They didn't deprive the kid of his birthday cake. They were willing to sell them the cake, and leave enough blank space on it for the family to write whatever the fuck they wanted on it.
They refused to write "Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler" on the cake, that's all. That's not depriving the kid of cake, only of seeing his name written in frosting on top of a cake.

I totally interpreted that sentence backwards as the shop refusing to give them a blank cake.
The shop should have just done it. The best thing to do in that kind of situation is to not get upset over the stupid, intentionally inflammatory thing.

Some people write deep/funny/motivational quotes at the beginning of each chapter of their thesis. I considered doing that for a while (opted against it because my prof/department wasn't big on sense of humour). I gave serious consideration to using "Mission Accomplished - George W. Bush" as the quote for the introduction chapter.
