Filthy Assed Goddamned Virus Thread

Like the title suggests, I got a virus. It's called System Security, it pretends that it's an anti-virus program. It won't let any other program run, not even the ctrl-alt-del task manager. I booted up in Safe Mode and that seemed to keep it from activating, but you know, safe mode. I looked around online and found a couple seemingly reputable programs that claim they can remove it, but none of them seem to account that the fucking virus won't let them be installed, let alone run. Anybody got a clue?

Edit: I'm running Windows XP.

When you double-click something to run it, does it pop up with a window that says something along the lines of "Chose which program you'd like to open xxxxxxx with?" If so, download and run this - http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip It's a registry fix, I had to use it a few days ago to fix the same problem with the same virus. :edit: Goes without saying, do all this in safe mode.

When not in safe mode, if I try to run anything, double clicking an icon or not, a little red System Security alert icon will pop up from the lower right hand task bar and say "blank.exe is infected!" and then not allow blank program to run. I'll follow your advice, many thanks

And now I can't connect to the internet with any browser, and under Network Connections in the control panel there is nothing at all. I'm on a wireless connection, would that have anything to do with it? Goddamnit do I ever hate computers.

Edit: Can't connect in safe mode that is.

Looks like it might be time to back up your files and wipe the hard drive

Safe Mode disables network drivers, so you can't use the internet while in Safe Mode. To access the internet, use "Safe Mode (with Networking)" instead of "Safe Mode".
