    Nope

It was a well-made movie and it tugged on all of the right heartstrings

But it left me feeling empty. I guess what it has to say about childhood is "man, it's a good thing people grow up eventually"

I loved this movie. I love how it pin pointed how kids act. I know when I was a kid, and I had to tell a story, it wasn't some elaborate thing that I thought up right on the spot. It was shit similar to max's vampire biting the building story.

I think I liked this movie. But I don't understand who it was for.

It was too slow for little kids, too boring for older kids, too much of a kids movie for teens, and too arty for the majority of adults. So did they really make it for college kids and arty young adults? And if so, why did a studio greenlight it?

I just have so many questions.

    I understood it

I did think it reflected childhood well but

it just didn't do anything for me. It tried a little too hard to be sweet and sentimental and instead, I thought, fell flat, and the long protracted goodbye Max has with the monsters at the end was just a little too boring

The dialogue seemed a little repetitive at times and, although I understand the presence of the owls, they looked a little too idiotic compared to how great the monsters themselves looked

I liked the non-monster parts best, I think

    also, it sure was pretty

I think my favorite part was the owls' knock knock joke

If only because I tell that joke all the time

At the owl joke, a bunch of people laughed, and one of the groups of teenagers in front of us shouted "thats not even funny!" then one of them made a farting noise and they broke down in hysterics.

i wondered this too, and then i remembered that spike jonze's other two movies are being john malkovich and adaptation

and in interviews many people have repeatedly said that this is spike's personal vision and like his baby project and stuff like that

so what i'm thinking is that this is spike jonze's weird arty take on a kid's movie (generalization, but kind of the idea) and it was allowed to happen basically because the movie sells itself just with the title, jonze is an accomplished director (if not the one you'd immediately think of for this project) and if nothing else it had been in development hell for ages and he was the one that finally brought it out

At the very least, Maurice Sendak has nothing but praise for the movie.

    That's very nearly awesome.

Also, KW knocking the owls out of the sky with rocks would have been a lot funnier if I'd known that she wasn't hurting them.

no that part wasn't funny to me either, it was twisted

I think that was the point, the movie was pretty dark in places

    was this movie even like
    presented as a kid's movie
i mean, none of the ad spots i've seen for it paint it as a children's movie

  • Chompskers.Chompskers. Registered User
I wasn't totally sure what was being implied by the whole KW/owl thing,
Like, she had to knock them out of the sky with rocks to get them, then she carried them around under her arms after that.

I mean, it did not appear that they were there willingly.

most people will just assume that it is based on their familiarity with the book and not bother to have their mind changed

if that one blogger people were bitching about in the watchmen thread was completely convinced that watchmen was marketed as a children's movie just because it was a comic first and had a tv spot during american idol (in spite of, you know, everything else readily apparent about the film and property), it's not outrageous to think that people assumed this to be a children's movie

I haven't read the wild things book that dave eggers wrote, but I'm assuming this follows that much more closely
