    There is a small minority of people who are poor as a result of laziness and lack of drive to make their lives better. However, many more are poor because circumstances of birth screwed them over, not to mention life taking the time to kick them in the junk on a regular basis. People are often not in control of their circumstances! Health, economy and other things can conspire to completely fuck you over, as my family discovered when I was young (we were living paycheque to paycheque, eating cheaply and living well below the poverty line). When you're working three minimum-wage jobs to support your family, it can be very difficult to find the time to get an education, for example.

    I live in Canada, so the state subsidizes those extra letters. Plus all the extraneous 'u's.

    For giving me room and board for so long I promised my parents they wouldn't have to pay a dime for my college education.

    I was able to keep that promise and luckily fully paid off my final semester right before the economy went to shit and I lost my sweet sweet job.

    Now I am an unemployed 22 year old with a degree in computer science.
