Somebody asked me what I thought next generation meant and what about the PlayStation 3 was next generation. The only next gen system I've seen is the Wii – the PS3 and the Xbox 360 feel like better versions of the last, but pretty much the same game with incremental improvement. Bu tht eWii feels like a major jump – not that the graphics are more powerful, but that it hits a completely different demographic. In some sense I see the Wii as the most significant thing that's happened, at least on the console side, in quite a while.
So in a month we'll be coming up on the second anniversary of Nintendo's little white money printer. Remember when they first revealed the name and we were all like WTF? And then they revealed the remote and we were like WTF?
And then they launched the thing and it quickly blew past everyone else in sales while all the people that participated in the PS3 launch riots and subsequent failed eBay sales returned their console?
What's your favorite game? What games are you looking forward to? Discuss.
I personally feel that Nintendo is doing everything right this generation. They put out a great piece of hardware at a great price that strived to be different--and it's paying off. Nintendo could be the only developer for the thing and there'd still be enough software for it to be worth a purchase.
And I feel that by the end of the generation WiiWare & the Virtual Console will make up the best software lineup out of the three console's respective Downloadable Game Services.
I have all three current consoles, and unfortunately I'm least impressed with the WII. I'm no graphics whore, or computing whore...I just feel REALLY underwhelmed by the games selection. It's sad to say the game that gets the most play is the game that came free with it. I only bought WII PLay for the extra remote. Here are my thoughts on the games I've played / own:
Wii Sports - A++ Really shows the logic behind the design decisions of the system / remote
Mario Galaxy - A++ IMHO the same "wow" factor as mario64
RE4 - C Don't get me wrong here it's a great game, but definitely been there done that
Wii Play - D boring games
Mario Kart - C Boring, nothing new to me
Super Smash Bros - B cool concept but the terrible online situation just blows it for me
No more heros - A Great game just never finished it because of the stellar titles on the other two at the time
There's more but none come to mind. Overall, I enjoy it at parties and with my fiance, but it tends to gather dust.

I sure do love my little white box. It kind of defaults as my favorite console simply because it has Zelda, but it's definitely the console I play the most. My 360 has been broken for months, and I haven't felt motivated to get it fixed/replace it. My PS3 is at home (I'm at college), so I don't really play it for several weeks at a time.
But the Wii sits faithfully next to my the small TV I brought with and it helpful when I have an hour of so of free time. I just started replaying Metroid Prime 3 - that game is fantastic.
And once the next Zelda comes out, my life will essentially shut down for a week.
This game is all about the racism. I hate to think about all the backlash that will be involved but the truth must be told. The truth about a man who kills people by dropping them from his crane. Political correctness be damned. Damned to the max.

If I guessed that 10 people on this board played Shikigami 3, I'd probably be exaggerating. I'd wager only Radiant Dawn could come close in terms of difficulty(I'll get it if/when it price drops).
I was pretty let down by the Zelda on the Wii. That's just me though.
I've definitely found that assigning controls you need to use regularly to waggle is a bad idea. Save it for flourishes or rather special moves, like in No More Heroes.
I regret purchasing the wii, much like the gamecube. Its a great system, and has a lot of good games, just not a lot of good games that appeal to me =\

This is the reason I didn't really enjoy Zelda (on Wii) and Okami. It doesn't bother some people, but I'd like motion to be used somewhat sparingly.
Still, I was able to play the GC version of the same Zelda on the Wii.
Bought a Wii recently. I have two games for it. I figure if I buy one game a year for it, I'll be doing all right. Better than I did with the GameCube, anyway.
sold it for more than what is was worth and i'm not really regretting that decision. especially not this month
Well yeah.
But you wouldn't really regret selling anything for more than what it was worth.
I'm the biggest Nintendo fan around here and I'd sell my Wii if I could get more than what it is worth, including of course all of the Wii Shop stuff I have tied to it.
Because then I could just go back, rebuy everything, and then get some more on top of it.
In fact I did sell my first Wii with SMB and TP in January '07 for over $500.
Despite that I've been called insane for it, I bought the Wii for Castle Shikigami III.
It was worth it.
I also picked up No More Heroes and Trauma Center: New Blood with it, which were also enjoyable.
Since then I've gotten Mega Man 9, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, and Geometry Wars Galaxies.
It's a system that has great potential for quirky games down the line, since apparently anyone and everyone can release whatever they want on it with no drama whatsoever(take notes, Sony).
I think it's going to become the console for shmups, if Shikigami 3 and the forthcoming Ultimate Shooting Collection(Radio Allergy/Chaos Field/Karous) is any indication.
I'm also looking forward to Fatal Frame 4, Madworld, and No More Heroes 2(of course).
The TG16 selection alone on the VC has more Shmups than the 360 and PS3 combined I think.
The WII does have some FUN games, but none of the games engrossed me as much as a Bioshock or a GTAIV or currently a Fable. I enjoyed the hell out of Zack & Wiki, and had some old school thoughts when playing SMG, but other than that I felt really just underwhelmed.
And I have no idea about the cables. Which ever the ones are that makes the jaggies look like crispy sharp jaggies.
This game is all about the racism. I hate to think about all the backlash that will be involved but the truth must be told. The truth about a man who kills people by dropping them from his crane. Political correctness be damned. Damned to the max.
The Wii, to me, occupies the same space that my 'Cube did (big surprise).
The console I play every now and again, and every few months a game will come out for it that I really want. But mostly it sits.
But the few games I do play on it always seem to be so awesomely fun. It's basically all about quality vs. quantity...though this generation, they've certainly bumped up the quantity of crap shovelware. But I'm talking about games I actually pick up.
Last generation, I owned all three consoles. I picked up more titles for the Xbox than the Cube, and about the same on the PS2 as the Cube, but nearly all of them wound up getting sold eventually. My Cube games? I kept nearly all of them, and several of them I still get out occasionally.
The Wii is especially convenient for me, because honestly I don't have huge amounts of time for console gaming anymore so I seem largely able to fill that time with fantastic Wii titles. Whereas five, six years ago I had to drop down into the "hit and miss" realm on the Xbox/PS2 to fill my gaming time.
Overall I'm not sad in the slightest that I bought my Wii. I've had it since release, and I'd say that since that time there have been two periods of three to six months apiece where I didn't even touch it. But then I power it up, play the latest must-have title or grab a VC game, and I'm remarkably happy with my purchase again.
The Wii is still to me what I though it would be from the start: a good second console, or console to augment PC gaming, or console for somebody who doesn't have a lot of gaming time.
Despite that I've been called insane for it, I bought the Wii for Castle Shikigami III.

Well, considering the 360 and the PS3 have none, that isn't too difficult.
Though that's a completely different story in Japan. Their 360 has Shikigami 3, a Raiden game, etc.
And the odds of SCEA letting a company release a shmup on their system are somewhere between zero and nil.
It makes me sad that so many people blindly ditched the Xbox when the 360 came out, then complain that a certain Xbox game doesn't work on the 360.
That's 'cause the Xbox is HUUUUUUUUGE!
Normally this is a stupid complaint, but when it comes to old systems and whether or not you keep them, it becomes a valid one. I don't have that much room everywhere. My PS3 is hooked up to my HDTV in the bedroom, while the Wii sits in the living room on an SDTV. It's a situation that works. When I had them both on my HD, I was neglecting the Wii.
For example, no one should be keeping a PS1 if they have a PS2, for anything other than being a collector. Something new comes out, an upgrade, you tend to get rid of the old one.
And my main problem with Xbox 360's style of emulation is that they'll say a game is "compatible", but what that apparently means is "it boots up." Some games have major fucking problems playing on 360. Don't dick me around, Microsoft. If KOTOR and Panzer Dragoon run like absolute shit, don't put it on the list and I won't waste money on two classic games that barely run on your system.

JSRF and Orta alone ensure I'm never getting rid of my Xbox.

The other cool thing about the Wii is that I get to enjoy all the previous Cube games I missed. I more or less bowed out of last generation after the Dreamcast (with exception to the GBA) out of frustration with it's quick death, school, pc gaming, and wanting to get as much out of the DC as possible.
So yeah, never owned a PS2, Cube, or Xbox. Now I get to go back and play the great games I missed like Beyond Good & Evil and Super Mario Sunshine.

Pretty much. Also the cock tease of stripping BC from the PS3 might be the bigger "crime" in gamer's eyes, especially since there are so many more titles availible for the PS2 then there ever was for the OXBOX.
Still I barely ever use the GCN feature on the Wii anymore since I can just play Wii games on it. Wii is a serious gamers console. Sure it might be fun to borrow a 360 or PS3 every once and awhile and go through the exclusive shooter/B rate RPG/bloodfest of the month (or year in the case of the PS3) for a little while and then pack it away. Games with real soul though are only found on the Wii.

You could make that argument with 360 because a lot of their library runs in 720p.
Ever try playing a PS2 on an HDTV? It looks like pure ass. If they were running through the PS3, the PS3 could upscale and make them look decent like it does with PS1 games.
I hear tales of a lot of PS2 games looking damned amazing with upscaling (SOTC in particular), but I'd like to think those are just lies they're feeding me to rub it in my face that I have a 40GB.
The other cool thing about the Wii is that I get to enjoy all the previous Cube games I missed. I have, and it looks quite good. But then again, my HD-TV has pretty good internal upscaler.
I guess mine just sucks then, I have a Vizio 720p.
But God, I tried playing Incredible Hulk: UD on it and it was like my TV was screaming at me through fuzziness, yelling "What the fuck are you thinking?!"
I have a Wii. I play the Wii sometimes. I like the Wii. It has some games that are pretty rad to play and probably some games in the future that looks like they may be rad to play also (except not from Nintendo, cause they're a bunch of casual-cock-sucking whores, deth 2 wiimusic).
The other cool thing about the Wii is that I get to enjoy all the previous Cube games I missed. Pick up Wind Waker. Easily my favorite Zelda.
Already have it.
You know there's actually a bit of irony there. Back in '05 when I used to work at CompUSA I would participate in Nintendo's Cyberscholar program, basically online training for retail salespersons. Turns out I won a monthly sweepstakes and they sent me a 1019 memory card and Wind Waker. But I didn't have a cube.
I didn't end up actually playing it until about two years later.
I picked up one of these, but it's really only my family that's gotten much out of this system. The only game I've played where the Wii controls actually mattered was Metroid Prime 3; pretty much everything else I've played could've just as easily been done on a conventional controller (and with less hassle). Their attempt at striving to be different basically just ignored people who have been playing their stuff for years and basically make games so easy that anyone can play. It's not a bad idea in terms of marketing or even in terms of getting more people to play games, but I can't help but feel like I wasted money. Great party console, but for single-player stuff it's a wasteland.
I was not impressed by SMG very much. I liked the visual style, but gameplay-wise it was just a snorefest. Yeah, I know it's not meant to be a "hardcore" game, but a little challenge would've been nice. Playing all over again with Luigi was laughably easier. On the upside, my 7 year-old sister plays it a bunch and does well at it, so that should give you an idea of where the difficulty is pegged at.
The VC is nice except for the fact that all those games have been available via other methods for years. The fact that Nintendo took this long to make them available again is criminal. On the upside, they present the VC stuff for a reasonable price and it does bring back memories. The full BC for Gamecube games is also a big plus.
Two years into the Wii's life, I feel like I've outgrown almost everything it has to offer. Not in the sense of being older, but in the sense of simply having played enough games to want more than a choice between playing old games or playing completely conventional games with a uselessly new controller. I also realize that I'm not the target demographic for Nintendo, but to just be ignored completely is rather aggravating. Fortunately, there is a wealth of great games these days on other systems, so instead of feeling left out because I don't "get" the Wii I can simply let people enjoy their system instead of feeling bitter about it. Between PC and 360 games, I have more to play than I can handle already, so no big deal. Maybe the next time Nintendo makes a console, they'll remember that they can make games that both old-school players and new folks can enjoy. No gimmicky controls required.
And for the people who get irritated by the BC on the 360, you're putting the blame in the wrong place. Microsoft didn't own the rights to everything that went into the OXbox, so putting full BC in the 360 would've meant paying off the companies that did own those rights. Those companies wanted too much money for the hardware (who wouldn't be tempted to rip off Microsoft?), so Microsoft told them to shove it and tried something else. Nintendo, being a veteran of consoles, knew well enough to own all those rights and so was able to basically include the GC hardware in the Wii (much like a PS2 has a chip or something that has what you need to play PS1 games).

Also, with Monster Hunter 3 and The Conduit coming, it seems like a lot of third-party developers are starting to get how to make Wii games look great.

Otherwise known as the best system ever made by human hands. Think about it. Take everything about the Gamecube and double it.
Well, except total lifetime sales of course. That figure will probably be more than five times the total LTD of the Gamecube.
Best games of any current home console too.

Take notes next time, Sony and Microsoft. The PS4 and Xbox 720 better let me play ALL PS1, 2, 3, OXbox and 360 games.
This goes for Nintendo as well, though, if it still has motion control. If not, it better at least play GC discs.

(I <3 my 20" Apex, and I'll keep it until it dies)
Considering I have a Sega CD and a Saturn hooked up at all times, upgrading might be a bad idea.
Welcome to the world on this side.
it gets along nicely with the dust bunnies
Already have it.
You know there's actually a bit of irony there. Back in '05 when I used to work at CompUSA I would participate in Nintendo's Cyberscholar program, basically online training for retail salespersons. Turns out I won a monthly sweepstakes and they sent me a 1019 memory card and Wind Waker. But I didn't have a cube.
I didn't end up actually playing it until about two years later.
Yeah, upscaler sucks in majority of HD-TVs, and it is pretty hard to know which ones have good upscaler without extensive research.
Especially of the light-gun type. This is exactly what I've hoped for ever since I've heard of the Wii.
