My favourite part about Civ4 is that it takes some time for new cities to actually turn a profit, so city spamming doesn't work. Good city placement is more important than working every tile on the map.

damnit, why didn't anyone tell me this.
i have ocd for working every single tile.
It is a very hard to notice tutorial, but one day I realized there is no way you are supposed to know how this game works by reading the civpedia as you play.
Actually, I don't remember much about the tutorial. I'll go play it right now!
edit: Er, where IS the tutorial? Do you have to start Civ4 Vanilla to play the tutorial?
I updated Beyond the Sword to the latest patch, but it doesn't look like Civ4 vanilla was updated.
Which means I still need the disc to start it.
The disc that is packed in some box with the rest of my stuff for when I'm moving tomorrow.

I was able to play as far as king with this strategy. I thought I was pretty badass.
I bought Civ III and Civ IV, but even combined I never played them as much as Civ II.
Thank a ton dude.
Now I want to play a Pokemon Tactics game.
I only ever win by rushing for a conquest victory before about 1200.

no disc required
Rane: I think you have to start vanilla civ4, and then poke around in the menu a bit. Under advanced, maybe?
Say, does the latest vanilla patch remove the cd check, or is that just for BtS?
Theres a way to start a regular game and you can opt to play a "Learn as you play" type of game, something like that.
Not a custom game, something go figure it out.
Hell yeah
but they just did real barebones basics
they didn't explain how to properly operate cities or whatever
If people are not starving or living in filth or mad about overpopulation: build things
If people are living in filth: harbors, get more farms and that good shit.
If people are bitching of overpopulation: It is crucial you are running a police state, atleast I think it is police state.
When they get angry all you have to do is:
Open the city management screen
There is a button around the bottom right corner
it says DRAFT
Click that button
Done.
Just don't do it too often, let them finish being angry about it before you do it again
This works well with cities with a lot of food, and you should have a granary too so you can regrow faster
