If more Opera was like what I saw in Fifth Element...I would be a fan forever.

I think more people need to be exposed to modern Opera, and then more people would watch it.

The giant climactic part of Le Grande Macabre by Ligeti, for instance, involves the Kind of death thinking that he is drinking the blood of his enemies when in fact he is drinking wine, and then he realizes he was supposed to bring the apocalypse, but he's so drunk he forgot. So instead of riding on a steed with a trumpet and a herald he gets on a toy rocking horse and tries to announce the end of the world but passes out halfway through.

Also at the beginning of the show a lesbian couple decides to go into a tomb to get away from other people making noise and at the end of the show they emerge and sing the aria "That was good"

You don't see that sort of awesome in Monteverdi.

Thank you SO MUCH for linking that. I've been wanting to see/hear Dr Atomic ever since I heard part of it on the classical station. Why hasn't he fucking recorded it already?

Oh hey, they did release it on DVD 2 months ago, if only I had known! Oh well, it will still be cool. Movie theater screens are better and louder!

Let it be known that Dr Atomic was amazing, even though the second act was really boring at times because of that fucking random Indian maid.

Has anyone seen the Met and original version? The Met one is coming out on DVD sometime soon, I assume, but the original is on Youtube and I really don't like the staging with all the dancing choreography. But I'm not really into opera so I guess my opinion is uninformed.

A night at the opera can be pretty good, but I think I'd rather spend a day at the races.

Aw Horsefeathers, The Geek. With an additude like that you might as well Go West order Room Service and spend all day eating Duck Soup with Animal Crackers.
