I've never played SoC and I'm eager to try it out. I support this.

Also, re: Mike's list of games not to play on a train: darts.

I brought Catan last year but it didn't get used =(. There's a travel version - does anyone have that?

I swear to god I remember either myself or somebody else playing Catan last year.

    Maybe.

I think someone did indeed play catan, I'm just saying my set didn't get used, and I didn't get to play. I was otherwise occupied... D&D? I think that's where the lion's share of my time went last go round.

Yeah, I'm thinking the Zombies! board game I'm bringing might not be a god idea due to the train shaking. *Shakes his head* So many plastic Zombies.

    Seafarers.

If you bring this, I'd be all over it. I have Cities and Knights, but have never tried Seafarers. Are you planning on bringing it anyway? I'll try to pack my set if you don't, but I don't know what my luggage situation will be yet.

The second batch of Forum Badges have been sent to TimeCruiserMike for him to distribute on the WCTT train. He will have a total of 100 to hand out. If he runs out you can always pick up your badge from the BYOC registration desk at PAX itself.

I think I'm at the point where I may pack a second bag just for board games. If that's the case, then one box for Catan won't be that much of a hardship. I'll load up my small rolling suitcase sometime this weekend to see what fits.

Oddly, I've never played cities&knights, and I'd love to get in on some of that... No worries though.

I generally played with Cities and Knights. I have forgotten why we didn't play with seafarers.

Is Seafarers the one with the barbarians that destroy cities? I hate that.

Seafarers adds ships, water tiles, and a pirate that functions like the robber, while splitting the map up into islands separated by water. There are a bunch of different scenarios, some of which have modified rules like a fog of war that reveals the contents of a tile only once it has been explored. Overall, it's the same game with more interesting map variants.

Cities and Knights changes a lot of the rules, adding a three new commodities, movable knights, more interesting development cards, the ability to purchase city upgrades, and yes, the barbarians that pillage your cities. In my experience, it's rare that the players will actually let that happen, as my group tends to play fairly defensively.

How long does a game of Seafarers usually take, SlickShughes? C&K is a great addition, but it does boost the playtime to something like 4-5 hours. Also, do you have any of the 5-6 player expansions? I only have the base games.

Ladies shirts are an option, but there will be a bit of a surcharge on them.. My goal still remains about $10/shirt, the ladies shirts due to such a small quantity(2 so far) are three times the cost of the regular shirts. The ladies shirts will probably be $13-14/shirt

@Novex: What size for the ladies shirt?

Don't worry about the ladies shirt, just get her a mens medium, she reckons they fit her better so it should be right.

It appears it is the fairer sex that may be crossdressing.

I'll be bringing my noobalicious deck, I'm new to the game and it's my first attempt at building one. One of my cohorts used to play in junior high and I've gotten him back into it, so he'll be bringing his (recently purchased starter) deck too.

oh this looks like it will be fun then. There shall be a bunch of us MTG noobs. we should hold some sort of tournament. Very loose of course but we can have 3 games and winner of the two can go onto the next round. although all that can be organized on the train.

  • MoreGreaseMoreGrease Registered User
That would be fun. I'll be bringing my starter deck, too.

Oh Snap! I heard about this PAXTrain phenomenon on the Rebel FM podcast last week, and...I traded in my plane tix for train tix, via the links provided at the beginning of this thread. Thanks for that.

I'm very impressed with the organization and excitement you guys exhibit, and it has rubbed off on me in a big way--gross, I know.

As for the important stuff: I play videogames in every genre and enjoy German board games (Ticket to Ride, Lost Cities, etc).

See you guys when the #14 hits Sacramento!!!

Welcome! Another PAXTrainer is always good news. We've had a bit of a breakdown in the organization recently due to economic difficulties for some key members, so if you could look through the lists of nice things to bring and share with your fellow train riders, that would be handy. Anything from more snacks and power strips to an LCD or speakers would be appreciated (The TV especially, as I don't think we have one yet).

Wow. I think I may be able to help with that, actually. I have a 26-inch LCD Bravia that I'm not really using right now. My question is, where would I store it during PAX? It would be quite the load, especially since I haven't yet solidified a floor to crash on the Thursday night we arrive in PAX-land.

    Any suggestions?

P.s.... As for your secret Rebel FM reference: nice!

It looks like I'll have a place for myself and the tv friday-monday, but since arriving thursday is a new development, it could be a problem for the tv. I'll be doing further research on the matter in the meantime.

Aw MAN, I completely forgot there was a WEST Coast train trip to PAX! I've never had the chance to use it before (always train home to Seattle at the beginning of summer), but with summer classes at UCSB just ending, and me looking for a way to get home in time for PAX, I'm totally down for this!

I'm 22/Male/Nice-Smelling/Non-Creeper, and a veteran of the Starlight SB->SEA run (I remember when there were only 3 or 4 outlets per car...fun times) Snacks and power cords are my main contribution - I know I have at least 2 power squids, and with a little help I could make a Costco Run and grab a metric ass-ton of snacky goodness for the ride up.

In terms of gaming, I have a few PS2 games and 1 controller, and one of those Pacman Plug-and-Play boxes (this: http://www.gameluv.com/media/users/cath52/0407-pacstick2.jpg) - 4 versions of Pacman should make for a fun few hours  Maybe I can find a DS before I go too...

That's about it - with any luck I'll see yous guys when I get on in Santa Barbara!

Alright, just got off of an organization call with some of the other PAXtrain staff. Right now we have a 19" monitor and two 360s confirmed as coming. We also have all the rock band instruments except a foot pedal for the drums. Also, the drum set being brought is an old RB1 set, so if anyone is bringing some RB2 drums, that would be awesome.

George, Ben (big Ben), and some of the other faces you know and love from telling you to quiet down and hide your beer two years in a row won't be there this year. We have people to pick up the slack, but most of us aren't getting on until the bay area, so it's going to be a much more self-policing environment on the way up. Luckily, if the last two years are any indication, people haven't actually needed to be told to take it down a notch until after 10 PM or so when people are going to sleep. By then, most of us should be onboard.

On the conference call, we briefly discussed movie options. Movie nights have been huge hits previously, so no reason to break a good tradition. Right now we're looking at a ton of British movies, including Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and two movie-izations of Discworld books. Or, I'm also bringing as many rifftrax as I can fit on my mp3 player, which I can just plug into a 360 to play. The most popular rifftrax options among the staff call seem to be Tron and Red Dawn. But I have almost every one, if there's a particular one you want to see, mention it.

The room-share thread is probably your best bet. If nothing else, I'm sure someone in here could repay your TV-kindness with a room-share on thursday night.

Because this was a problem last year and I suspect that Amtrak hasn't become any less anal about it; Amtrak doesn't allow you to drink alcohol that you did not purchase on the train. If you choose to do so please do it discretely. If keeping it out of sight is a problem for you I would suggest that you check out these links

these sites offer a variety of inconspicuous covers for your beer cans

On the subject of movies. I brought the Wargames and Real Genius we watched last year and this year, I'll be bringing a selection of my nerd movies, haven't decided yet what all I'm going to bring. I'm thinking of TRON, 300, Raiders (for the riff trax I have of them), Fifth Element, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and probably others. Those are just the ones I can see from right here.

I'll also have all seasons of futurama plus the movies and south park on my laptop for killing time.
