That's fine. The Dark Spire comes out on DS on April 14, so at least now I'll have time to finish that before Class of Heroes comes out.

Crazy good dungeon crawling times from Atlus.

I'd almost forgotten about this. Dark Spire looked moderately intriguing, but the preview notes I've seen from Jeremy Parish on 1up made it sound like the game was a little too old-school, even for my tastes.

Would you mind terribly linking me to said preview? I can't seem to find it on the website.

This is just published by Atlus, right? Not developed by one of their teams? Looks like the dev behind it are most known for Tenchu/Way of the Samurai.

Its gonna be real hard going forward for me to play a dungeon crawler without EO's map making system.

I have half a mind to play ____ with EO open on my DS in an attempt to use it with other games, even if I have to have a 2nd DS such games on the DS.

Does Dark Spire use a map-drawing system, or do Atlus somehow have that trademarked?

The delay is for the better. Gives me time to settle in to my new apartment and buy a DSi before buying a PSP, this, and a few other things for said PSP.

    ... WHAT?

Or you could do it old school style. Ya know, with graph paper? And you could buy a three-ring binder for all your maps with tabs separating different dungeons.

Heck, now that I think of it I may even do that.

Edit: Almost forgot - Dark Spire IS an Atlus game too. However I believe the map is auto-draw in this one.

I'm gonna open up photoshop and setup a grid and draw the maps there. I guess that means I'd have to play the game at home and not while on the go, but feh, if I'm going somewhere I'm going there to do something and not play games.

No, it's published by Atlus. Success is the developer.

Well, hand-drawn maps aren't necessary(see: Nocturne, Wizardry), just a neat feature. Auto-map works fine for me as long as the game's map provides all the needed details.

    So, the full story:
Now now, we understand the disappointment. Dungeon-crawling fans need their fix of item-finding, monster-bashing action. Unfortunately, days before the game was to be manufactured, a rather serious bug was brought to our attention. In order to fix the problem and deliver a worthy final product, one that lives up to the high standards we aspire to and that you deserve, we are delaying the game until June 9th.

We will under no circumstance ship a product with foreknowledge of such an issue
. We regret the situation and the timing in which we discovered it, but we will not compromise our quality standards... as a publisher, not as a humorist, because we clearly did that at the beginning of this email.

Bolded and limed for the win. Take some notes, NIS.

And now, on a lighter note:

    12.jpg

Also, this is definitely taking cues from Wizardry:

That Ash mechanic is straight out of Forsaken Land.

If only most publishers would do this when they find game breaking bugs. My favorite line from when I worked at one of these offending publishers was "It's a feature, ship it."

Game-breaking glitch in NIS America's Ar Tonelico II. It's only in the US version.

I don't know if they were aware of it or not(I find that hard to believe), but nothing's been done about it to my knowledge.

I think this was the one I was reading, from back in February. The game is super-Wizardry inspired, as the comic about the Dead -> Ash -> Lost revive states shows and, well, the fact that there's a wireframe mode at all. But strangely, it seems like you can have only four party members? I'm not sure about that but I remember seeing only four PCs in the screens I've seen.

EDIT: Wait, nevermind, I'm jumbling together Class of Heroes and Dark Spire. :x Both of them do seem pretty Wizardry inspired, but Parish's preview is talking about Dark Spire.

The early Wizardry games were cruel. I never played them much, and only the ones that got brought to the NES, but Etrian Odyssey is downright progressive in comparison. In the ones I played, for example, if your party wipes, they don't just die—their corpses literally drop and lie there in the square where they died. If you want them back, you have to create another party just to drag their bodies back and revive them—and you either paid obscene amounts of money at the temple to guarantee their revival, or you took the above chances with your PC priest and risk obliterating them for all eternity. BOOO. I guess. I mean, I wanted to play it, but what was the bug?

A reviewer at RPGamer found it while reviewing the game, although he hasn't said what it was. He was apparently able to finish the game, so it wasn't a gamebreaker, but I guess it was serious enough that they had him send over his save files so they could replicate it and get it fixed.

So apparently this game came out yesterday. Has anyone around here picked it up yet?

Just going by the scores of the initial reviews, it looks promising.

I really enjoyed EO, never finished it though. And Darkspire turned me right off. And yet here I am, pondering picking this up.

It's forgiveable as how many people really play handhelds with the sound on?

Have you listened to Etrian Odyssey's dungeon music? Especially the 4th and 5th Strata?

I don't know if it's just the generic anime trappings or what that make it seem softer, but this is appealing to me a bit more than Dark Spire right now, though honestly I still have both EO games half-finished so I should probably work on them first.

Curious to hear what you guys all think about this.

You know what the Dark Spire does?

It gives you claustrophobia, that's what it does. Everything, everything is half hidden in shadows, the interior is the most depressing game local I've slogged through in a while (I tend to avoid grey + brown games if I can), and there's that weird frame thing that covers up even more of the DS screen.

If you are homebrew-capable there is an application that lets you play music on your PSP while playing a game.

But yes that's a weird and kind of stupid choice for them to make.

Is there still battle music at least?

How are the puzzles in the game? I'm loving the Dark Spire but lack of quest notes or the ability to atleast mark your map drove me insane. Some of puzzles border on adventure game like mechanics. (I'm looking at you elevator quest). Some weird class and weapon balance issues but overall I really really liked the game and want something else to look forward to.

Am I really in such a small minority that just turns off the music to handheld games? Has there ever been any kind of survey or anything about how many actually listen to the handheld game music? I wonder if it is just a vocal minority of audiophiles or what.

Me? When I'm playing my DS at home, it is either waiting for something else to finish, in which case I'm waiting for some auditory cue to indicate that something has finished, or I'm listening to NPR or something on the radio.

Music/sound effects are really important for me. It keeps me "in the game". If I turn off all the sounds (like if I'm trying to be quiet) then I don't really enjoy the game all that much.
