Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
So after my laptop's HD has crapped out on me the third time this year I'm getting sick of all the transferring files and DVD burns and I want to get an external HD to keep a constant backup.
But what I want is something that can be networked; ideally just plugged right into the router (if that's even feasable) so that all my pc's can access it at any time.
Is such a thing possible? Or does it need to go through a PC?
They are several manufacturers that make exactly what you are talking about. Western digital and buffalo are the two I can think at the momment. I have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822165026 and enjoy it. Not only is it LAN but you can setup folders to work WAN with no software needed on the computers accessing them because it is web based. Plus my xbox and ps3 can stream from it. As far as data protection it can be confiqured with RAID 0 or 1 with two SATA HD, plus this one can also have a third hard drive connected via USB.It comes with backup software that you tell it what folders you want it to backup. I would look around as the prices flucuat often. I got mine for like $160 from jr.com last summer.
Just to throw out a slightly different suggestion, I kept being turned off by the network solution in case I wanted new, different, more HD storage. I opted for the Belkin Network USB Hub. It's not quite as fancy as to raid features, or even being able to deliver concurrent access, but it's certainly expandable and works with ANY External USB hard disk.
