Sheets 2: The Funkening

So, gross. I love my fiance dearly and all, but.. ewwww.
He washed our sheets two weeks or so ago, right? So I was all 'yay he did the laundry' and everything was awesome.
Fast forward to today, when all my clothes are dirty and it's time to do a load of whites. I open up the washing machine, and I'm hit with a smell. See, it turns out that he forgot to put the sheets in the dryer, so they've been in there, mouldering away for two weeks.
And that is the story of the little chat that he and I are going to have when he gets home about remembering to put the stuff he washes in the dryer.
I've run these sheets through the machine again twice with some detergent and copious amounts of bleach. Fortunately they were white to begin with, although this morning when I found them they were orange. After the two runs, they seem to be back to white.
I plan to run them through the dryer at full heat and then wash them again another couple times, but I guess my question is, am I in denial? Are these sheets salvageable? My feeling is that enough bleach can probably kill just about anything, but is there something else I could be doing?
ceres on

Oh yes, mildew, my wife has yelled at me many times because of this. If there are no stains left and the smell is good then you are in the clear. Just be careful of how much bleach you are putting in there because it will cause your fabric to deteriorate. Also, mildew stains that is why your stuff was orange (I think anyway)...

Either that, or you've been sleeping with an Oompa Loompa in hiding.
Anyway, if you're deadset to keep the sheets, then if they smell clean and look clean, then I'd say they are clean. There is something to keep in mind though - it doesn't take all that long to get mildew on fabrics/clothes/sheets if they've been sitting in a lump (like in a washer) and soaking wet, and mildew can affect your health. I would say that they're just sheets - you can get a good set of them for not a lot.

They're in the dryer now, and when they're done I'll probably do the bleach thing once more, then dry again, and see how things look. An extra consideration for me is that I have very touchy, sensitive skin, and while any leftover mildew will definitely irritate it, the bleach probably will as well.
We're on a budget at the moment so I'd really rather not have to buy new sheets, is all. They aren't really special or even particularly good quality, I just really would rather avoid having to buy a new set. Two months ago I would have thrown them away and gotten new ones.

I'll assume you have another set of sheets that you've been using for the past couple weeks, so push comes to shove, you can use that same set for quite a while. It'd only take a couple hours to get them off, wash them, and get them back on.
If regular, if you're still worried, soak them in hot-warm water with some bleach and vinegar for a couple of hours. That should kill anything thats still on them. Then just wash them out.
I think that the internet has been for years on the path to creating what is essentially an electronic Necronomicon: A collection of blasphemous unrealities so perverse that to even glimpse at its contents, if but for a moment, is to irrevocably forfeit a portion of your sanity.
For future reference, you can get new sheets for probably $20. Decent ones, at Target. The amount you spent on electricity running the washer & dryer is probably equivalent.
Make sure you rinse all the bleach out and then dry the sheets on the hottest setting. Personally, I'd air them out really thoroughly afterwards, preferably somewhere sunny and dry.
The fabric's probably going to be pretty weak after all that bleaching, but you may still get some use out of them. If you start noticing skin irritation, though, I'd junk them as unfixable.

Thanks guys. They're on their last washing bleaching. I'm going to run them through once more with water only to make sure the bleach is good and gone, and then dry them again. If it doesn't work out then it doesn't. I thought about the electricity...
We do have sheets that are on the bed currently, so we might just have to use those for a while. So while the fail (and smell) was somewhat epic, at least we aren't stuck sleeping on the mattress pad till we buy a new set.

Someone told me that two washes, one dry, then repeat works perfectly to fix this. <.<
