I love this game so much, got into the beta thanks to the thread on these forums and played the hell out of it. I'll be patching it up and making a new massgate account to nuke some stuff.
Best thing to do when you start out is to not join VENOM public servers. The admins on those are the worst in the game and will usually kick you if you are either better than them, do something they don't agree with or are a new player. Also, Spaceneedle only Servers usually have strict rules as those are the servers all the #1 leaderboard players visit to "legitimately" pad their score and stay on top. If you're any decent though it's quite funny following those players around and messing up their game from the opposite team as the only thing they're good at is pointwhoring.
The most important thing you have to remember about this game is that it is a team game, if you don't play as a team you will not get far and this can be quite hard for newer players. The WiC community is very unforgiving regarding new players and you may get kicked off a server for making mistakes or not playing like the pubstars want you to.
This Thread on the official Forums can help you a lot when you start out. As a general rule though, don't spawn 2 Heavy Arties and sit in the back with them. Don't blob your units, be it infantry, support or armor. Spread your units for better efficiency. The only exclusion to that rule is Air where you should always focus on one unit (4 Heavy Air + 1 Scout or 6 Medium Air) and keep them together as one.
Like I said earlier, WiC is a team game so if you join a pub make sure you do it together with a friend and play together with him/her, this will make the time you play a lot more fun and you'll be that much more effective. Also, there are certain servers that are unranked, which means you don't get points added to your profile or leaderboard score. Those servers are usually Matchmode Servers, it's ok to join those but if you're new it's best if you spec as the people who play on those servers are generally clanplayers who enjoy playing with or against some of the best players that are still around. If you spec a few games you can learn quite a lot and should get to know some of the better players who like to offer help to newer players.
I should install this game again if we've got enough of us playing. World in Conflict is one of my all time favorite RTS games. More should be like it. Fuck base building and resource gathering - give us troops and a role online and let us go to town on the enemy.

I tried a bit of WiC online a little while back. To be honest, I got kind of bored with it. It might be that I was just playing random matchups (and usually getting rolled), but it largely seemed to come down to who hard countered who in a given encounter, at which point whole squads tend to get wiped before they can react. Also, dropping constant air raids and things on capture points.
Matchups between two groups of the same doctrine tend to be a bit more even and interesting, but those are a small part of the larger game.
It could just be that I was playing with random internet dudes and there was no real co-ordination happening between anyone, it just seemed like a cluster of sweary jerks all running off doing their own thing in different parts of the map and raging against the N00B (and I didn't even take artillery once, just like everyone said, I tried to stick with an AA role. I'm pretty certain I was taking out a lot of helicopters, but then, that means you're not somewhere else assisting someone else whose need is clearly greater). So that might be the reason. I presume the game's better when you're coordinating with people you know? How does that play out?
EDIT: Also, how can the op reference the awesome trailer and not link to it and a few others?
EDIT EDIT: Although after a false start, I did get into and enjoy the SP campaign. One questin though, there's quite a few trailers with CG cutscenes in them, for both WiC and Soviet Assault, and yet the only CG cutscene that's actually in the game is the NYC one. Anyone know why that is? Did I just miss the rest somehow?

Yeah, when you co-ordinate as a team it's really interesting and fun. Each person plays a different role, after all, be it infantry or air of armor or support. It's just the joy of good communication, working together and achieving victory and results. I absolutely love the role setup because of this. It forces you to actually work together to win.

so did they ever fix the balance in this game?
I remember I bought it at launch and felt the balance between the roles was perfect but whiners complained so they nerfed one of the roles. Then when whiners complained, they nerfed another role instead, and continued round-robin until everything beat air role and air role beat nothing, then I stopped playing.

Heavy Air got nerfed pretty badly in patch 10 to the point where most people played with medium Air only and Matches got boring as hell. Then Massive held a BETA patch and invited everyone to participate. Since Patch 11 Heavy Air is back to its old glory while at the same time keeping Medium Air as a good balanced counter which makes my life as Support player quite a hard one as double Air strats seem to be the most common in 5on5 matches nowadays.

WIC has one of the biggest douche bag communities in gaming. I don't really know why because the game really isn't THAT complex. Maybe that's the reason. They want to seem more important than they actually are.
Is it true that all faction units are completely identical? Like, an M1 Abrams has the same stats as a T80? I read that somewhere and lost all interest.
Well it's just USA vs USSR, but yeah basically units are the same.
But it's a well-balanced game that all the abilities and tactical aid really makes it diverse and playing different Roles is great.
This has probably already been explained, but it is kind of annoying. I mean, I can completely understand why--WiC is very much a twitch game, and twitch games require balance in order to have maximum twitch. It does detract though, sometimes.
The BMP-2 should be amphibious, because, well, it was, but that would screw the USA and NATO over since their amphibious transports would suck by comparison.
The M1 tank should probably be somewhat tougher, but also slower, something that would screw over the USSR and NATO.
Basically, without the balancing measures taken, the NATO faction would get screwed in some regards.

Yeah it's probably best it didn't see light of day on consoles, but it's still sad to see a good game not get some more exposure.

Resident 8bitdo expert.
Resident hybrid/flap cover expert.
I tried to join the clan, but the in-game thingy only let me create a new one.
Anyways, I'll be out of town and away from my PC until Saturday
We can play after that.

We need to drop nukes on each other soon! Bah I love this game but I forgot how much I suck at infantry.
And you know it doesn't help when your team can't provide AA.
I figured as much, whenever you can.
