Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
I know there's a lot of Asimov fans here, so let's talk about him.
So I just started reading my first Asimov book today. I'm reading Nemesis, and so far, I'm really, really enjoying it. I can't understand why a lot of people hate on this book.
I can't believe it's taken this long for me to get into Asimov. I plan to read the Foundation series and The Robot series and The Gods Themselves, asap.
I'm also trying to find a copy of I, Robot that doesn't have that black guy on the cover. Movie editions of novels piss me off.
The Last Question is the only Asimov I've ever read. It was worthwhile.
I don't get why people hate movie editions so much. The book itself is the same. The closest thing I've heard to an explanation is that it might make some people who see you reading it think that you're only reading it because you heard about the movie, and that's just silly.
I love how the book 'I, Robot' just has a giant picture of will smith on the front, despite the fact that the movie is different from the book, and smiths character was never in the book to begin with.

because i buy books to collect them, and it's one thing if it has some tiny text saying "now a major motion picture" or something, but another if it looks like this

Perhaps you don't understand just how badly Will Smith ruins everything.
I've been trying to reach you, but your extension cord doesn't reach that far.

I'm actually a fan of will smith, I like the cut of his jib.
But yeah the movie version of I, Robot was pretty much terrible.

Why do you buy paperbacks for a collection?
Paperbacks are for tossing in a bag, reading a couple times, then throwing away because it fell apart already.
If you want to collect, I'd stick to sewn hardbound. Even the cheapest will be more durable and more attractive than the best paperback. The only real problem is when they try to gilt the pages but are too cheap to do it properly and it winds up with this gunky grainy crap all over the edges, like the HHGG omnibus. I prefer plain-edged pages anyway. Harper-Collins does a rough-cut edge on some of theirs that I really like. It's very attractive laid open, and the pages separate more easily with dry fingertips, with can be a problem for me in the winter.

Oh I'm with you, but I don't judge actors based on what movies they are in. I base it off of how much I like their acting.

Oh christ, talk about movies that completely missed the point of the novels on which they were based on.
I hate the I Am Legend movie with all my being.

Pfft if anything everyone around Will Smith ruined those movies.
I love me some asimov. I recently finished reading most of the foundation books written by him (ordered foundation and earth, should get here soon, can't wait), and the Robot novels, with the detective and olivaw. I'm hoping to start on the empire and other robot books soon.
Anyone want to recommend books he wrote that are not part of the foundation/robot/empire series'?

That's why I don't collect books. It's expensive. I have a few nice ones, pretty much all gifts, but mostly cheap paperbacks. They're readable, but not collectible.
It really bugs me when they try to make a high-end paperback. They almost always stop printing the regular paperback, and they're more expensive but not really any better. I don't care what kind of paper you use if the cover's going to fall apart.
you and i have different definitions of collecting. my definition only expands as far as actually owning the book, in whatever physical form.
Movie editions are a physical form, but you'll own a hardback a lot longer.
man go read what i wrote again
i don't mind it being a movie edition, i mind when it's a photo of the fucking actor on the cover. and i just fucking said, i can't afford hardcovers for all my books.

If you're going to go cheap, you can't afford to be picky.
If you're going to be picky, you may as well make it worth it.
If you want something just to read and have, and price is your main concern, you can't really complain about the cover. Sometimes they put really stupid covers on books. A picture of an actor isn't bad at all compared to some of the stuff they do.
It's getting to the point now where hardbacks are barely more expensive than paperback. There have been several times where they've actually been cheaper- never with good hardbacks, but still thick board and a cloth binding.

I think you can buy the first 3 Foundation books in one single book.
