I think Japanese game designers tend to stick to trope and convention and onerous storytelling in lieu of modernity sometimes.

Also, the Japanese think all western video games are filled with old guys in power suits (Gears, Half Life, Halo, even Fallout 3 to some extent)

Final Fantasy blows balloons. I died twice ten minutes in to Final Fantasy 4 on the DS before saving and have to go through the stupid cut scenes again which I can't bothered to do.

My initial reaction is strongly pro-American video games, solely on the strength of Baldur's Gate and Fallout.

The second time I was turned to stone and didn't realise that that killed you. My character was still standing up! I didn't even know that he had been turned to stone in the first place!!

The thing that you also have to remember about Japanese games is that for the most part, we only get the ultra-big-budget, incredibly mainstream Japanese games. It's sort of like judging all American cinema based only on Hollywood blockbusters and shitty parody movies.

Of course, there's also lots of smaller Japanese games that wouldn't do well here just because American and Japanese taste are so incredibly different, even before taking actual quality into account.

Can I just say that I've been doing the whole =/= representing "does not equal" for a while around work and with friends and always get "WTF is that?". Thank you good sir for perpuating this as mainstream.
