DS Lite is pretty much the best option if you care about GBA stuff (and you should)

It has the benefit over the original DS of not causing you to list to one side when you carry it around

I'm heading to Hawaii in a few days and I was wondering what would be an alright game to pick up to keep me entertained on my plane ride over.

As of now I have: Chrono Trigger, Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Bros., The World Ends With You, GTA: Chinatown Wars, and Rhythm Heaven.

I was leaning towards getting Flower, Sun, and Rain because I liked Suda 51's other games, but I haven't heard much about it.

it is both very good and will definitely last long enough to cover the first flight

(I cannot guarantee you will not obsessively play through it all before the flight back)

I remember buying it when the gba port was just released in 07'. A lot of portable games are difficult to find in stores if you're looking for them beyond their initial release cycle unfortunately.

Hey guys I love me some DS games, yet I do not actually have one myself. Should I pick up a DSlite, an older DS, or just save my money for a DSi? I should mention playing GBA games is pretty important to me, as is battery life. Is there a big difference in battery life between the various models?

If GBA games are important, then don't get a DSi. Can't say about battery life, but the lite's screen is so much clearer and brighter than the fatty's.

I would say if you want to travel and play GBA games get a DS lite.

If you say only want to bust them out occasionally when you are at home just keep your GBA (because that plays original GB games too!) and get a DSi.

Unless you have access to the internet (or a guide) if you get stupidly stuck it may not be a good plane flight.

There is nothing more annoying in that game is to know exactly what is the contracdiction but the game is not letting you go forward because are presenting the right evidence to the wrong statement or vice versa.

  • AirAir Registered User regular
so you are saying its a terrible game and we should all save ourselves the effort of trying to deal with its bullshit

hey whats advantages of a dsi?
anything really or just new size?
    how much different size?

    darjeelingshortsig95.jpg
  • Blake TBlake T Registered User regular
No I like Phoenix Wright quite a bit, like I said though some of the frustrating moments in the game is you know what the contradiction is but the game needs you present the right evidence at the right time in order to proceed and at that time it is frustrating.

It would be good on a plane (I think) if you get stuck because you really can't go any further.

DSi is smaller has a camera and you can download games.

It also doesn't have a GBA slot.

I think they improved the battery life with it as well.

  • Airking850Airking850 Registered User regular
Phoenix Wright, for being my favorite series of the past few years, does have a ton of potentially plane-ruining bullshit

Dragon Quest V is excellent, as is Henry Hatsworth. Also, Kirby: Canvas Curse is still one of the best DS games and doesn't get enough love these days.

Also SD/SDHC card support and .m4a audio playback and manipulation (speed, pitch, various filters). I use a 16GB SDHC card with all of my music and now I don't need a new mp3 player.

That said, if you have an iphone or something and can get a guide for phoenix wright in there or something I would totally recommend getting the game.

Dragon Quest would be an excellent game for a plane flight

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow would also be a great way to spend a plane ride (the other Castlevanias are good too but not quite as good)

I don't typically like JRPG's or turn based RPG's that much, but when Golden Sun game out I couldn't put the damn thing down. I haven't really sat down and tried to find another that caught me as well as Golden Sun did, mostly because I'm still quite unsure as to why Golden Sun was so fantastic.
With that, is there any games out there that are enough like Golden Sun that when played you go "Oh, hey, this is like Golden Sun".

How are the Dragon Quest games? I've always kinda thought to be pretty much Final Fantasy games, a series I honestly cannot stand to play personally, but haven't actually seen more then a few bits of it here and there.

Well the third Golden Sun is in the works for DS.

I'm not a final fantasy fan.

The Dragon Quest games are just plain fun. Fairly easy - there is some grinding, but the controls are simple, and sometimes I'd be posting on here or going to the bathroom at the same time as levelling up in the game, so it's really quite bearable. The stories are captivating; nothing too complex, but you do get quite involved in your character. I especially liked Dragon Quest 5's story. The music is cheesy but doesn't grow irritating, and the monsters are just goshdarn adorable.

Honestly, I'm really not a JRPG fan at all, and yet DQ 4/5 were keeping me up until 2-3 am even on work nights.

Each game lasted me 22-25 hours, so they're not overly long. DQ4 is unusual in that you don't play your hero character until chapter 5 - before then you spend each chapter playing one of the hero's future companions. It's a really good way to get a feel for your party members.

DQ5 sees you taking your hero from the age of about 8 to the age of 28, with marriage and kids along the way. It has a very epic feeling.

That actually sounds pretty cool. I might go pick up one of them tomorrow. Would you recommend one of them over the other for a first time person into the series?

I played 5 first and I think it is probably my favourite, although the margin between the two is narrow. I'm just a real sucker for taking a hero character from a child to an adult and really feeling that you're growing powerful along the way (I also loved the Baldur's Gate series for this same reason). Also, it has a neat little twist that I liked that I won't tell you lest it spoil your experience.

Both games, although part of a trilogy, are stand-alone, and playing 5 first in no way spoils you for 4. So I'd recommend you play 5 first. :)

    So the plot thickens:

My roomie has an old DS she is willing to lend me, as long as I don't take it out and take good care of it. Now, I want to play me quite a few GBA games, but this does complicate things. Should I go with DS lite or a DSi/old DS combo?

    tQCnY.giftom_sig2.jpg
  • Dee KaeDee Kae Registered User regular
Just keep the old DS. I still have mine, since I don't desire a DS lite or DSi in the slightest. (They are so freaking tiny.)

Man, not to sound like a bastard, but I think that if you can't handle Phoenix Wright without a guide, that sucks. I mean, even in the cases where there's an obvious flaw in the logic and it's more about trying to do what the game wants you to do, you just save and then keep playing around until you figure it out.

Maybe I'm just inured to it from playing stacks and stacks of 2d adventure games, but damn. Compared to some of those, Phoenix Wright is not even remotely difficult. There are only so many pieces of evidence and/or courses of action that you can take.

I played IV and eventually got bored with it, but that sounds pretty damn cool.

Suddenly I'm on this old school hard-as-nails RPG kick. Etrian Odyssey, Dark Spire, Shiren the Wanderer?

    It's like I hate myself.

No see that's just blatant boredem 12 pieces of evidence plus multiple profiles and eight statements to go through. It's not a matter of being imune it's about not putting up with shit. I've forced answers through before like that in Phoenix wright and it is not fun and makes me not want to play the game.

  • TayaTaya Happy ___ Day Registered User regular
There was one part where I had to use a guide in Phoenix Wright. There's a part in case 5 where you have to press two statements and then go back a press a previous statement, or something. I've been stumped a few other times but it doesn't usually take too long to figure something out.
