SEEKING: A Multi-region DVD player with added features

I've been watching my non-R1 movies on a Daewoo for some time, and it seems to have given up the ghost. So I'm looking for a new multi-region player, but I'd like to take advantage of the advances made since 2002. Specifically, I'd like to find a multi-region DVD/VCR combo, but also one that incorporates a USB slot to watch videos in other formats-- Divx, WMV, etc.

Can anyone offer recommendations?

I can't reccomend anything in particular, but my $20 DVD player for years ago was turned into a region 0 (region free) player by a simple software hack using the remote. I found the code for it online.

I know I can find a multi-region. The issue is really finding one that has the VCR and USB functions-- for combining functions, saving space, etc.

I don't know what that means.

EDIT: Looking it up, it still doesn't look quite like what I'm looking for.

I think machines like the ones you want aren't made anymore, not because of the VCR function, but because manufacturers went "waiwaiwai, why are we making it easy for them to play digital files?"

You can build a small form factor PC that will play DVDs from any region, that will play your fancy XviD/DivX video files, that will record television programs to a hard drive and/or a DVD-R, and that will stream movie files from other computers in your house. It's surprisingly cheap, and fun to build.

    Daedalus,

I honestly don't have enough faith in my laptop or my network to try and make it the heart and soul of my home entertainment options. That's why I'm looking for a dedicated piece of hardware.

pretty sure the oppo dvd players can be made region free just by entering in a code on the remote. they also have divx/xvid, up-converting, and all that cool stuff. no VCR though.

Do you know what file formats the Oppo allows through the USB, and if it needs to be in FAT32 or if it can use NTFS?
