Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it,
follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given
their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
Architecture is boss (images)

The LVMH building isn't that exciting I guess, though the ugly buildings either side make it look better. The interesting thing is what happens if there is a fire. There's a system that creates a waterfall inside the building that runs down the glass, preventing the fire from spreading to the other floors...only it kinda...uh...ruins the building in the process....
I kinda love architecture. It's an expensive hobby though, and there's an awful lot to learn if you want to be "into architecture".
The neighbours are so so so so so angry about that. It definitely looks neat and is apparently nice to go to school in but the people who live around it are very very pissed off about it and I think that is understandable.
I actually work for an architect. 95% of architects do just usual buildings and then there are a couple Gehrys and Liebeskinds who built these horrible monstrosities that inspire people to become architects and then they lose little bits of their souls every time they have to design an outhouse.
This is brilliant as well.
I hated that airport, especially that design
lol ergo ergo wut
How's that brown wooden cabinet coming along, Dru? Does it fit well into your living room? Put some glass figurines in it, hm?
also not pictured are the apartments they built in the swamp

"We're going to have all this knocked through and made into one big-"
"HE KILLED THE BEST MAN"
"bloody hell"
this is just awful
Because some people are educated and have taste
and other people are common and like ugly things
It was designed by Jawas.
All the stuff in Dubai is so fucking repulsive and garish, it actually makes me throw up.
just because something has weird shapes and lots of color doesn't make it good
none of those things employ the slightest amount of theory
I agree with you on all accounts
The ominous sky is so appropriate for it, though. God, that place is fucking weird.
Complete with conspiracy theories!

Oh definitely.
Also, if you compare the old Georgian architecture in my city
with the new stuff
I really love the look of the georgian quarter waaay more. it has a whole "feel" to it.
I love churches and cathedrals. I visited Paris (well, technically there on business) last spring and I don't think I walked by a single church without at least poking my head in. Lots of cool stuff there.
Also, growing up in saint louis we had the new cathedral: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/Cathedral_Basilica_of_St._Louis.JPG
Largest mosaic collection anywhere in the world. It's a byzantine building, though I think the gothic buildings are cooler, I still dig the new cathedral.
Yeah, I considered posting that. I don't really buy into conspiracy theories, but that building is strange enough to earn them, I suppose.
Except that the point of them is that we make a lot of assumptions about "obvious" functionalities that aren't necessarily true.
Thank you.
Also, I don't even get "functional" point in architecture. If we would go for something as theoretical and abstract as "function", all buildings would be concrete blocks.
And even on a lower level, I much prefer aesthetics over function. A lot of old houses, for instance, have all kinds of funky corners and odd shaped walls which aren't functional, but it would be oh so nice to live in them.
This also holds for other design areas: I recently bought a coffee table worth about a month salary for me, and it is not nearly as functional as a cardboard box. But it makes me much happier than a cardboard box, because I thoroughly enjoy its aesthetics every time I'm in the living room.
Bottom line: rethink "functionality"
although I can't help but think of Civ3
Geisel Library at UCSD.
Mwah, mwah
I love this thread
I'll be back to post more beautiful things soon
you look at his buildings and go "WHOAAA THAT SHIT MUST BE CRAAAZY ON THE INSIDE" but the facade is just this retarded ass frame for what are largely pretty basic rectangular volumes
and the facade sucks ass anyway
Face wearing a jaunty hat on the right side of the building
have you seen cremaster
this is relevant
I think his buildings can be pretty damn hit-or-miss, but none of the ones I've been in or seen the interior of I would say are "pretty basic rectangular volumes."
Nope
But now I want to
really? it's so
eh
though the turbine hall is such a great space
