    Why not join all three?
    I always had the most fun trying to max out my rank in as many groups as I could join.
    Even if you chose not to rank in any but the thieves guild, there are advantages to even a rank 1 person in the fighter's or mage's guild...

    Are you sure you don't have to be found guilty to get the letter? I could never remember the conditions for that.

    No guilty verdict needed, just break into a place without using an open spell, or pickpocket 10 people in 24 hours... then wait 3+ days for your letter.

    Stealing something off store shelves (or not, depending on the circumstances) will also trigger it.

    Ah, Chesterwark. That's always the first place I go after leaving Privateer's Hold. It's got everything you need to get started, and is a nice, big town.

    As for what to do, I say !Fighter's Guild. Thiefing it up is nice, but getting the skills to be able to insert pointy end of knife into unsuspecting prey is good too.

    are you sure you dont have it? sometimes while travelling you can miss the pop up you get and not know the letter is actually already in your inventory. (a few letters from the main quest have done this to me)

    !Fighters Guild No need to join, just ask for a quest. Killing bats and rats and the odd sabertooth is good, clean fun. Seems that most residents of the bay were pretty stupid as to choice of pets.

    !Run around the inside of the city walls trying to unlock the doors in said wall as you go. ;-) I always found it a handy way to improve unlocking skills w/o having the guards pick up on you as quickly. They tend to cluster more towards the center of the towns.

    So. Now that Daggerfall has been released for FREE, I've decided to pick this up again, as somewhat of a guide or help for those new people who will be playing this for the first time.

    I dropped it due to a few save game corruption issues (which crushed my motivation. At least it wasn't Error 2, or else every single save would be corrupt.), but since I have backups leading back to Privateer's Hold, I should be able to resurrect this. So, I will be heading over to Arkcart with the latest save I have, retreading ground as I need to, and continue where I left off. However, I will be doing some pickpocketing to expidite the process of me getting my Thieves' Guild letter.

    I'm pretty sure the last time I beat Daggerfall I did it naked.

    Entirely possible if you know just how to cheese magic, but not recommended.

    Daggerfall is so good that Morrowind still didn't match it's content after a bunch of expansions.

    Has better models too!

    It's truly amazing what people did to make that game better (and worse) post-release.

    Yet it's still not as good.

    Don't get me started on Oblivion.

    I still think that Daggerfall might be the buggiest but still awesomely playable game ever made.

    You just need to be super careful.

    Blast from the Past Memory:

    PC Gamer Demo, years back. Second PC, a nice shiny P1 100MHZ with 4MB of RAM (later bumped it up to 16MB!) had to delete almost everything on my 1GB hard drive to install the demo. Out of this world.

    My first computer could technically run the demo, but the install was bigger than the Hard Drive!

    The game gets an inevitable bug that crashes it over and over if you take too long to start the main quest. Meet with her then go back to stealing everything (better idea: do it now and save screenshots, but roleplay that it happens later).
