D&D 4E Recruitment: only one spot free, apply anyway

Hey duders. So I ran The Halls Of Tizun Thane as a PbP game here from January to July and am just about ready for a sequel. However, only five of my original players will be continuing, leaving the sixth spot free for a new player. Here's what I'd like prospective members of this merry band to do.

Your sheet will be on mythweavers, and you'll start at level 3. Magic items and gold should be taken in amounts appropriate for that level (check the PHB for details). For your application I want you to narrate an IC meeting of your character with the party (details of whom below) in whatever circumstance you like. Are they rescuing him from bandits? Breaking her out of an orc jail? Propositioning him for some lovin'? Asking her the time?

What else? The campaign is in a generic D&D setting. It is a PbP game. I frown on D&DI exclusive stuff. And your post had better be great if you're applying with a drow. If you want to know what kind of game I run, check out the Tizun Thane thread here. A nice moment occurs here and here

Oh, and applications will close when I feel like closing them. Probably Friday evening UK (civilised) time.

The party so far consists of:

Lucan Loreweaver (Anarchy) - eladrin wizard.
Dain (Streever) - dwarf ranger sheet.
Makar (Jam Warrior) - dragonborn paladin.
Anwar Senafalli (tastydonuts) - half-elf sorcerer.
Duragon (Dac) - dragonborn cleric.

Just to check, is this PbP or Maptools? I may just be being blind, it's been known. Also, are you looking for a defender, leader, striker or any of those three?

You could check the previous game I linked to! Or I could edit the OP to include what kind of game it is, I guess.

And I have no preference for classes. It's up to the applicants to decide what would fit best into the existing party. Or whether you should care. After all, your paladin is much better than him.

I also realised I was a reserve in the previous game, so I probably should have know that!

    Yes, they're fine.

Any and all restrictions are already in the OP. Unless I think of some new ones that aren't and your beloved warforged homage to C3PO brings them to light..

Ukret, Bugbear Rogue, Ruthless Ruffian build

    Appearance:
    1z2dr7s.jpg
    Background:
The group couldn't believe their ears. Ukret smiles a toothy grin, spits in his hand, and slicks back his dirty mane of hair. "Why, I'm coming with you, of course."

The group looks visibly shocked and began murmuring their discontent with this revelation.

Ukret snorts. "You owe me! You think my clan would have just let you go own your way after you blundered into the sacred festival like that? The only reason you're still breathing is because I volunteered to escort you out of the clan-lands. My father dislikes my 'spunk' and is disappointed that I don't want to take my place as ruler of some squatter's huts. I'm sure he's glad I'll be 'getting adventuring out of my system'."

The rogue shifts his massive mace to his other shoulder and grunted. "You ladies ready, or we gonna talk all day?" Without waiting for an answer, the bugbear begins brushing aside branches along the forest trail back into town.

This thread isn't getting the love it deserves, so here's my update (and bump) for now.

Working on a 199 year old gnome crossbowman (artificer) who has been on a 20 year holiday, needing to re-polish his skills as the money has run out.

All worked out for stats/powers but no idea what to do for feats beyond the obvious (and dull) Weapon Focus/Expertise. Maybe Skill Focus (History). Should be all done before the arbitrary deadline in the OP.

Edit: Mythweavers Sheet - needs a bit of filling out. Background and such tomorrow before the arbitrary.

    Sheet: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=149796

    IC Post:
"I am no undead fiend. Stay your blades."

The group eyed Tomas with distrust, and he admitted to himself that he could hardly blame them. His silver eyes shone from a pallid face and more than one town had turned him away, believing him to be a monstrosity that could endanger the residents. A recent rejection had led him to seek a campsite off the main road, but even here misfortune had dogged his every move as he came across this band of adventurers.

"I have no violent intentions to any of you. I seek only a place to stay for the night where I might rest."

He saw their blades lower, although mistrust still shone in their eyes. Tomas released the breath he had been holding. Setting up his camp, he considered his options. Perhaps he should ask if he could follow them into the next town; his supplies were running low and the legitimacy of an adventuring company could provide him the access he needed.

Perhaps he could even find redemption.

    Meeting the Party
The party could hear the goblins screaming up the path ahead. As they moved into formation on either side of the road they saw the goblin band break from the treeline. From a distance it looked as though they were under attack from an unknown assailant from behind, the sound of unseen arrows whistling through the air could be heard. Every ten steps or so a goblin would stumble and fall never to rise again. What started as a group of about eight goblins, became seven, then six, and so on; dwindling to two.

As the goblins came closer to the party, they could clearly make out a voice yelling in a mix of broken goblin and common curse words, harrying the goblins. Just before the party was about to step out and ambush them, the goblin further back hurled a dagger at the goblin in front. The blade of the dagger became a spinning spark of light as it pierced the back of the lead goblin, rebounding upwards into the air and returning to the hand of its owner.

"Hail good sirs," said the small green figure in the same voice they heard before.

Now less than 15 yards away, they could easily see that the rear goblin that had been yelling the whole time was no goblin at all. A male gnome, head shaved and painted green had been running alongside the goblins picking them off from behind while shouting in goblin that some supernatural spirit was upon them.

"I hope the village sent you guys to help me bring down the rest of these goblin scum. This is my third batch that I've led to death, I can't run anymore!"
    Mechanics
Used bluff/diplomacy check to blend in with goblin minions and warn them of incoming danger
Used bluff/Ghost Sound (racial) to get goblin minions to run
Used Jinxed Shot at-will to down goblin minions

I'm currently in one PbP game ("Monster Party").

I respectfully submit Lerissa Harkmoon, Tiefling Resourceful Warlord:

    Background:
Larissa is the second child of the Harkmoon family, a fairly well-off trading company. As the second child, she was not expected to take over the family's business, and honestly that suited her fine. Instead, her family decided to use her more natural skills and trained her as a bodyguard for their caravans, reasoning that they could save some money on hiring perhaps less trustful guards. It wasn't long until Larissa was training and hiring guards herself. All of that changed after one of her caravans was viciously attacked by a band of marauding orcs, wiping out her guards and severely wounding Larissa herself - she likely would have died herself had a party of adventurers not come across her and drove off the orcs. Once brought into town and healed, she resolved to train harder and stronger, pitting herself against stronger foes to improve herself. Larissa has taken up the mantle of an adventurer to do so, accompanying the adventuring party that saved her, with the obligation to her family weighing heavily on her shoulders.

I've not used Mythweavers before, so I'm not sure how to auto-fill in all the powers and such. Help would be appreciated (since there's no help file on the site itself). Until then, here's a CB file:

    Meeting the party:
Larissa groaned. The attack had come upon them with little warning. One moment it was quiet; the next, howling, barbaric orcs had emerged from the treeline and fell upon the caravan. Her men, men she had personally trained, were falling like wheat. The orcs were led by by a shaman dripping in hides and totems - with his magic her warriors were simply outclassed. She herself had fought, but was laid low by a lucky blow.

Larissa spied dust on the horizon, a cloud swiftly approaching. More orcs? No- an odd party of travelers! Larissa watched with gratitude and admiration, as the new party of adventurers set about extracting vengeance on the orcs. She noted, in particular, the style of the sorcerer as he flung his devastating magic, the collected calm of the eladrin wizard, and the viciousness and brutality of the dwarf's axes and the dragonborn's hammer (and his unshakable, and loud, faith in Kord). Even the cleric seemed to get into it. But Larissa, with her trained eye, could see they could use some lessons in working together to really maximize their efficiency in battle.

The orc shaman, finally over the initial shock of having a band of adventurers cleave into his warparty, raised his staff high. Sickening words of power rolled off his tongue, immobilizing the adventurers in place. Larissa felt sick as the shaman grinned and strolled forward, minions close behind, to finish them off. She could not let that happen! With her final ounce of strength, she summoned her abilities to shout one last word - "Release!" With that, her eyes rolled up into her head and she faded into blackness.

Thus, she was unable to see the effect of her word - the adventurers spontaneously busting to life like animated statues. The shaman barely had time to scream before he was pierced by a missile of magic, chopped in twain by axes, and had his body engulfed by a bolt of pure chaos. The hammer swinging down on his head crushed it like a jar of jelly. The remaining orcs, stunned at this pure display of viciousness, fled, only to be picked off as they ran. The adventuring party then turned to thank their mysterious benefactor, but Larissa was not conscious to receive them.

Also, currently not in any games.

    Melf Menecci, Gnome Artificer

    Description:
Melf is an elderly gnome of average height and build, his face covered with laugh lines. He usually gets around in simple leather armor that once might have looked quite grand when freshly lacquered, but now just looks well-worn in. At his side is a correctly maintained hand crossbow that has been heavily customised for comfort and quick handling. The ivory handle bears the royal mark of Cellentine, inlaid in gold.

The gnome keeps his hair trimmed short in the military fashion, averting the usual `hat hair' common to those of his race. His thin eyes are not hostile, but reveal little about him; he has the hard look that is not uncommon among those who have seen serious combat.

    IC Meeting:

"What you see is what I've got, fellas. Genuine antique gear that would've been handed down for generations if I hadn't stashed it ninety years ago. Special orders by request."

In the dim back room of the tavern, an old gnome with close-cropped grey hair gestures to a rough blanket stretched across a table, covered with a wide variety of weapons, clothing and knick-knacks. He inspects the adventurers carefully, perhaps judging their ability to pay, or maybe in his life he's learned to be careful at all times.

Holding up an unusually rough looking orb, the dwarf, Dain, considers the assorted goods that the wiry old gnome has on offer. "Not that I'm sayin' you're a thief, but how did a gnome like you get all this fancy gear?", he asks, in what he thinks is an innocent manner.

"Spoils of war, boyo", says the gnome easily, his eyes narrowing a little in response to Dain's almost-accusation. "More than 100 years served in assorted regiments and militias, most of 'em on the winning side, of course, on account of my bein' a particularly careful prick when it comes to things like not gettin' my head cut off by hobgoblins, burnt off by a dragon, or stuck on a pole by the enemy."

Taking a moment from posing with a particularly handsome oak wand with maple inlay, Anwar can't help but be impressed, not so much by the power, but by the universal taste & quality of the goods on offer; the gnome clearly has a discerning eye. "And why are you selling them now, after ninety years?"

With a bashful smile, the gnome replies. "The short answer is that I ran out of cash. Tends to happen when you live a life of leisure for thirty years; I have to admit I thought I'd be dead by now, but here we are."

Raising an eyebrow at the concept of a thirty-year holiday, Duragon can't help but interject. "Thirty years? You really haven't done anything to earn money for thirty years? Are you serious?"

Chuckling a little, the gnome nods "Certainly am, boyo. Back in the day, I headed up King Beaussen's personal guard for about six years; until he died of course. There's good money in maintaining wards and such, but it'd bore the eyes off a gorgon to do for any real length of time."

Quiet until now, Lucan considers the gnome's tale, prompting a rather important question. "I didn't hear the landlord say before we came in; what was your name again, good gnome?"

"Melf Menecci is my name, of the Deadhills Menecci.", replies the gnome readily. "Former member of the Redmist Skirmishers, the Third Arm of Elrath, the 2nd 5th Ensten Rangers Corps, the Freemen of Montfellig, the 1st through 6th Ducal Regiments of Tissond, the King's Militia of Cellentine and appointed Royal Protector by his majesty, King Beaussen of Cellentine, deceased."

There is a brief silence as the adventurer's mentally work through the full resume offered, considering the skills that the old gnome must have built up over his lifetime, and the tricks, strategies and pure rat cunning that he must have at his disposal.

With a winning smile, the gnome breaks the silence. "You can call me Melf."

Okay, so I couldn't find any background or personality on Duragon, but this guy should fit in well with the rest of the party.

    Daniel Dragonfriend, Human Fighter

    Background:
Dan's father was a traveling merchantman, moving from village to village selling weapons and armor. He was beset by bandits while returning to a remote village of dragonborn to honor a contract with the village's elder. He fell, but drew the attention of the village guards, who slew the bandits. The village elder raised Dan as his own son. Dan grew to be great friends with his foster brother Rhogar, a dragonborn ranger who loved the forest. At eighteen the two left the village to seek honor and glory as adventurers.

They found it, ridding towns of bandit threats and cleansing a graveyard of undead horrors. It was in the graveyard that Rhogar fell, his life drained by a pale spectre. Dan and the rest of the party were able to press forward and slay the wizard that was raising the undead, and Dan's companions did their best to comfort him, offering him Rhogar's share of the gold. He refused and left the group, making the long journey home to tell his foster father of his son's passing. Dan felt responsible for Rhogar's death and left the elder with a false impression of a failure on Dan's part. Life in the village was awkward and stilted, and he left once more. This time Dan seeks only to make a living, believing himself unworthy of saga and song. His unsure shyness and lack of confidence make it hard to be accepted into an adventuring group, and he feels all the more keenly the absence of his brash and bold friend.

    Description:
Huge and muscled, Dan's appearance contrasts sharply with his demeanor. He looks like a thug, someone to be avoided or put down. A long scar runs down the left side of his face, giving him a harsh countenance, and many more scars hide beneath his armor. Only Dan's eyes show his cautious insecurity.

    IC Meeting:
The returning adventurers were the heart of the inn that night, telling stories and jokes for the whole bar to hear. As the night wore on, most of the other patrons headed home to their beds, but Dan stayed, setting coin after precious coin on the bar to keep his glass full.
Stop being so useless. You need this. With a grunt, Dan stood up from his stool. He hesitantly approached the group, walking slowly up to the center table. The half-elf spotted him first. Mistaking his intent, the sorcerer hefted a large staff.
"Looking for trouble, friend?" he asked, the note of warning in his voice unmistakable.
"Err, no... Ah... nevermind. Enjoy your evening." The human turned and made as if to head back to his seat at the bar.
"Well hold on a minute there. No reason to be rude, take a seat! " boomed one of the dragonborn.
Grinning nervously, Dan pulled up a chair. One of the adventurers was in the middle of a tale, so he said little at first, but as the night wore on, he began to open up a little. Eventually he found himself telling a group of strangers his personal history.
"So, you see, when I heard the tales of your success... and two of you are dragonborn..." Even after consuming enough ale to float a small ship, Dan couldn't get his question out.
"You seek to join us." It wasn't a question.
"Well, I mean... uh... it wouldn't have to be permanent. We could part company if it didn't work out?"
Makar couldn't contain himself; he burst out laughing. Red-faced, Dan began to stand up, clearly offended.
"No, sit down. I wasn't laughing at you - not in the way you think. It's just that you're so big, and so timid. Of course you can travel with us - the more the merrier!"
With a sigh of relief, Dan gestured for another round.

I have been deliberating (which may have looked a lot like someone watching Miami Vice to the casual observer) and have come to a momentous decision.

I have gone for the submission whose IC post that gave me the best sense of their character, although I really liked several of them, and will of course note down names of others as backup chars in case someone gets hit by a bus.

So, the guy joining the new Tizun Thane adventure will be Hayasa, and his gnome artificer, Melf Menecci. Thanks to everyone for their thoughtful submissions.

The adventure will be starting this week, and I'll be pm'ing everyone to let them know when the thread is up. Cheers all.
