Bridge to Terebithia
Basically, kids make up imaginary world in forest. But to get to the forest they have to cross a river(which they do via rope). They get into shenanigans and become best friends. Then one day he goes off alone with a teacher on a little field trip, only to find out his best friend drowned while trying to cross said river and having the rope break on her. Which is only made worse when you consider she seemed depressed that she wasn't invited to come along too.
