Also, how many pokemon are there now? I played up to Gold and Silver but I can't say I liked them over RBY. I think the sheer amount of new pokemon and game mechanics put me off from getting into the new games.

You don't have to lose anything. Once you've beaten Platinum you can just put Sapphire into the GBA slot on the DS and transfer you old Pokémon over.
Pokémon Battle Revolution is a half assed piece of shit. You can only do 3vs3 fights against people online! Why the fuck would they stick us with such a dumb limitation?
