attempting to explain to people who think this guy is offensive that he's making fun of Americans and not Kazakhs or gay Germans is an exercise in futility
I've never heard people outside of the Kazakhstani government at Borat's release not understanding that he was making fun of Americans though his primary goal was to expose and discuss antisemitism.

When he first developed the character, he wasn't even Kazakhistani. He was Armenian, or something.

Yes but close to the movie's premier the Kazakhstani government expressed denunciations as the Borat trailer depicted their country as a 5th world dump.
The movie "tries" to show how stupid homophobia is, by showing how people's attitudes change towards a person once they realise he/she is gay. However, the chances of a homophobe watching this movie and actually picking up on that, are slim to none.
The continual annoying ads on tv are enough to make you want to take a high powered rifle and camp the ticket kiosk, but I suppose that would make one a homophobe.
I didn't like it at all. It was just shocking for shocking's sake, and not that funny. Basically, if you watched the trailer, you got 80% of the funny and the remaining 20% isn't worth the hour and a half.

I did not know that. And find his schtick tiresome or not, you got to admit the gentleman can act. I didn't even recognise him in Talladega Nights.
