Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

[G&T]The *unofficial* PA Gaming Server

Okay, interest is pretty high from what I've seen, so let's get this ball rolling.

Please suggest (in this thread) 3 games you'd like to be on a game server.

After this thread is complete, we'll have a final vote to see what makes the cut.

KEEP IN MIND THAT MODS COUNT AS A SEPARATE GAME, SO TEAM FORTRESS CLASSIC AND COUNTER-STRIKE DON'T COUNT AS 1 HALF-LIFE SERVER.

My suggestions are:

Battlefield 1942
Desert Combat
Call of Duty

P.S - Gonna try and get alphamonkey to give this the sticky treatment.

BF1942+DC is all I really care about, and I'm hoping to get Call of Duty soon enough. It'd be nice to have a Counter-strike server if we get enough participation.

    Because pings increase with distance.

True, but with technology nowadays it doesn't get that bad.

I've played in European servers and gotten 80 pings instead of 40, which is perfectly acceptable.

I can deal with a ping of ~120 or so. What you dont realise is Oz is on the completely opposite side of the world to the US. While Europe is just around the corner. SO usualy my pings to any US server are of the 300-500 variety.

Hell i get pings of ~100-150 going from me to Sydney or New Zealand.

    I got 512/128 DSL btw

Depends on how many hops you need to take. I never play anywhere outside my half of the US because the pings just get too bad.

Exactly. Getting out of Australia is ugly. To play shadowbane in Asia (servers in Hong Kong) the connection was routed through to Calafornia then Tokyo then Hong Kong. They since fixed that but thats just an example.

I would recommend setting a ping cap that kicks people who get above like 140-160 ms or so.

A ping cap would be a good idea it would limit the number of players and also keep the game from lagging so much. Also we may have to invest in some anti hack programming.

Yeah, 'cause 56kers don't deserve to game.

A laggy player does NOT lag the game. If that is the case, whatever engine you have been playing is not fit for online play at all.

It's not really "investing" in anti-hack programming... it's free. And I'm more inclined towards the whole 'active admins who permaban all cheaters' approach.

And these are for PC games ONLY.
