What is your opinion of pornography?

I'd be interested in knowing where everyone stands on the subject of pornography. It would seem that if and whenever someone makes a post on say, reddit or digg, about how pornography is 'bad', it isn't long before other individuals with opposing viewpoints decide to chime in with pure, unabated rage about said individual's supposed conservatism or 'backwards' mentality regarding pornography and argue that it is the choice of the woman (it is, usually unless they were forced into it by pimps, bad boyfriends or come from a third world country), and how it's empowering to some. Could it be regarded as art, as some argue? Granted, the person who originally makes the anti-porn stance could well be a feminist, but is painted in the same light as George W. Bush and his 'War on Porn' back in 2005.

I'd be curious as to where people stand on the issue because I myself have not decided if pornography is a 'bad thing' or a 'good thing' and I'd like to hear some opinions on the matter before I make up my own mind on the subject.

    It's both.

More acceptance and better regulation of the industry and sex workers in general would help to eliminate a lot of the problems.

I think porn is not inherently bad or anti-feminist. Most of the porn on the market (DVDs for sale at a Hustler store) are bad and probably anti-feminist. I frankly don't see the appeal of people engaging in a poorly faked sex act complete with loud moans that seem to come from nowhere.

Pornography is a lot like the entertainment industry, because it is entertaining in nature. It's basically actors, or in some cases real people, entertaining the idea of sex for others to enjoy. That's their profession, which I'd say takes skill to do well. If you fire off early, laugh during sex, or just plain can't attract any viewers, then obviously you won't succeed in the industry. It's a business, not necessarily wrong in any sense, much like the movie industry or any other.

So goes Carlin and prostitution: "Selling is legal. Fucking is legal. Why isn't selling fucking, legal?" Pornography is ultimately a kind of prostitution I suppose, except you don't get anything but to watch. Most people don't think there's anything wrong with sex, so masturbation/pornography and the like should not be as greatly looked down upon as it is.

I'd say it can be art, insofar as acting can be an art, though there is also some photography that is fantastically done with porno, too.

as a woman, i'll admit that i sometimes enjoy watching porn. mostly amature stuff though. Fake moans and boobies don't really do it for me :(

but my boyfriend on the other hand, does not like porn at all. last time i mentioned it he mentioned something about how men get addicted to porn and then objectify women or something. i was too busy taking picutres of porn newspaper boxes that amused me to pay attention. He didn't want me to buy one :( i thought it would have made a great souvaneir.

Porn empowers women and makes them rich and powerful. We need more porn and less regulation of porn. Porn ensures that men give women money and also subsidizes the internet. Even ugly women have a place in porn, with some surgery.

That entire industry is pretty absurd. My friend told me he once fingered a stripper and her response was to take his hand and place it on her breasts instead, while telling him off.
I read a feature on collegehumor where a guy got to go visit a porn set. I forgot the exact words, but basically the actress was so annoying (as in didn't stop talking loudly) and everyone ignored her unless it was to give her directions on how to fuck.

I pretty much agree with this.

A lot of these discussions get conflated... some people end up talking about all possible porn that could ever exist (ie., the Platonic form of porn) and some people end up talking about porn as it currently is. Those are two very different things.

What about the 'extreme' stuff put out by pornographer Max Hardcore? I mean, I've read BoingBoing and a lot of people seem to defend the guy, despite the fact that he urinates and defecates on women while dressing them up as 12 year old girls. They don't look to be enjoying it, either. It would seem that more people should take offense to that, but many argue that 'it's okay as long as it's consensual', but that's a slippery slope argument for a myriad of reasons that I'm sure most people could figure out.

To my knowledge, porn actresses do not make a lot of money, unless they're highly influential persons like Jenna Jameson who run their own companies. Those who appear in a few videos don't make a lot, and they basically have to do hundreds of videos if they want to make a lot of money. The directors, publishers and distributors take the large bulk of the profits and there is no union for porn actors to demand higher salaries. Anyone complaining is usually just fired because there are so many new people who want the job.

There have been scandals with internet websites like SuicideGirls, in the past, where models were given strict contracts that essentially took away their right to being photographed by magazines or outlets other than SG, and SG also sold their photos to other websites (e.g. free porn sites) without giving them the profits. There was also mention of how some of them were "encouraged" to participate in BDSM public exhibitions and things like that if they were expected to be called up again for a new contract. A model who doesn't play by their rules wouldn't have her contract renewed.

Porn empowers women and makes them rich and powerful. We need more porn and less regulation of porn. Porn ensures that men give women money and also subsidizes the internet. Even ugly women have a place in porn, with some surgery.

Basically porn makes the world go around.

    Umm... no?

Porn preys on women, and disempowers them.
It can, and frequently does, but I don't think by definition it disempowers women.

Sorry, when talking to KevinNash, it's important to disreguard subtlety and shades of gray.

However, the industry is, by definition, exploitative. Both to men and women. The problem is, somehow, people got convinced that fucking for money and an audience was empowering, and suddenly the porn industry became some kind of feminist icon.

In other news, Maxim Magazine has just been presented the Susan B. Anthony Award by Gloria Allred.

I equate a lot of the entertainment industry to acting in the same manner. Whenever I see Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, or even windbags on celebrity reality shows to being about as stupid; and yet they get paid piles more money basically because their industry is respected more. The only difference between Britney Spears in a music video and Aria Giovanni boning a chick is that one is a cocktease and the other doesn't tease.

    Mate.

A girl is allowed to tease you. And you are not allowed to immediately demand sex because of it and expect it to happen. You are not ruled by your goddam cock.

I know world is scary right.

Jesus christ this sentence is pathetic, not because you are stupid, but because of how you think it's a reasonable thing to say.

Your honor, I did not commit rape cause she was being a cocktease!

Feral sometimes I don't know why you bother posting your reasonable statements mate. The arguments afterwards have already conflated again.

...He was saying that pornography is just another form of entertainment, like Britney, or Paris. The difference is that one is pretending to want sex, and the other is generally actually having sex.

I think you've greatly misunderstood the sentiment here.
