Buying an XBox360 120Gig Hard Drive

saint2esaint2e Registered User regular
Hey gang,

The 40 GB HD in my XBox 360 is jam packed with saved games, and DLC (mostly for Rock Band 2, and Lips), and it's reaching Critical Mass.

I'm looking into buying a 120Gig HD, and I'm just looking for some feedback from those who have gone this route before. Apparently there is a cord you can use to copy stuff from the one HD to another, but it's not included with the HD? I may be wrong here.

I can get the Hard Drive for $160 in my area, and a new XBox with 60Gig HD would run me $300, 120Gig version would run me $400 for comparison. (I've seen people remark before "You may as well buy a new XBox!")

So what do you guys suggest, and what experiences, if any, have you had with what I'm thinking about doing.

I found a used 120gig hd on the cheap on Amazon from some vendor (totaled about $70) and I got the disc and cable from Microsoft for free.

If you just look for the hard drive on the cheap, you should be able to get the transfer stuff from Microsoft. I still have mine if your search is unsuccessful.

My friend bought himself the 120gig HD not too long (xmas maybe?) and I do believe that it came with the Data Transfer Cable.

When my old xbox died, I bought myself the black Elite one which already had a 120gig HD, but it didn't come with the cable needed. You can call up microsoft, they'll give you a link to a form you can print and fill out then you fax it to them and they send you the cord for free.

If you're good with computers, you might also consider buying a regular 120Gb laptop hard drive and firmware-updating it for XBox 360 use. Screw Microsoft charging $150 for a 120Gb hard drive.

It involves buying a 2 1/2" hard drive like the Western Digital BEVS, booting into command prompt, flashing it with firmware, then using a utility to copy your files from the old drive to the new. You have to be careful during a few of the steps, but it really wasn't that bad after I did all the research. This was a few months ago and my flashed HD is still working like a champ. There's a wealth of information about it you can find through Google.

This intrigues me, but not enough to break my warranty. By doing this, will I leave any evidence of tampering in case of a RROD?

Just put your old HDD in when you send it off then.

  • saint2esaint2e Registered User regular
Well, actually you don't send your HDD in when you send it to them for RROD. I'm just concerned you'd have to crack the case to do what Toastie Toast is proposing.

Nah, I don't think you have to. At least my roommate didn't have a problem when he sent his in for RROD.

You have to crack the case on the hard drive, but not the Xbox. I would advise against it, though, because you may have trouble playing OXB games and even if they supposedly can't detect it now, with Live firmware updates, you never know when MS will develop something that can detect it and ban your console from Live.

You just have to detach the HD, and lift a small sticker to reveal a screw. It's quite easy. The hard part is the flashing and copying.

I play OXB games on it just fine. You just have to copy all the partitions (I believe partition 2 is what you need for OXB games).

And I'm pretty sure you won't have to worry about MS banning you. This has been going on for years and they haven't done anything about it. You're not duplicating your Console ID by downloading and flashing the HD firmware. You're just duplicating a HD hardware ID. I doubt they'd make the effort to detect and ban hard drive IDs for a small segment of the DIY population.

I would rather not take the risk. I traded in my 20GB for a 120GB, they swapped the data there in the shop, and it cost me thirty quid.

Well, I don't know how you got that deal, but the OP did say the new drive would cost $160 for him. I got my HD for $40, and it was the best thing I did for my 360. I'm glad I did it and saved 100+ bucks.

It was a preowned Elite HDD, and I traded in my 20GB toward it. OP, it's worth remembering that you can sell on your old 20GB (I'm assuming, since they don't make a 40GB) after the transfer to recoup some of the money.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it craps out if it detects a hard drive larger than 120 GB. I think some of the hackery they apply can fool the 360 into seeing a larger hard drive as a 120, but you won't get more than 120 GB of space out of it.

I should really get someone to do this for me, because every time I consider buying a larger hard drive (I have a refurbed 20 GB that came with a controller) the price just fills me with rage and I don't have any DLC or XBLA games as a result. And now I'm angry again. What the hell is wrong with Microsoft?

  • Toastie ToastToastie Toast Registered User
Seriously... it's just a plastic casing around a standard HD and they mark it up 400%. Fuck that.

Anyway, yeah, it only detects up to 120Gb because you're basically flashing the HD with the firmware from an official MS 120Gb drive.

Regardless, the 120 gig HD comes with the transfer cable and disc. I just got one myself.

About the cord and file transfer...wow, I did not know this. Thank you.

Also, I can not vouche for site's reputation or hidden fees but...
    $85.46 at vpgames.com
And this seems like a good site, even comes with a video of them putting it in the box...$89.99 at netdirectbargains.com.

Also. DIY and people that like buying from store. Don't fight. It's like telling a cowboy to stop killing buffalo and an indian to shoot a gun.

  • Toastie ToastToastie Toast Registered User
    We're not fighting. And that's a terrible analogy :-P

I'm just presenting a second option. I'd actually recommend the official HD for most people, but I myself refuse to pay that price, and I like tinkering with stuff.

Anyway, if you get the official 120Gb HD, remember that you can sell the data transfer kit that comes with it too. They go for about $20 on eBay.

    Yeah, that's good then.

I think it's pretty awesome, messing with things such as HDs, controller, and 360 case mods.

Also, I seen on llamma a really quick, cheap, and almost sleek way to add your media to your 360, such as music and videos, but you cannot add DLC/marketplace content to the drive in this method.

The data transfer thingies actually look pretty cool. I have a laptop as a part of my entertainment centre, and a spare enclosure+HD I could hook up to it... Hrrm....

If you buy it new, it does. If you don't, or you mod it in, you have to request one from MS.

He's talking about buying it at retail in the OP. Why confuse the issue? It comes with the cord. End of story.

CEX. I had the cable myself and they were kind enough to do the transfer - took about an hour and a half. The hardest part was catching them when they had a 120GB in.

They sell them for £48 and give £16 tradein for a 20GB right now, so you essentially get 100GB for £32. You can also make a couple of quid back by selling the cable on eBay, but I've kept it for some reason. Actually, if you want it (or anyone else in the UK), I'll send it over no problem, as long as you pay it forward to someone else who needs it.

If you have a 60GB one, it's worth £23 on trade-in, so that's an extra 60GB for £25. The Nottingham store actually has four in stock if you want to go ahead and do it.

I've only got a 20GB drive, but cheers for the tip, may head down; been meaning to buy a phone from there soon too :)

In that case, you might not need to get them to do the transfer in-store. Buy the 120GB, do the transfer at home, and trade in your old 20GB against the phone.

If you want the cable PM me your address.
