    BAM!

This game is getting hate even on a topic like this one! Obviously you people don't fully understand. Can you not see the generic, blue-armored figure holding up what does-not-seem-to-be a very dangerous sword?

An overworld-on-rails? A mediocre quest for the crystals of power? Angsty teens saving the world? A game box that ACTUALLY ADVERTISES as "Entry-Level Role-Playing Adventure"? A "FREE STRATEGY GUIDE OFFER" implying that there is, in fact, some strategy somewhere in the game? o_O

Does this all not clearly communicate the inherent awesomeness that is FINAL FANTASY MYSTIC QUEST?

Hey, you know what, I was FIVE when this game came out. I hadn't even realized this kind of game existed until I somehow got my hands on it. My mother took it away because she thought the "Crystals of Power" were satanic. ;-)

Hey brah don't think you've got enough emoticons in there

What's more interesting is that they apparently got the Dragon Quest guys to do the art for that one, so even the look was different.

I've got slightly better memories of it, because it was the first RPG I ever beat (and it was supposed to be, Japan either released it as Final Fantasy for Beginners or as Final Fantasy for Idiots), but man it does not hold up in any way compared to most, if not all, other mainstream JRPG's.

Well, actually it was released in Japan as Mystic Quest- Final Fantasy USA, which I guess to the Japanese isn't much different than "Final Fantasy for Idiots". *sigh*

The Mystic Quest battle music is better than some full games I've played. I've definitely just sat and listened to it on repeat for at least half an hour, at least once in my life. So good.

I fail to understand how that track (and the boss music, which I find inferior but seems to get plenty of love from others) can be so awesome while most of the rest of the soundtrack is pretty much generic yawnfest.

Regarding the game, I went back and tried playing it once years after its heyday (I did beat it originally too, but too early to really know anything about anything), and I vaguely remember that there was some ridiculous bullshit section where monsters would use status effects that essentially meant LOL U DED if they hit and that either that segment was one with only the main character, or the effects hit often enough that it was ridiculously hard even with both characters. I don't remember the details but I'm pretty sure I ended up putting the game down because it was bullshit hard and that clashes with just about everything I remember about the game from back in the day and everything I've read about it. Anyone know what might have been up with that?

(Obviously, the replay was also quite a few years ago, probably around 8, so I don't remember much at all clearly.)

I once found a PS2 game in the bargain bin called Naval Ops: Warship Gunner. It was only 10 euro/$, and I saw that it was made by KOEI (of Dynasty Warriors fame). It had WW2 ships on it, so I thought : "What do I have to lose?".

It was, for me, the best game I ever had on the PS2! o_O:lol:

It is basically a shooter; you float around shooting other ships. But you earn money/XP, with which you can reasearh/buy bigger guns/hulls and so on.

So in the beginning you have this little ship and you are so happy that you have these guns that fire in a nice curve. I decided to research a bit more in the defense department, getting better armour and so on. And then I spotted the upgrade "Energy defense shields". I was all like o_O because I was convinced that I was playing a shooter with WW2 technology.

    No! :winky:

So I started putting research in offense... Ooooh... Rockets, nice! OMG! Lasers! What is this? HOMING LASERS! 8-)

This is a thoroughly enjoyable game and I wish that KOEI would make a PS3 version...

They did make a sequel for it on PS2, and another one that's sort of more strategy since it's top-down and has a lot lof destroyer escorts.

Most of the games I wanted to mention have already been:
    Advent Rising
    Hybrid Heaven
    Enter the Matrix
    .. and many others.

One that hasn't been mentioned (that I saw) was Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter. Such a good game.

Wonderful graphics, branching paths, party members, and story. And, if you've beaten it once, it's fairly easy to go back through and see new cutscenes, or level your characters up with the saved party experience; so easy, in fact, that's how it was designed - it's difficult to go through in one run due to the way the Dragon works. Walking along? That increments the D-Counter very slowly. Transforming into a dragon? D-counter++! And then you have to attack as the Dragon, which skyrockets the counter.

But! By beating encounters intelligently, you receive party experience, which carries over if you die, if you haven't used it. And by talking to the banker, you can retrieve your Sword of Power +5 from him when you have to start over.

Encounters are on-the-map, not random. Weapons are awesome because they have powers built into them. And you can assign powers to them, I think. Had an interesting battle system also: you had a pool of AP, and could spend it to walk, but the game isn't hex or square based, so you had to be careful, and make sure that you could still attack after walking.

My only complaints with the game are a) more paths, that are accessible at low D-Ranks; b) random types of enemies; c) More weapons!; d) more spells!

Basically, exactly what they gave me, but more of it.

I liked the Watchmen game, which everyone hates. As a brawler, it's really solid, it's just one of those genres that's very one-dimensional and therefore doesn't score well, but it's got a solid combat system that's satisfying and visceral.

Also Rebel Assault 2 was the shit, seriously. Played the fuck out of that as a kid.

Related to one of the games I mentioned in the other thread, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. It seems to be the most hated game in the series, yet I found it to be one of the most enjoyable.

Forgiving while still difficult enough to feel like a Fire Emblem? About time!
Giving you the chance to catch up in levels if you fall behind? That makes characters received after the initial batch more viable for use!
Branching character development? That's even more replay!
A world map to explore and do side stuff as you wish, instead of at the game's discretion? More power to me!

All of those seem like it really improved the formula, yet it seems like others think that it completely ruined the game. It's not like the game was ever holding a gun to your head, saying "GRIND YOUR FUCKING HEAD OFF AND REMOVE THE CHALLENGE OR ELSE!"

I have to second The Sacred Stones. Really, it was the only Fire Emblem game where you could use a Shaman. Otherwise some Cavalier or Thief would spawn, zip over to your once-protected mage, and deliver the coup de grace.

In most Fire Emblem games, I just never even bothered to use a character with weak defense.

I also liked how it made thieves viable for use again, both in that you could make sure that they kept leveled up and that if you didn't feel like going for another crit hit machine if you already had enough, you could go for making them even better at stealing stuff.

Hell, the game actually made it viable to have more than one thief actually reach class upgrade.

Continuing on the Unlimited SaGa mention, I really liked it as well. A lot of it probably has to do with me playing more table top games than I have in the past, so it just kind of clicked with me as it's one of the few JRPGs that actually felt more like I was playing a D&D session. Plus, the roulette isn't nearly as bad once you realize that it's pretty much giving you direct control over your critical hits and it's really easy to get the result that you want.

    Schadenfreude (German)

n: satisfaction or pleasure felt at the misfortune of others.

    pacman2_snes.jpg

Pac Man 2: The New Adventures, otherwise known as Schadenfreude the Game, is a totally overlooked work of brilliance. Reviews were generally positive, but few even bothered to review this game. PM2 rarely gets the recognition it deserves on lists of "top obscure games" or the like. Really.

I rented it once when I was 8 and was hooked. I found the Genesis version and a Nomad at a garage sale (score!) a few years later, and probably chewed through 45 double-A batteries playing this game.

So awesome. Screenshots look like a platformer, but its more like a combination of Super Mario, Lemmings and The Sims.

This game is just dripping with personality. Which is good, when the only thing you can do is point for Pac Man and hit things/people with a slingshot.

    Just remembered another good one

They probably haven't aged well but the first Syphon Filter was great but for some reason even some people who liked the original hated its sequel, admittedly it's pretty short but it's still good stuff though the games did kinda go to pot after 2

I've heard some good things about the PSP Syphon Filter game though and if I ever do get round to getting a PSP they'll be some of the first games I'll get for it

About the PSP Syphon Filter games: The first one is alright, and the second one is really good, though the underwater section is kind of a bitch.

Am I reading it wrong, or is that game called "WinBack?" :?
Damn skippy it's called "WinBack". I've got it on the N64, and it rocks.
Fuck yes, WinBack was excellent. It could never be considered a 'deep' game by any stretch, but I'll be damned if it wasn't a blast.
