I thought they seemed like nice people. I figured the old man was probably ready to die, and just spent his life in fear... so I should ease his pain.

You can't use any DLC without Windows Live. Saved games dependent on DLC are kaput without Windows Live. Windows Live owns your goddamn soul.

Ah, but that's only if you don't dig out the DLC files from where Windows Live downloaded them and put them in your data folder.

So I take it Point Lookout is basically that fucking creepy X-Files episode with the inbred monsters turned into a Fallout mission? If so, I'll take two.

I love the font they used in the trailer too - was waiting for the Mystery Machine to pop up.

Those having issues with Windows Live might want to take a gander at this Mod

I used to use an external app with similar functionality, the name escapes me at the moment (its on my old disconnected xp drive), and yes, you can indeed enjoy the game, mods, saves and DLC without Windows Live.

Fallout 2: I'm jumping in for the first time, having only played FO3. Any suggestions for a decent build? I'm probably going to start with a small guns specialist (or whatever its equivalent is), but I understand that the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats work a bit differently in this.

Sniper/Diplomat is really good. With sniper rifles in FO2 you can shoot people in the eyes and blind them, effectively taking them out of the fight. You can also cripple big bads after blinding them, making them easy meat.

Basically being able to talk to people is important. Just a heads up though, at the end of the game you fight a really bad motherfucker. Like, 10X harder then anything in FO3. Be ready for him.

    OK, to answer some confusion on this topic;

If you find that after some patch, or refusing some patch, or whatever, that your save files are missing, THEY ARE NOT ACTUALLY MISSING. They're just in a folder that's associated with your GFWL account. Moving them one folder up in the hierarchy will make them reappear in the game. The folder you're looking for is in My Documents/My Games/Fallout 3/*your GFWL account name*. Just move them up to the Fallout 3 folder, and you're peachy keen.

For anyone who has upgraded to 1.5 and broke all their mods, download Fallout Mod Manager, Fallout3Edit, and Fallout Mod Sorter, all from Fallout 3 Nexus. Put all of those into your Fallout 3/Data folder. Then, if you have DLC, go into the folder where GFWL stores it, which is Users/*username*/AppData/Local/Microsoft/XLive/DLC/4 25307d6/00000002 (note you'll have to enable "see hidden folders and files" in Windows to see these files). In this bizarrely named folder you'll find a bunch of more bizarrely named folders, each one of these containing a folder called "content". MOVE, NOT COPY everything in all the content folders into your Fallout 3/Data folder, leaving the content folders empty. Then run Fallout3Edit, with the -masterupdate switch. Then run Fallout Mod Manager, and tick all the mods you have that you want to run. Note that you must have all of the DLC ones ticked, as well as the base Fallout3 file. Don't worry about the load order. After you've done this, run Fallout Mod Sorter. FINALLY, run the game. Everything should work fine, except you won't get achievements or gamescore, but who gives a fuck.

Edit: A better written version of this info should probably go in the next OP, whoever's making it.

    SPECIAL:
IN is the most important stat... unless you plan to be a shoot first, ask questions later type of dude(or dudette) but you´ll miss out on a lot of cool conversations and XP. As apposed to F3 the PE stat in F2 is important, at least if you wanna be able to actually hit anything. ST is not that important if you plan on having some party members with who can lug around your stuff and you can get a car with a very spacious trunk later on. CH's most important function is determining how many NPCs you can have with you, so have at least 2 in that if you plan on having party member(s). I would recommend a CH of 6, so you can have 3 mule...er, party members.

    Traits:
The Gifted trait is so good, it's almost broken. +1 to all SPECIAL stats in exchange for a insignificant decrease to all skills? Fuck yes. Small Frame, Finesse and Fast Shot are also top-tier traits.

    Tag skills:
Small Guns obviously. Also Speech, Lockpick and Science are good choices.
Also note that tagged skills work a little different here than in F3. In F3 a tagged skills simply meant that you got a one time bonus to that skill at the start of the game. In F1/F2 the tagged skills get the one time bonus at the start plus a bonus every time you put points into that skill. In short, tagged skills will go up alot faster.

The key question with regard to stat allocation is: Do you intend to find all the skill books? With a checklist of them? (You can do this by being dilligent in just normal exploration/adventuring, for the most part)

If so, then an INT of 4 is all you will need to max out every skill by level 30. That allows you to pump up several other stats to 8 or so. By taking Almost Perfect at level 30 and waiting to go Bobblehead hunting until then, you can max out every skill and every stat.

EDIT: Oh, crap, Fallout 2. Disregard this advice! There aren't nearly as many books in FO2 as there are in FO3.

    Traits:

Take Gifted. This is a no-brainer.

The remaining choice is between Finesse, Small Frame and Fast Shot. I don't usually take Fast Shot because I like making called shots. I don't usually take Finesse because when you get the Sniper perk (and any reasonable gunslinging diplomat build will take that one) it's basically obsolete. That leaves Small Frame, which boils down to an extra attribute point (always welcome) at the cost of some carry weight...which hurts at the beginning, but since FO2 gives you the car and plenty of party members, really isn't that much of an issue.

I picked up the PC version of this, and downloaded the alternate background story mod. Game looks and runs amazing on PC.

Got a question and a problem, though.

Firstly, I'm pretty sure I saw a mod that replaces the greyish/white blur with a more realistic sky. Whats it called?

Second, is there any way to not have the game crash constantly? I don't really know whats causing it other than that it happens when I'm out in the wasteland. Had it go 45 minutes without a crash, but sometimes it just crashes constantly. As much as fallout 2 gets maligned for its buginess, it never crashed this much.

There are a number of people who seem afflicted with constant crashing, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. So people crash all the time, others rarely see one.

With Wasteland moods I recommend using the mod where it randomly cycles through them from time to time. I've had some seriously gorgeous fights where the fog rolls in close while hordes of super mutants are charging over a hilltop. Can't tell how many there are as they just keep on rolling in through the fog.

And a question about the Firelance. Is it a trail of smoke then explosion in the sky that drops it? Pretty sure I've missed it numerous times now.

It is limited, and finite in quantity. But there's a fair amount. I think the wiki said there was a couple of hundred shots in the vanilla game, and another 200 or so depending on perks in Broken Steel.

It uses the same ammo as the alien blaster doesn't it?

100 hours into this game and I've either missed the firelance event or it hasn't happened yet.

The real concern should be why you'd want to use a gun over a sword that is on fire.

I wish F3 had F1/2's crazy physics. Hitting someone with a sledgehammer and watching their limbs explode from the torso is all well and good, but I miss the days of smacking someone in the chest and just watching their whole body fly backwards 30m to slump into a wall.

Also, there's the fact that, unlike the normal Alien Blaster, there is no wreck--there's just the smoke trail, the explosion, and then the Firelance and the alien rounds fall out of the sky. The rounds are easy enough to find, being neon blue and all, but I hear that it's best to bring Dogmeat with you (or go and get him when you see the explosion, one) so that he can fetch the Firelance with a minimum of fuss.

Unless it's on top of a building like Phoenix-D said, at which point you're kind of screwed, though at least you get some more alien ammo out of the deal.

Is there a way to get an evil karma hit from the Synthetic Man quest? Or a way to obtain the unique laser rifle through evil means? I have been playing on a new game, trying to take the evil path, and it is very difficult. Not difficult from a challenge perspective, but difficult because a lot of the time, I cannot discern what the "evil solution" to a quest is. Many quests seem to have only positive or neutral karma rewards.

For example, I did the Agatha's Song quest. If you return the violin to Agatha, you get a positive karma adjustment. If you sell the violin to Abraham Washington, you get no karma adjustment at all. What does a guy have to do to get an evil karma adjustment for so many of these quests?

Murder isn't really a good way to get negative karma. Neither is theivery. You have to kill a WHOLE LOT of people to make any sort of real impact on your karma standing.

And I haven't done Stealing Independence yet, so I don't want to kill Abe. Speaking of Stealing Independence, is there an evil solution to that quest?

You're going to max out your karma either way incredibly easy so it's really not worth worrying about to the degree that people seem to. If you're in negative karma at all, you're getting all the "benefits" of it. Relax about always trying to find the evilest way out.

See, the problem is, I'm not evil karma. Every time I complete a quest, I get either a positive adjustment, or no adjustment at all. I haven't blown up Megaton yet, because I'm still doing Moira's book quest. I guess perhaps what I should have done is talked her out of writing the book and then just blown up megaton at like level 3.

But there's just so much more XP to be had if you complete her book.
