I'm going to go with "other folksy variants allowed," since most of the stuff I like is of that ilk. The stuff that isn't Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash, I mean. Or Neil Young. My country-esque tastes lean toward folk rock/bluegrass/alt country or whatever the eff they're calling it these days.

An older post but I'd say Ryan Adams is arguably one of the best singer-songwriters of modern times. Too bad it looks like his Meniere's disease is finally getting the best of him.
