Half-Life 2 (PC) Graphic Issues: Please Help

  • Professor+Snugglesworth
Out of the blue, I've been having some weird graphical errors with Half Life 2 and all mods that use it.

On the whole, the game is very dark, even with the brightness turned up. It isn't a contrast issue as it's more like it's missing fonts or colors.

In addition to that, things look....well, like something out of Earthbound. I assure you I did not install an Earthbound mod, but take a look.
    Spoiler:

All other Steam games (TF2, L4D) work fine, as do other non-Steam games. I tried to uninstall the game through Steam, but that didn't do the trick. Is there a way to completely uninstall it and start over, or could the problem lay elsewhere?

    Please help me out.

    Oh my god.

Don't get too excited, all other shots are just blacked-out and missing textures.

Wow that's something. Since it's just this game I'd try completely uninstalling through windows instead of through steam. If that doesn't work, try reinstalling (or upgrading) your video drivers. If that doesn't work, well... call an exorcist? I can't imagine another reason why HL2 would do that while TF2, L4D etc worked fine. Maybe someone else can be of more help.

    Trippy. Verify your game cache?

Problem was solved. Updated my graphics driver, and everything is fine now.

Is there a way to have my drivers automatically updated, or some sort of way I can be notified that an update is available?

Not that I'm aware of. But in my own experience, I've found that updating video drivers every time a new version comes out can lead to more problems than good. They never seem to completely uninstall for me, and generally new versions won't give you much more performance on a release-to-release basis. I install new drivers when I have a problem, or usually once every 6 months regardless.

I should probably submit my pictures to this blog.
