I'm telling you, I'd use OSX (or at least try it out) if I could install it on my PC.

I'm sure I'm not alone. They'd instantly sell a bajillion copies of OSX if you could install it on any PC. I don't know if they'd retain those customers, but.... I know I'd have to have dual-boot, for Windows programs and games and stuff.

you can say whatever you like, but the bottom line is that Apple isn't run by idiots and they are making mountains of money hand over fist. Last year there was a story about Apple having an 18 Billion dollar safety stash, just sitting there for a rainy day.

  • bentbent Registered User
I don't think anyone's doubting that Apple are loaded.

Yeah but it's all iPod money. Mac/OSX still sits at like 5-7% market share (depending on who you ask).

Yeah Microsoft used to have a big ass rainy day stash too and Apple is gonna need there's if Jobs croaks soon.

They haven't moved much in total market share, but if you look at the percentage of Apple machines sold in retail on a monthly or yearly basis, it's been steadily rising (albeit slowly) for years now.

They'll never take much of the total market share because there are already so many corporate windows machines out there that can't change platforms because it would mean changing most of their infrastructure and retraining their entire workforce. Same goes for *nix.

Macs on a corporate level are fucking insanely stupid. SO STUPID.

For starters, apple doesn't do volume licenses.

    I'm not arguing that

I'm just saying it means that their market share will never be enormous no matter how successful they become

Actually, that second part isn't always true. Especially in my field.

Still, try getting a bunch of macs acting fine on an enterprise level network and... well, it's a fucking pain.

if windows 7 comes out with positive reviews which seems like it will be the case maybe all the people considering getting a mac will reconsider and just get windows 7

that could be a problem for apple

every osx dock ive seen has been ridiculous

like 70 things lined up across the bottom

also i never got how it would blend well when you got things open in fullscreen
its kinda like the taskbar where a fullscreen thing doesnt go down past the top of the dock right?
but theres empty space at the sides which looks like wasted space

i'm not sure why people leave all the shortcut icons in the dock, i think they are just carrying over habits from Windows. the only items in my dock are applications that are always open and show me information (adium, RSS reader, torrent, mail, album art). That's all you need there. The rest of your programs are seconds away via Spotlight.

Here is how mine looks with maximized firefox:

    20090128-1d19pdtife6gn55xgtj8dr9dks.jpg

If I had a higher-res screen I wouldn't run it maxed out, but it's a Macbook so I do. Not a big deal. Obviously my dock are icons and such are modded.

    ICONS ARE TEH HUEG!!!!!!1111

Btw here's a neat tip for resizing desktop icons in Win7, works in Vista too, apparently. Left-click on the desktop, hold CTRL and scroll the mouse wheel. You can make the icons smaller than "small" this way.

This works for pretty much any sizing issues within windows. Try it in a web browser and BOOM, larger print.

Slashdot had an article last week about how Win7's taskbar isn't a ripoff of the dock.

    Slashdot.

Also, Ctrl+Scroll Wheel will resize the entire webpage in Opera, not just text, which I think is nice. Also, you can use the keypad for it, like 8 is +100%, 9 is -10%, 6 is back to normal, etc.

Oh, that does sound nice. I've never really tried Opera.

Unfortunately, the add-on I love in firefox never got ported to version 3... I may have to give Opera a shot.

Crtl+Scroll wheel resizes the whole webpage in firefox 3 also.

    No no no.

    You should encourage that.

As that increases the competition and makes Microsoft try harder.

Then you sit back and use the better version of windows.

So i was curious yesterday about trying the Beta and I went on the website. Then I got to the part where they're like "you need to know how to do stuff and things to your things, and stuff." So now I'm all like, "mannnnn I don't want to be troubleshooting my operating system on my own."

Is it really that much of a hassle? Because I'm interested. I just don't want too much hassle
