Aspiring writer/artist/animator

For a while now my goal in life has been to eventually get an animated show(preferably 3d though only if the quality could at the very least be almost as good as advent children). And I feel that a good first step would be to start writing my idea as a novel, which i will eventually turn into a comic, which eventually I would like to turn into a series. I was just wondering, those of you who are seasoned writers and artists, what are some good things to keep in mind when writing a fiction story? What things should I avoid doing that may turn people off to my story? Would making short bios for my characters(something I plan on doing, literally, right after Im done posting this) be a good idea to get people to actually connect with them easier.

Now I know my above mentioned goals are somewhat...lofty, maybe even unrealistic depending on who you're asking. But I hope with practice, and a well enough told story Ill be able to realize them. Thanks ahead for any advice I may or may not recieve.

lofty? no I don't think so. worked for this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Paolini

just be aware that a novel could take what? a year in writing, and another three in editing.

the comic would take about 2 years if it is lengthy, or perhaps more. and the series probably will change your whole story.

i'm not a seasoned writer or artist, but here's my two centavos.

    1) read fiction, lots of it.
    2) avoid cliches and hackneyed ideas, avoid writing that would be deemed "bad" and do not pretend you're the next tolkien.
    3) number 2 only applies if you're like most of us here, but I'm sure people who liked the davinci code or whatever won't mind it.
    4) write the bio's for your story for yourself mostly. unless its on a videogame booklet, no one will read the character bios. but still write them, character bios and creation sheets are great tools to really flesh out your characters.

and yeah, that's it. good luck and all.

edit: wait what? write short bios for people to connect with your characters? what's keeping you from characterization and character development and all that good stuff in your story?

I suggest taking a creative writing course or something.

Well what I meant by "so people can connect to them" was if by knowing all of my characters completely inside and out, their history, their personalities, their likes, their dislikes, what makes them mad or happy will it make them come to life more.

And yes the bios would be for my personal use, to organize or summarize the characters.

    answer is: yes.

Yea I figured it couldnt hurt. Now do any of you write first summarize the chapters or parts you're writing for your respective stories? I came up with about 25 story arcs and summarized them, Ive just begun expanding on the arcs I came up with by ploting out the exact course of events in the chapter. Anyone else do this?

My advise would be simply get as much practice in as possible. Remember that everyone thinks they can write, although most can't. Try writing short stories and publishing them on a blog and then getting it around. You may get a small following and also remember that when it comes to anything in life, especially making it into a competative industry, it's not really what you know, it's who you know. So try and network with people who are where you want to be. Offer to buy them lunch so you can pick their brains and don't be cheap about it and you'll learn more than you would believe.
