I am loving the shit out of this game. Haven't touched multiplayer yet, though. A few spoilery thoughts:
Jesus does Eddie take a lot of shit, even early on in the game, where I currently am, and I only expect it gets worse as Lars gets more of an army and becomes more of a hero. When Ophelia woke up and went gooey-eyed at Lars when I-controlling-Eddie had been the one being retarded and not figuring out how to kill the Spider Queen until the game told me how, it was pretty hurtful.
I guess I'm so used to playing as the "SUPER AWESOME HERO EVERYONE LOVES!" I expect my characters to be fully appreciated for what I make them do. But that's not Eddie's style.
Playing it on Brutal, doing all the sidequests, and leaving no stone unturned. I am about to murder the shit out of Lionwhyte at his stupid awesome base. The cameos thus far have been wonderful. The animals are fuckawesome.
Love it so far. I'm a little disappointed, but I did that to myself by hyping too much and the game is still plenty good in it's own right.
I know that some of the reviewers have been ragging on some of the secondary characters and how they're forgettable, but for my part...
I was when I failed the first tour bus escort mission. It actually got to the point where I wanted to finish it just so I didn't have to hear the audio on the fail cinematic again.

Magnus starts screaming about how there's fire everywhere. Eddie holds up the radio to his ear and opens his mouth like he's about to say something but just looks down and shakes his head. The BRUTAL DEFEAT took me out of it a little bit, but yeah...not awesome.
Man, with some of the negativity surrounding this game, I thought I might be a little disappointed... so far, not at all. I'm having a blast just fucking cruising around exploring while rocking out to the sound track. There's so much to see, I don't know when I'll actually get around to doing the main story.
I love adventure games and this game appeals to me in every way. The world itself looks so fucking awesome that I can't get enough of it. There are actually rivers of liquid metal. Doesn't get much more metal than that.
I've got $15 video game credit from Amazon for pre-ordering ODST.
If I sign up for their credit card, that is $30 off. $11.99 shipped for Brutal Legend.
Now I just need to figure out if there is some catch to this card, other than charging me interest.
Provided they haven't changed their credit card in the last few years, there's no real catch. I've been using Amazon's Visa for several years, just because I like getting the $25 Amazon reward certificates.

Looking into it more, it seems nice. Plus the whole lack of annual fee is nice. I don't have bad credit per say, I just don't have much credit, considering I've stayed away from credit cards and my spending motto has been to only buy what I can afford, and never charge. Now that I've been looking into buying a house lately, I realize the folly in my plan. Then again the whole credit system is pretty fucked in general, holy shit am I A.D.D.ing.
Anyways, I mights gets the metals, guys!
edit: Although I just did the math, and it looks like you'd need to spend $833.33 on Amazon to get a $25 gift card. Unless there is something I'm missing, damn you spend a lot of money on Amazon.

so I just popped in to say that this game is the motherfucking bee's knees and destructoid is trolling because he probably got beat up by Tim Schafer as a child or something.
Man I don't know what to think of Giant Bomb anymore.... They reviewed Brutal Legend as 3/5 stars. The same score they gave the latest SAW game. Same reviewer.
=/
Although, he did mention something in his review that worried me. 4 hour plot? I think I've spent around 2.5-3 hours so far, and I'm only like 25% done according to the menu screen. I'm guessing this isn't just plot?
Up to the Dry Ice mines now and so far I'm loving this game. That section right after the big stage fight with Lionwhyte was great. The urgency and "oh shit" factor was cranked up to eleven.

I can understand some reviewers not getting into this game. The melee combat is pretty second-rate, some of the missions, both for the main story and side missions, are just bullshit (when will devs learn that 99% of escort missions are not fun), and the RTS elements are pretty bare. The controls aren't the greatest either; requiring the player to target opponents to use certain abilities such as dodging or some of the powers makes those abilities virtually useless. Most of the combat boils down to spamming the earthshaker and picking off the enemies on the ground so they can't surround you and pummel you to death.
The humor and the story are the best parts, but unfortunately that means having to deal with very not-fun things like failing an escort mission because you decide to personally do some fighting for two seconds. Some day, devs will figure out that chaining a player to a retarded NPC for escort missions is just a bad idea if you have to keep the NPC alive.
Personally, I'm loving the game. Objectively, it has some very obvious shortcomings. That being said, at one point I was driving around the Metal Lands (I have no idea what the continent is actually called), looked up in the sky, and saw a planet in the sky shooting off electricity. And I've already played for 3-4 hours and only beaten something like 5-6 story missions, so I don't know what the hell reviewers are talking about with saying the game is so short.
And regarding Lionwhyte
I busted out laughing when I saw not only his huge, huge hair and fancy minions, but also witnessed that his giant hair enabled him to fly.
So has anyone just spent some time exploring the landscape to see how big it is?
Is it fucking metal?
Like I said, planet in the sky shooting electricity. Fire shoots down from the sky. There are pointy antelope, metal porcupines, and big bison/bear things with metal parts. Relics to raise, dragon statues to free, songs to unlock.
Things are pretty metal.
As far as map size, I drove around in one area, checked the map, saw I'd explored the whole continent, and then was rather disappointed. That is, until I checked again later, zoomed out, panned over, and realized that I'd only covered something like a quarter of the map. So it's a pretty good-sized map.
I'm confused as to why some of you care about what these yahoos on whatever clown review sites score this game.
I thought that was a phase people grew out of? Review scores stop mattering whenever you get out of high school and into the real world, where you're allowed to make your own opinions for a change.

Actually review scores matter least in high school. Once you get out into the real world and have to learn how to allocate your money more effectively, reviews become much more important.
And the importance of reviews to developers and publishers cannot be understated.
That said, from what I've been hearing from everyone, the 3/5 Giant Bomb review seems right on the money. Doesn't mean he hates the game, guys; they have a five-star rating scale, with no half-stars. Obviously just doesn't think it's good enough to be a four-star game. And hell, when you're recommending a game to people based on the personality of the game rather than the gameplay, 3/5 seems more than fair.
Here's what 4 and 3 star reviews mean on Giant Bomb, by the way:
4 Stars - Still very good and easy to recommend, though it doesn't quite live up to its full potential.
3 Stars - The halfway point. An inherent appreciation of this game's specific gameplay style, characters, subject matter, and so on may play as big a role in your enjoyment as the actual quality of the game.

Because nobody wants to see this game, or Tim Schafer, fade away because some bitch was like "lol RTS" or "lol short campaign" or "lol slasher"
By side-quests do you mean something like playing your guitar at inanimate objects or do you mean achieving objectives through actual gameplay and story?
I think he means an intricate and time consuming process of breeding and racing Demon Chickens until you finally breed a Flaming Demon Chicken, which you can then ride over water to a secret island with an insane optional boss fight with a 3 minute timer. If you defeat this boss, you'll be awarded a face-melting guitar solo that takes 20 minutes to play, but deals max damage to any attacking armies within range 99 consecutive times.
Knights of the Nine.. you useless bastard of a summon spell.

Yes, I prefer me some fun sidequests that are fun. Besides, these side quests also have some hilarious side story to them.
Hey, cantido, I know you were pretty into multi, so could you tell us how it is?
edit: holding 83/84 on metacritic right now. Not bad.
I sent the new OP through a PM, check there for the tutorial video. At page 100 I'll make a new thread with further details. I can't fit all the text right now.
I tried to jump straight into multiplayer. First off it's awesome, but first off, it spoils the story, second, you'll be running around like a headless chicken.
Every unit, and command button has a story behind it that you miss in the Campaign. The story missions really teach you how to play. (The Razor Girls probably have my favorite story.)
It's an Action RTS. Not like Overlord, not like Pikmin, not like Kingdom Under Fire. You do not walk around with a cluster of goons attached to you that you can swivel with the analog stick. You make a base, you gather resources, you make units and upgrades. You delegate offense and defense and can even micromanage if you really want. BUT! you fight along side your units too, and as you're playing as a hero/villian, you're character is the strongest of them all and can turn the tide of any battle.
It's not just that your character is strong, but the Y button is called Double Team, which gives you a special ability that literally makes the unit you use more powerful.
For me, this genre is rare. The only Action/RTSs that I know are like this are:
Battlezone1 and 2, Sacrifice, Warcraft 3: Defense of the Ancients mod (according to someone else) Guilty Gear 2 (but it sucked.)
My favorite is Battlezone and that is what I compare it too. The difference is that Brutal Legend has little to no structure development. It's ALL about the units. Also, like Battlezone, you can make vehicles that you can ride around in. If it blows up, you can just command another to be built. But BL goes the extra mile and if you hop out of those vehicles and the AI will take over (vehicles that are units have characters inside them.) In BZ, if your vehicle blew up, you'd have to build another, then command "Pick Me Up," then the pilot brings it to you, jumps out and walks home. Only Eddie can use The Deuce though.
Allegedly 64 km^2. Basically, it will take a few minutes to get from the northern extreme to the southern. Not sure if it is eight minutes of time, though.
Two islands? Interesting.
Anyone get ripped off by Gamestop on their damned preorder bonus? They ran out and I got gypped.

The EB where I preordered didn't even receive their bonuses. Seriously, wtf. Why wouldn't they just package them in the box like they did with Batman? I have a feeling that by the time they actually get the preorder bonus codes in, I'll have beaten the game.

Most reviewers are saying 8 hours at worst.
Either a misunderstanding or he's trolling.

I think Schafer said the Brutal Legend world is about sixty-four square kilometers.
I don't own a console atm. I'm dying on the inside.
...and the outside.
I can't really relate that game-wise though.
Thanks ninja. I love big worlds.
