Hiro's father's history is pretty much accurate, and will serve as our base line.
Hiro was born some time in the mid to late seventies to a black middle-aged GI father and black mother who we know nothing about because she died shortly after Hiro was born. Hiro's father, being of typical military temperament and unable to deal with the loss of his wife, was extremely abusive. Lacking a comforting mother figure, Hiro created one in his mind. This sort of escapism gradually spread, and were heavily influenced by his father's war relics, spawning a sort of vague Orientalism that eventually came full circle and caused him to think of his mother as Asian, though why he would choose to make her Korean is beyond what is revealed in the novel. While most of his friends were talking about soldiers and superheros, he would fantasize about ninja and samurai and worlords and kung-fu. He was aware of the Kung-fu action movies of the late seventies and early eighties, but was much more influenced by the anime explosion of the late eighties onward. His Oriental fantasies were hereafter refined into a much more mundane, but more pervasive Nipponophilia. He was still mostly functional, though his obsessions made socialization difficult. A lonely, cloistered virgin, the internet had a great appeal for him. As a screen name, he chose "Hiro Protagonist", a pun constructed from the first name of his favorite angsty anime character (if a later setting is accepted, Hiro Yuy from Gundam Wing seems likely, but an earlier character seems more probable) and a synonym of it's English homonym "hero". He takes great pleasure in explaining this at every opportunity.
The internet gradually came to replace his life until his life outside of it became unbearable, so he ceased to live it. In his mind, real events were replaced by much more exciting futuristic counterparts. His dead-end delivery job for an Italian-themed delivery job became a life-threatening adventure bankrolled by a Mafia front, all the gated communities he could never afford to even wander near became enclaves of independent nation-states, his storage facility "apartment" became a common refuge of the teaming masses, reporters became CIA cyborgs, muscled bikers became nuclear-powered Aleut mercenaries, clean needle programs became Pentecostal world-conquest conspiracies, and so on. Since his name belied his mundane origins, completely unfitting to this exotic world, he adopted his screen name in common practice.
I got kinda creeped out and stopped working out the details when I realized that YT's exploits were also products of Hiro's imagination, and so he must be having regular sexual fantasies about a fourteen year old.
The urban dictionary entries for Ganguro [strike]was very positive and informative.[/strike] was not written by someone who's roomate dated the abysmally stupid creatures.
