 350-400 in all), then I'll know what I have.

But I've been meaning to IV check my shiny Shellos to see if it's any good.

Well I fear the Rattata.
I have a small handful of priority, one ghost, no rocks/spikes. I do have sandstorm, but maybe its not up yet? or maybe I didn't bring the Hippo.
and its not like Rattata has to be at 1HP to deal damage with Endeavor. Even at full health it only has maybe 100 HP? That definitely sucks for anyone that doesn't have recovery.
Anyway, its not going to devastate a team but it can deal an annoying amount of damage to most anything with little effort. How do you protect yourself from taking any damage? Switch to a ghost? Or have something with a priority attack already out and the Rat has to lose its sash to spikes or something.
I don't think thats difficult for the fear user to avoid.

Breeding and training is getting more and more tedious for me, but honestly the the thrill of battles is somewhat worth it. I'm only going to train about three more and then that's it for quite some time. Is there any info about whether or not breeding and EV training in Pt would go any faster/more efficient?

Mostly my fault, due to a mild cold and trying to figure out how to move a couple dozen boxes of random crap. But I'll be around, dang it!

Meantime I think I'll make a second Armor Wolf, with a different moveset. He's been doing so well in his matches, I believe adding an egg move or two could make even more of an improvement. I don't think I'll be allowed to use the second one in this tournament, but I'll keep him for other matches.

I was experimenting with Sandstorm, as you can see from my selection. Shivneas kinda NEEDS Rain Dance to function, so...

Also, my team selection is kinda crappy. I have... holes in there. Big holes. Some people exploit them and DESTROY ME (Zerokku), others don't, and we have pretty close matches (Reynolds, Jugs and Rockin.)

I still believe that if I'd kept my cool and used <Move I Didn't Use> on <My Pokémon> in the last round of that fight with Jugs instead of what I'd done, I had a chance of winning. Then again, I hadn't seen his last Pokémon at all, but I had the possiblity of finishing off what he had out and being on near-max health. But I didn't and I got kilt, so hey!

Nature is more important, although IVs are also crucual IMO. Also, nature is easier to breed for.

Nature is the most important, although some are interchangable like Relaxed/Sassy or Mild/Rash or Naive/Hasty. Then of importance are, depending on the role, speed and atk/spatk or HP and def/spdef.

Yeah, in order of importance I'd say nature and EV training are about even, with IVs being still useful but not as critical as the first two. As Chen said, in many cases there is more than one nature that can be useful for a given Pokemon.

Best is getting a couple good Dittos, a couple given male Pokemon with good speed IVs, and a lot of spare time. Then you too can waste much of your time biking up and down Solaceon town.. I mean, er, be a Pokemon breeder!

I'll be checking in a couple of times tonight, in case Munkus shows up. If our match is still on, that is.

I have no clue what kind of spread I gave my old Togekiss, so it's about time she gets fixed seeing as she has just reached level 99.

Emerald's seventh badge, after all that build up, turned out to be a total joke. My Gardevoir traced Claydol's levitate, imprisoned Psychic and Calm Mind, then Calm Minded up til it could one shot all four of the psychic duo's Pokemon. For whatever reason Claydol kept trying to Earthquake even though Gardevoir was levitating and the other Pokemon I had out for the rest of the fight was Swellow. In the end, I never needed to bring out Mightyena. What a waste of hauling that dog around.

Swalot and Lairon back on the team, and on I go!

Oh yeah, and some random breeding project or another. As always.
