You are making yourself look like a dumb idiot twice: First because tinkering around a little or asking around a little is too much for you, and second because you cannot accept any criticism of your attitude by a man who certainly has enough intelligence and experience to know what he is saying about it.

Well, I have a lot of Vista users playing D2X-XL, and they don't have problems. But looking at your attitude, it can only be D2X-XL that is causing problems on your perfectly setup machine only running the latest drivers and no superfluous bloatware at all. Good thing you haven't asked for help, that has saved you some more embarrassment.
Leave your hands off D2X-XL - I haven't made it for arrogant ingrates like you, and have had to do with too many of your kind to have any patience left for them. Stick with Rebirth (asshole free? Not even if you weren't using it ...), you haven't deserved anything better.

Descent 1 or Descent 2? That file normally is inside one of the main data files - maybe you have a problem with these (in case of which I could help you out).

Yeah, sure, I'm the troll here. I made some helpful criticism about your terrible site (by any standards and criteria), and you were a patronizing and condescending. You have 10 posts in this forum, and I've been here for years, and never had trouble with anyone. You blame everyone else for anything that goes wrong. No, it's not your site that sucks, the problem is that I'm used to well designed sites, yeah, we can agree with that.
I was not throwing a hissy fit about anything. I made a simple and reasonable suggestion that would have improved the experience: put all textures in a zip file, put all models in another zip file. A LOT of mods do that. It makes sense. Then, after braving the maze that's your site, I found another download page, one that contained the single models zip. Hooray. If the site was well designed to begin with, there would be a link to the full file in the individual file page.
Then, after your aggressive answer and wrong math, I made the perfectly reasonable suggestion about you fixing that site. I'm sure you're busy, but that's part of the project. And, if you didn't act like an asshole from your first answer, I'd have offered to make a decent, accessible site. Anyone can whip one up in 15 minutes, but that seems to be too hard to you. Oh, I never "screamed" at you, I was simply emphasizing a point, like people have been doing. You know, people normally link "screaming" to caps, which I didn't use.
Your severe level of self-delusion is pretty clear. It's my fault the site doesn't make sense. You blame my system (which runs heavy and even glitchy games like Crysis, Dead Space, Far Cry 2, Witcher, STALKER and many others like the 110 games I have on Steam without a hitch) for a problem which would be probably easy to fix. I do have the latest versions of all drivers, by the way. You blame your community for being stingy... Everything is not your fault. But you should consider that maybe people would donate a lot more money to a nice person with a well designed site. Maybe there is some setting in the Catalyst Control Panel that would fix that problem I had, but is not mentioned in the readme.
And how am I being selfish? That doesn't even make sense. I was trying to be helpful. If you made a good site, it would be better for you, first of all, for the people who want to use your mod, for a hell lot of people. I never intended for you to do anything just for me.

yes you're exactly the troll here. I simply said something about what made it difficult to find one's way through my descent site, apart from it not being perfect. Actually that was absolutely neutral and in no way personal or arrogant. You however took it completely personal and started to call me names and what not.

I'm not sure whether you know, but you can buy all 3 off of GOG, and then they're yours to keep, completely DRM free. Descent 1 and 2 can be had for $5.99, which is only $1 more than a basic gametap subscription.

You sound just like another case of "if I don't find everything within 30 seconds it's crap". If you think my web site could offer all it does in a significantly more accessible way, feel free to create that web site for me, and if I like what you've done, I will replace the old site with your version and give you due credit for it (plus lifetime free D2X-XL versions - oh wait, they're free anyway.
My web site isn't a maze. It has context dependent side scrolling menus guiding you around. It just happens to have a lot of stuff on it, so it takes a while to browse through it.
To get to the main D2X-XL page, click on the D2X-XL logo on the home page or on "D2X-XL" in the side menu.
To get to the main DLE-XP page, click on the DLE-XP logo on the home page or on "DLE-XP" in the side menu.
To get to the main downloads page, click on "Downloads" in the side menu.
The side menus will change depending on where you are to offer you links to additional, related content. They all have a link back to the home page and to their parent page.
Where do you get that much information and documentation even for a modern game, not to speak of a game that's almost 15 years old?
I think that if that is too complex too you, then about every computer application having a menu, or context menus must be too complex for you too. I am sorry that my web site doesn't adhere to the simplest forms of web site layout, but as I said: I have sunk more than enough time and energy into D2X-XL, and I am not gonna redesign the web site to accomodata a few people who want everything to be served to them on a silver dish.
Well, what difference do you think does it make for me whether you use D2X-XL or not? It would only make a difference for you. Ok then, don't download it. The world will keep spinning, right?

I have been talking about the web site issue with a few people in my forum, and I think the following measure will remove most of the problems have with it:
- menus will not be scrolling anymore but always be visible
- all downloads will be available or reachable from one central page (the downloads page will be restructured and made easier to read)
Dunno when I will get to do that though. Not right now.

So, anyone actually got that mod working? I haven't downloaded it yet since I've been busy, but since I still have a possible LP on the back burner I'm wondering if I should try to get it working to pretty things up, or keep it old-school and play through the way I did back when Descent came out..

I really want to make that mod work, but it always freezed on "preparing Renderer" for me. I think that it has something to do with some video option or config. The "loading" parts went on fine, so I don't think it was a file problem, even with all the moving of files around. Maybe I should try some compatibility settings, I don't really know.
I checked the foruns, but saw no similar problem on the thread titles, and I couldn't find a "search" option.
The mod does look a hell lot better than vanilla or Rebirth, seems worth a try. Maybe you should try it (on a separate installation) and tell us if it worked.

To be honest, I don't think you will have any problems, the install procedure is about the same as Rebirth. The game boots up for me, it only crashes when I try to run a level.
Rebirth was very easy to get running for both 1 and 2, but the graphical improvements for D2X-XL intrigued me so I ended up look at it on Youtube.
There are a few things I'd really like to have--namely, higher-resolution 2D sprites and some of the weapon effects and shadows--but the thing as a whole seems a little...overdone. I'd probably just get a graphical mod for Descent 3 for things like outdoor stages.
Instead we get enlightened as to the fact that the creator of D2X-XL is a 150-piece high-grade stainless-steel toolbox.
Which while funny is less overall fun.

And has anyone successfully installed D2X-XL? I consider myself pretty experienced in doing weird installations, but this is just poorly worded or something. Am I supposed to put all the files from D2X into my Descent 2 install, or my Descent 2 files into the folder I extracted D2X to?
I always loved the vulcan cannon in D2. Those claw guys? Yeah, I'm gonna pin you in place until you fucking blow up.
The Gauss cannon didn't have nearly the same fun factor, although it was frequently my weapon of choice for taking out grouped-up robots. I relied too much on the energy-to-shield converter to use the Helix too much.
Goddamnit I'm so going to play through D2 again, now.

you extract D2xxlxl to the descent 2 folder
then you copy the files to the new folders, and make some other folders. It's all very badly explained. I mean, I managed to make it work with Rebirth, so it's not me being stupid. I also have Freespace 2 SCP working, and several other mods added to many games.
Anyways, i think my problem is not in the file arrangement, because it crashes after loading, during "preparing renderer".
EDIT: OHHH, got it working!!!
It's better to prepare the folders BEFORE unzipping the mod, and what fixed it for me was setting my Catalyst profile to max compatibility, i.e., Catalyst AI OFF.
It's pretty nifty, this mod, the lighting and textures are great, although the shadows are completely fucked. It's definitely worth the hassle.
If you're wondering how to install Descent 2 on your Mac it's a lot easier than you think. There's a file in your D2 disc called descent2.sow or something, which just so happens to be a compressed archive of all the D2 files you'll need to run D2X-XL or DXX-Rebirth. To install D2 from this file open it using stuffit expander and then take the new files and use them in a manner prescribed by your source port's installation instructions. If that doesn't work, copy the .sow to your computer and replace the file extension with .arj and try again.
P.S. D2X-XL is pretty neat but doesn't run quite as well as I'd like. Mind you, I'm playing it using my MBPs Geforce 9400, but I'm loath to turning switching cards unless I'm working. It's such a hassle.
I'm not sure if you can make hamachi work for a game like this since there's no Lan option, but I remember back when there was the MSN Gaming Zone there was some open room areas that would let you connect Doom or Descent era games online.
If there's any other service like this it should work.
It did/does support LAN play (over IPX) -- that was the whole idea of multiplayer since online gaming was rather uncommon back in the day. The modern ports also support native TCP/IP, making Internet play pretty trivial.
I know D2X-XL has a "tracker" feature, i.e. a primitive server list, built-in, but I haven't mucked around with it at all. Maybe someone can figure out a nice server to use and Game On this bitch.

The original "Destination Saturn" shareware of Descent is the best Descent of all time even if it doesn't feature all of the story or the missions because what it does have is PORGYS.
What is PORGYS you ask? Not the movie, fool, no, this is a cheat code. This cheat code does not, if memory serves, work in the retail game. PORGYS gives you the super treatment. It gives you all guns. It gives you all missiles.
And then it makes your weapons fire super fast.

There are about 100 D3 online multi players now. Few play every day. Most play weekly. BOZ are bots to practice with but multi is only way to go. Never liked single player. Played D1 and D2 on the Playstation in combat mode with two systems. I like D3 much better. Faster action. Vauss is my weapon of choice. Some levels like Subway have modified weapons. I'm only a B player but if anyone wants to play D3 just ask. I get a 50 to 80 ping on DRH servers. There are 42 levels up to use right now. We need to keep this sport alive. We are a mutant group so put on your thick skins. Most player are great friends to have. There are some... well they blow up just a little brighter

Yeah i'm one of those oldskoolers you hear about but don't know much about. back in the day it was really something. you get on kali and you can find about ten to twelve games going on at any one time. and the server was just PACKED. If kali was a room, you couldn't stretch your arm out without smacking someone who played well.
these days it's slim pickings. you have to almost beg and steal to get a game of D1 and D2 going. But it's good to know people are picking it up again. I might dust off my 3dpro and get back in.
one last thing: the OP made an AWESOME post. I haven't had that good of a read in a while. loved every single bit of it. Do you take commisions?
