Seriously though, it's not about guilt, though I do assert that whites still benefit from racism and prejudice in this country, even if you do nothing personally to advance it.

We have advantages others don't, which helps us in school, in the workplace, and in being well represented in media and politics.

That's a whole nother can of worms I know almost no one here will agree with because they'll think I'm calling them racist or want them to feel guilty

    NEWSFLASH: GUILT IS USELESS

I'm interested in responsibility. I think we all, as human beings, have a responsibility to better our society, regardless of race.

    It can be that simple.

Being aware of racism, and fighting it, should be something you care about for that reason, if nothing else.

actually I think the most important thing to say about this whole RE5 controversy is who fucking cares

and before you get all "but the history of racism in this country means that" on me, keep in mind that pissing and moaning about possibly racist imagery in this game is going to do jack shit for race relations other than making you feel better about yourself, especially since a good portion of the people talking about it are probably going to buy it anyways!

I don't think anyone was asserting that this particular videogame would be the downfall of society. This thread very quickly quit being about the game in specific and became about racism in general, using the game only sometimes and then only as an example

also: the "who cares" argument isn't that great when the only action anyone is taking is posting on a forum. even a minimal amount of care can justify that investment

    Don't just not be racist.

Fight racism when you see it. When people say or do racist things, call them out. Try to do it in a persuasive way, if you can. Help them see why it hurts them and our society as a whole.

When Bill O'Reilly says something that a reasonable person could be offended by (emphasis "reasonable), don't look the other way or defend the slim chance he wasn't being prejudiced. Make it clear that that's not something you accept, or propagate.

Don't cross the street when you see a black guy in baggy jeans.

Simple, conscious efforts to act in a way that counters racism are good things. You can always do more, certainly, but being aware of racism and being clear about your unwillingness to tolerate it are the basic steps we should all take.

When we defend people who make what can be reasonably interpreted as racist statements, we do not act in a progressive fashion.

    Awareness is important.

Ideally it might be something some people won't buy the game over.

I'm not saying you have to boycott it, but defending it is flat-out moving in the wrong direction.

See, this is where you lose me. What you're asking me to do is basically make myself an arbiter of who is a racist and who is not because someone could have said something that could be taken in a wrong way. There's no value in discussing the matter or anything? It's just "Shit that guy said something about black people, dude's a racist, we don't take kindly to that kind of thing"?

I think we did just discuss the matter. Obviously there's always room for discussion, but a lot of times it's so obvious it's only one or two steps from just outright stating a prejudice.

    Like the Oreilly example

That example in particular was far beyond the qualification of a reasonable person finding it offensive. In fact, many people did find it offensive, and registered their complaints accordingly

You should have evidence and reasoning to justify your assertion that something is racist

but you shouldn't assume something or someone isn't racist unless they come out and say "I don't like black people"

    Yarpa.

It has much more to do with assumptions based on culture than assumptions based on race.

This has always pissed me the fuck off when I hear things about minority scholarships.

No shit for brains, Johnny who lives in the suburbs should not get an advantage over Jim who lives with his mom in the ghetto just because Johnny is black and Jim is white. Socioeconomic shit is where the focus needs to be, not on fucking skin color.

Saying that it somehow becomes unracist by the skin color of the protagonist is the same thing.

well a first reading of the comic is all "it is stupid to call the game racist based on the colours of the protagonist and shambling hordes"

after reading the newspost the comic becomes more "it would be nice if we could make the unsettling imagery go away by changing the colour of the protagonist, but it's not like that"

which I would call a very different direction

    That's fine.

Well, it might not be, because you shouldn't discriminate against the poor either, if you can manage to.

Still, if it's something that is separate from race or class and a dude looks just straight shady as fuck, there's nothing wrong with crossing the street.

I still try to avoid it because I know I'm almost never actually putting myself in danger by moving from one side of a public street to the other, unless it's hella dark and I'm literally the only other person on the street, but I'm also tall and male and have a beard that commands great respect and authority, so I'm not subject to the same kind of harassment that a someone with rude titties might get
