so hey faggots there's this website called www.galaxyzoo.org

it lets normal people identify photos of galaxies as either spiral or elliptical and which direction they are spinning!

apparently computers are bad at it!

so if you've always wanted to pretend to be an astronomer here is your one and only chance

now this article talks about one model of super massive black hole formation being accretion of matter

i was under the impression that black holes had a limited lifespan due to hawking radiation

i guess super massive black holes are in conditions that they can accrue matter fast enough to counteract this??

    anyone know

Space is full of gas and dust, but it is still awesome as fuck.

Edit: Also, I saw the Orion nebula tonight: One guy's telescope only picked up 3 stars near it, while another guy's bigger and better scope actually picked up the gassy stuff. Pretty neat.

dark matter is some crazy shit bros

either everything we thought we knew about gravity is wrong or 20% of the energy density in the universe is composed of exotic particles we've never observed that interact with normal matter only through gravity

the only way we can tell it's there is that it bends light like a galaxy or other massive object except there's nothing there

and apparently there's dark ENERGY too

i don't understand what it is at all

i just know that it is the reason the universe is expanding at an accelerated rate when we thought it should be hells of slowing down

    Telescopes are so cool.

(p.s. gravity doesn't exist. There is only Jesus's love preventing us from flying off into the void.)
(p.p.s that looked like a joke, but what you don't know, is someone actually said that and meant it. I was there)

you know something else that's fucking crazy

the universe at one time actually expanded faster than the speed of light

the universe is only like 15 billion years old but it is around 50 billion light years across whereas if the matter from the big bang moved at the speed of light constantly it should be like 30

all galaxies are moving farther away from each other

the way i picture it is that the universe is a grid that the squares on are getting bigger

what was that mind-blowing thing with protons(?) where if you send them through something specific they didn't do something, but then we you actually sat and looked at them while they were going through they did do something?

that's such an awful description but i cannot for the life of me remember what the whole thing was. it was pretty insane and basically turned everything you thought you knew on its head.

And then you compare the Big Dog to a galaxy and then you compare the galaxy to a galactic cluster and then you fucking die in a total perspective vortex

Also, scientists, what's the delay on big carbon nanotubes, huh? The future's never going to come at this rate.

It was electrons, but it applies to all particles to some extent.

    Simplified explanation

The youtube comments on double slit experiments are especially hilarious and stupid.

    longer explanation
(10 minutes of a lecture, dude giving it is from fermilab or something)

They did an experiment recently proving that buckyballs (molecules of 60 carbons in a soccer ball shape) do the same thing to a lesser extent at very low temperatures.

Shit like this makes me want to go into either quantum mechanics or astronomy, which is kind of funny considering that quantum mechanics is incredibly tiny shit and astronomy is incredibly huge shit.
