So whenever I open the "my pictures" folder, in ANY program, to open or save a file, it crashes whatever app i'm using to open it. I can't save stuff in paint, cause it defaults to that directory, i can't access half of my pictures either. Any help would be appreciated

Are you using thumbnail view as default view?

could be a lot of things, but my best guess is that the thumbs.db file in that directory is corrupt. Try booting into safe mode (or Knoppix ) and deleting the file.

It's a hidden file that's placed in each folder that contains pictures. need to turn on "view hidden files and folders" in explorer.

Yeah, that would have been a good thing for me to mention.

pretty sure you could just delete it through command prompt....

    delete C:\mydocuments blahblah\my pictures\thumbs.db
