Herro people. I just got my NEW intuos today. I got the 3 because i got it cheap and I didnt want to wait for the 4 to come into the store but I did have a look at a shinny new one and it looked pretty darn good. Anywho.. As i posted earlier in the doodle thread here is another study I have done to help me get rendering and basic brush work down pat.

Also.. Now I have an Intuos I am selling my Wacom Graphire. Im not after much as I just simply wont use it anymore so make me an offer and I might give it to you for it.

anywayy.. enough dabling.. here it is *NSFW*

The rendering of her left eye (the whole left side of her face, actually) looks really awesome to me. On her right though it looks like her eye isn't quite placed correctly and is popping out too much. I don't think it's in the wrong place, but it looks like it's tilted a different direction than her left eye.

edit: also her shoulders look uncomfortably placed. i don't think that angle would work for a pose

Xyzzy- I know exactally what you mean.. I noticed it early on and I kept working at that eye and i just couldnt get it. I decided to move on. I might come back to it:)

BTW. I think im in love with this intuos. Working has got even faster.. gahhh... I have been wanting to draw a cat all day so here is a 10 min sketch of one starting to turn it into a dragon. Not happy with it though coz everytihng looks stuck on so ill start again

The photo art is really really good, and I'd like to see some more finished peices, the lionbeast shows a bit of promise in the proportions and shading, but maybe something less ambiguous in what goes where

Legg you seem to have this uncanny ability to copy a photo quite well, but when it comes to actually drawing out shapes you still need a lot of practice. Get onto some of the Loomis books (the link is in the Q&D thread, 1st post) and do a bunch of the head studies found within, they'll help with your understanding of 3D shapes.

Also stay the fuck away from anime (at least for the time being) it'll only set you back by offering up easy answers to difficult questions.

Everyone's pretty much right about the anime. Just... don't. I did, and it's taken me years to recover, heh.

Photo refs I am... meh on. Photography doesn't really offer the same kind of quality that a real live model would. Not only for truer light, but also because you can't really see as many details in a photo. But I guess we all work with what we can get.

Some critiques on the original photo reference. Her nose is too short. Obviously, I haven't seen your reference, but I'm just telling you, it looks a little too short. Also, her left eye is too high. They're like, on a flat plane with each other even though her head is angled to the side. And they need to angle the same way. Also, the shadow of the nose looks a little odd. The problem is, it doesn't seem to be casting a shadow at all. And from where the lighting SEEMS to be coming from, I'm betting it would. And the shadow right at the "hard edge" of the nose will always be darker than the shadow it casts. (A pretty good example is this)

And then there's the fabric. It looks pretty much like it's floating in front of her. I see that you have rendered some folds, and they're not bad. But then, why is the strap on the left side of the piece just as bright as the strap on the right side? Doesn't her head cast a shadow over it? isn't it darker? And then, why the extremely dark shadow under the strap on the right side of the piece? It just doesn't really seem to belong there.

The breasts look kind of odd as well. They are not going at the same angle as the shoulders. The one on the right side of the piece is too high, I think, or those shoulders are just at the wrong angle. And, finally, the skin folds under her left (on the right side of the piece) armpit seem misplaced, and possibly, maybe, too dark. Just remember, too, that the breast connects to the arm, not breasts-to-the-chest-to-the-arm.

That fucker again! Everytime I make a comment along comes Picasso to disagree with me.

Seriously though, worrying about style while your still learning basics is ludicrous, it's like jamming your foot on the accelerator before you've learnt how to drive. I'm still not even close to being concerned about style, I just doo's what I likes right now. I seriously do think that technique determines 80% of most peoples style, the other 20% is concious.

Your attempt at anime looks like shit. Not because your skills are shit, but because generally 'most' anime is shit. (though there are a lot of freaking awesome anime/manga artists out there, my favorite being Akira Toriyama. Beautiful watercolour environments)

it doesn't look like you're "building the form." Instead of roughing things in you're just doing one thing at a time this is kind of apparent in the way that they eyes aren't even and that the face does't feel like it has 3 dimensions. (or, on a similar token, you're building the form but not makeing sure that you've built it correctly)

Yes.. I know your right but i dont know how to build form without drawing in the outlines/ construction lines and I always have soooo much trouble erasing them on paper. I just end up with a scribble of mess really... lol.. I dont know also how to check form without starting to add detail. I always find that i draw my circle and stuff for the face but then i start drawing the features and it pushes the circle/face out more. Like I cant scale my features into the face Im drawing... Ill work it out with more studies I think. I use a 2B pencil.. maybe I should try a H for my construction and then move on. Thats the main bennifit i see in computer drawing is you can erase so easily so it enables you to build things up. Start from the squares and circles and then flesh it out.

Well, even if those lines don't erase, the more you use them the more comfortable you'll be with what everything should look like.

Using lighter pencils is also a really good idea- again, even if you don't erase the lines, they'll be much harder to notice the lighter they are.

edit: let me put it this way. If you draw the form and get it right, the worst you have are a few lines going through it. You can fix that if you want. (via scanner and photoshop or erasure) If you don't draw the form you won't be able to fix the errors after you start the detail.

thankyou very much for the info. I found a 2H pencil and a HB pencil so I am doing some anatomy studies which I was just adviced to do. Im finding it allot easier, im starting drawing a page of eyes and with the 2H i am able to draw my circle guides and still erase them more so than what i could.

I went ahead and worked on my tiger/ dragon sketch. I am very keen as to what you guys think. This is probably one of the most amount of times Ive spent on a drawing 4 hours so far. Im really liking where it is going. I might adjust a few things later but feedback would be great LD

I really paid close attention to sharpness and colours in this drawing. I had allot of issues with the water and I dont think its right just yet.

Right now, the lighting seems to be your biggest issue with the tiger. With the main light source from behind (it seems like the sun is behind the wing, if that isn't correct then the lighting issue is lessened) you shouldn't be getting highlights on the complete opposite side (the tiger's legs). I also noticed that you darkened the spot between his eyes- that would be fine but I think its too dark and you lose the form because of it. The tiger seems flat there.

I don't have much else to say other than I really like the sky- it pleases me :)

That's because it's a photo, which I'm going to assume is just a temporary thing?

Try using some custom brushes for the water, it's a nasty bitch to get looking right.

The top one is a photo but Im still working on the sky in the bottom picture. Im turning clouds into mountains and such. I Really like where that is going and any idea about the custom brushes? shapes etc?

I keep ending up with water that looks like clouds because its generally just to soft...

Thanks for the advice so far guys. Ill add some reflection and colour to the water. I really wanted to move the sun to the side.. right side but it still looks like its coming from the back so I will fix that up a little.

The wings don't make any sense. I'm not sure how they're constructed, but more importantly, I'm not sure how they'd work. It looks like you've got some kind of pole that the wing skin is just hanging off of.

yeah someone at work noticed the wings dont look functional. I really wanted them to look cool and sort of cape-ish but they do need more form. Ill give them another shot tonight after work :) I was thinking something along the lines of feathers and maybe introducing some of the orange from the tiger into the wings

As i mentioned in the doodle thread, the tiger looks sweet. I think youre at a point where you 'can' do some cool work, but you really need to take it back to the planning stages. I think this would have looked cooler if you planned the composition, colour, background and even the content. Your final illustrations would benefit so much. I think thats the most important stage, other than the final rendering. Do loads of thumbnails and post them. See what people think is working best, and what is not. It looks cool, but it looks like you're jumping just a little ahead. Nice work. Your stuffs improving.

OKK. So i think ive done a Myk here and I am experimenting with textures of the wing. Im looking towards something like feathers/fur. Is this to textury ? Like I plan on toning it down maybe a little but I think im starting to like the look of the textures popping out of the drawing....

Im off to watch house then ill be back to draw some more lol

Loose the texture on the wings. The older one looks more convincing. This one does just look like random texture. Not at all life fur/feathers. I think you should draw as much as possible.

Example: found on google images. Not saying its a great picture, but the way the artist has handled it, makes it look convincing.

I think I prefer the cloak-like look of the wings, and I beleive that is just a placeholder texture

Some shading in there and some cultivating on the feathers could go far.

A sharper angle on those wings would look great aswell.
