Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
I like making mix CDs every now and then, and today I decided to make a winter mix, so I went through my 2300-song library looking for winter-themed music. I didn't find as much as I thought I would, although I'm sure I missed a bunch.
Anyone have any suggestions for songs about winter (any aspect of it), that are not traditional Christmas songs (i.e. no "Winter Wonderland")? I listen to mostly indie and alternative, although I'm open to pretty much any genre (within reason; no death metal or blatant emo, etc.) It doesn't even have to have lyrics about winter, as long as it feels "wintery".
Here's what I have so far:
Simon and Garfunkel- I Am a Rock (a winter's day/in a deep and dark December)
Ben Folds Five- Brick (six a.m. day after christmas/i throw some clothes on in the dark)
Death Cab for Cutie- The New Year (so this is the new year/and i don't feel any different)
Jethro Tull- Another Christmas Song (how many wars you fighting out there this winter's morning?)
John Lennon- Happy Xmas (so this is Christmas/and what have you done?)
Rammstein- Spieluhr (in a cold winter night/the small heart is awakened)
Stars- Set Yourself on Fire (in a village on the hills/house buried to the windowsills in snow)
System of a Down- Streamline (my love waits for me in daytime/but i can't see you through the snowblind)
The Arcade Fire- Neighborhood #1 (if the snow buries my neighborhood)
The Decemberists- The Crane Wife 1 and 2 (it was a cold night/and the snow lay round)
The Smashing Pumpkins- Winterlong (we built a fire winterlong/transformed new wire winterlong)
I might also throw in some instrumental songs that I feel have a "wintery" mood.
Though they mainly write and cover winter songs (sans words), Mannheim Steamroller has some amazing stuff, as well as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Kind of borderline for what you're looking for, but most of their stuff doesn't have words, so I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.
All of Decemberunderground by AFI, as well as Death of Seasons off Sing the Sorrow.
198d by At the Drive-In always give me thoughts of snow, but it's kinda post-apocalyptic snow.
Pictures of You by the Cure purely because of the music video.
Snow ((Hey Oh)) by Red Hot Chili Peppers if you want to ignore the fact that it's actually about cocaine no matter what anyone says.
Alot of Sigur Ros songs remind me of winter, but it might now do it for you, another 198d case.
EDIT: Also, I guess you gotta be careful about what the songs true meanings are such as 198d being about the drummers mother being killed by air raids in Lebanon, Snow being about recovering from a Cocaine addiction and Brick being about a teenager getting an abortion.
TSO is great, if a bit repetitive at times. Some of it is traditional Christmas music (albeit with electric guitars), but other stuff is just kickass holiday-sounding stuff. Case in point: Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24).
Cave In - Seafrost
Anything by Sigur Ros sounds wintry
Pink Floyd - When The Tigers Broke Free ('there was frost in the ground/when the tigers broke free')
Most stuff from Pink Floyd's Momentary Lapse Of Reason sounds wintry, but I'd suggest 'Terminal Frost'.
Skinny Puppy - Dead of Winter
:Wumpscut: - Die in Winter
The two Haujobb mixes of the latter are better than the original. One of them is on the original album (Bunker Gate Seven), the other is on a hard to find Remix Wars EP.
I have a soft spot for Vangelis' Antarctica soundtrack even though I still haven't seen the film. It's always winter there, right? =P
Basically anything by Belle and Sebastian will do. Their songs might not have very many wintery themes but seriously that music was made to be listened to in the cold.
Edit: Oh, and Cold December by Matt Costa is the greatest winter song ever.
I'm sure a million bands have done covers of Hazy Shade of Winter, but it's a great song and should be on your list. If you can find it I recommend the version by Bodyjar - Aussie punk band so they should gel with your tastes.
May-December - Mos Def (a nice instrumental from Black on Both Sides)
December - Weezer (from Maladroit)
December - Damien Jurado (from Ghost of David, it's really cool, actually, good winter song)
December 4th - Jay Z (it's a song about his birthday, not Winter really)
"winter"
Hell's Winter - Cage (really cool hip hop song, great Winter stuff)
Winter Warz - Ghostface Killah (gangsta rap)
Summer (Klute's Weird Winter Remix) - Mogwai (sorta cool)
Winter Sadness - Kool & the Gang (awesome)
Winter '68 - The Black Angels (cool rock song)
The Winter Moon - Dyno Spectrum (decent rap song)
Hot Winter's Day - Prefuse 73 (glitch techno, can't really recommend it for a Winter mix)
I made a Winter mix, too, but I can't be bothered to type out all the artists, so here's a sloppy cut/paste job from iTunes. Mainly instrumental stuff:
La Femme D'Argent Air Moon Safari 1999
Space Age Bachelor Pad Music (Foamy) Stereolab the groop played "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music" 1993
A Little Longing Goes Away The Books Lost and Safe 2005

I am just going to post this here, I cannot find 'Carol (or call,) of the Bells' by Trans Siberian Orchestra anywhere. Not on any of their CD's, not on Zune, can't find it anywhere to download or anything!
All of Decemberunderground by AFI, as well as Death of Seasons off Sing the Sorrow.
Brown'd for shitty, shitty music. Lime'd for good music.
Additionally, the Vince Guaraldi Trio's soundtrack to Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown has some excellent stuff on it. The instrumental version of "Christmas Time is Here" belongs on any winter/holiday CD.

Lyrics!
I actually thought about that, but it's not about winter, it's about cocaine.
Meet Barack Obama
Linkin Park - My December (although december is just a metaphor for his depression, so.. maybe not this one.)
Nice idea for a mix tape though.

Only actually mentions winter once or twice, but always makes me think of it. Plus, its just an awesome song.

Joshua Radin- Winter
If you watch Scrubs you've probably heard his music
and
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's- On a Freezing Chicago Street
That man is an amazing artist.

A Santa Cause is a punk-rock X-Mas album. It's pretty good.
also, dj TAKA's V.
Featuring Metallica? That's a weird pairing.
Aha, and according to this page:

It's not actually labelled as "Carol of the Bells" on the CD you can still buy, which is Christmas Eve and Other Stories. It's track 8.
