I think this was already done. They talk about it on the PA Podcast for the comic about Battlefield 2142 advertising. Some other service replaced in game textures and gave you interstitial ads and let you play the games for free. Might have been Gametap or something I don't know, it never came to Europe and I assume died on its arse.
