First, if someone wants to get into your house, a trivial thing like a locked door will do nothing to stop them.

But yeah, people do bad things. There's only so much you can personally do to prevent those things from happening.

My belief is that everyone, ultimately, wants to be a good person.

The intelligence of that person determines their ability to decide what is right and wrong, however. Now, I have had a few drinks tonight, but I'm completely serious when I say I support a procreation license based on intellectual capacity.

It may be an assholish thing to say, but whenever I hear somebody talk about how they lost faith in humanity it always sounds egocentric to me. Hundreds of millions of people have been murdered throughout history, lived in slums with nobody to give a shit, etc. and then something bad happens to you or somebody you know and suddenly our entire species is unbearable?

Anyway, I deal with such things by having a passive and relaxed philosophy for life. Well, I alternate between that and a "Fuck yeah, human species!" way of thinking if I'm being particularly happy about life (Say, I just watched Gurren Lagann).

I like to find the humour in the horrible events. Example: "Father Maguire, a generous priest and pillar of the community, died today after the large crucifix mounted on the wall behind his podium fell over during his Sunday morning mass, crushing him".

Now, that's pretty terrible, but it's also kinda funny. The trick is to have a sense of humour when it comes to this crazy, fucked up world of ours.

I don't really get distressed about the human species as a whole, but then I don't hold us up to a high standard in the first place. We're born, we build stuff, we kill each other, we procreate, we die, and all without affecting the universe as a whole in any major way. That's the way every species works really, so if I get pissed at humans for killing each other I may as well condemn all life and that doesn't get me anywhere at all.

so, the other day i was in friendly's enjoying ice cream with a friend. suddenly, people burst from the back of the store, yelling. apparently, a man had waited in the bathroom, and then grabbed the cash off 4 unattended tables. he ran to his car and peeled out. he got away with like $180 total, and no one was hurt.

at first, i thought it ironic. "he robbed a place called friendly's. that's like trying to set disneyworld on fire!"
after the initial humor wore off, me and my friend walked outside. later that night, my friend got a phone call.
his grandmother had been murdered by a person trying to burgle her house.

now, these two events have nothing to do with one another

    are you sure about that?
did your friend get bitten by a spider lately?

Now Local, I'm going to try saying some crazy things to you, and you listen crazily - how about it?
Flank the sun and the moon, embrace space and time, and meet like lips, settling in the slipperly murk where servants exalt each other. Ordinary people slave away, while the sage is stupid and simple, participating in ten thousand ages and unifying them in complete simpicity. The ten thousand things are as they are, and so are jumbled together.

    ...

Don't make a name for yourself or follow a plan. Don't take responsibilty or claim knowledge. Thoroughly embody what can't be exhausted and wander where you cna't be seen. Take everything you get from Heaven, but don't consider it gain. Just be empty. Perfected people use their minds like mirrors, not welcoming things as they come or escorting them as they go. They respond without keeping, so they can conquer without harm.

    How about it?

hypothetical: you leave your keys in the door to your home. someone discovers this along their way and notes they have free entry into your home. how comfortable are you that they will do the 'right thing?' regardless of your presence in the home?

    Not comfortable at all.

As for coping... I guess I don't believe this is a world full of cocks. There are a lot of them, sure, but if I wouldn't murder your grandmother, there's a possibility you wouldn't murder mine, right? The fact that it's only a possibility would be why I wouldn't feel comfortable in your hypothetical scenario. That fact's also the reason I sometimes smile at strangers.

I don't hate the world. I don't hate an individual unless they give me reason to. I don't have such reasons from every single member of our population.

I suppose I could hate the idea that every single person has the potential to be a cock. But I don't.

I don't think I get so depressed about people being cocks. I'm more depressed about how incredible stupid a vast majority of people are. People are fucking dumb! I take solace in the fact that we've now developed the ability to annihilate the entire human race and if all goes well it will be used, because humanity is just too dumb to be allowed to survive.

Humanity continues to exist more in spite of itself than anything else. People are selfish, self centered dicks who will degrade to the lowest socially acceptable level they can get away with. If you need something to cope with the fact the people around you would gladly be part of a mob that hangs you from the nearest tree for any number of reasons given half a chance then here is one I recommend. Just keep telling yourself that there are only eight real people on the planet, and everyone else is here to stop you from finding the other 7 and escaping.

Realisticly you cannot change the fact that an awful lot of people are stupid, malicious, and thuggish.

I used to subscribe to the school of "everybody's decent deep down" but then a load of messed up stuff happened- the NiceGuy I was dating raped me an his friends essentially covered up for it because it happened in their house and at the time they were running a home tuition agency and were worried about how it would look for them if the police and or media got involved. Well, major headfuck for a while right there. I'd known these guys 5 years and they didn't hesitate to fuck me over to preserve their own self image. They probably still think they're pretty good people over all, is the thing.

And that's why people do fucked up shit, not to be evil or to be mean- just because they think they can get away with it. And afterwards they either don't care, or rationalise it and lie to themselves until they were the good guy/victim. There's also a whole other class of people that will just be violent and destructive for no particular profit or gains, but rather just to see what things look like when they're broken.

In the end there's only a few things you can do:

    1. Really hang on to your sense of humour about the screwed up things that will happen to you.
    2. Accept that you cannot control other people's actions, but if you get the opportunity, call people out when they do screwed up stuff.
    3. Be an exemplar- have your morals, your integrity, and stick with it. Never compromise yourself on the off chance you'll "get away with it".
    4. Remember that we're still fucking lucky to have what we have compared to the vast swathe of history, and the messed up stuff a lot of the world still has to like with.

Oh and find good friends that you really can trust.

Realize that the world is not full of cocks. If the world were full of cocks who steal tips off of tables and break into homes and kill people, society would have a very hard time existing. Most people struggle to do something approaching the right thing most of the time and often do not make it. When they don't it is often because of pretty desperate circumstances in their lives.

As to your hypothetical, I'm actually pretty comfortable a random person would do the right thing, or at least, not the wrong thing. If someone randomly saw the keys in a door of a house, or a car, or whatever, how many do you think actually go in and steal something?

No, the people who make me lose faith in humanity are the ones who profit legally through suffering. The people who have set up systems of law and finance that allow them to operate at an abstract, macro level and remove them from the day to day consequences of their actions. Not the guy who steals a hundred bucks from a convenience store or an ice cream parlor.

    Yes.

Most people don't steal because they know stealing deprives others of things. That is why they don't steal. That is how they're taught why they shouldn't steal. It's why people who don't steal will pirate software and be ok with that - because they're not depriving anyone of anything, in a direct sense.

I mean, we don't bring this up enough, but society works because on the whole mankind wants it to work. Because people, generally, act with empathy and kindness towards others. Is it any wonder that our best regulatory fuck ups tend to happen when the culture in business, for example, shifts towards "get what you can while you can". Sure, we can attack that problem as much as we want, but we fair a whole lot better when culturally people are being told to be emphatic, not ruthless.

Do you not murder because you're afraid of the punishment? Can you think of a scenario where you would kill someone, and does the punishment figure into that?

I don't necessarily buy this, given issues like internet piracy and office theft. Both are relatively anonymous crimes, incur little chance of punishment and are extremely prevelant.

Murder isn't really comparable to theft and isn't what I was talking about in my first post.

Edit: Of course, I suppose some people might view piracy and office theft as taking from a faceless, nameless entity and not an actual victim. Hell, I dunno.

It's a complicated example which will turn into a "piracy is theft" thread. But it doesn't deprive anyone of physical property. It may deprive them of potential property, but that's a more abstract notion.

There's no way to argue this without it getting extremely complicated though: on the one hand, people steal laptops from my university office. On the other hand, despite the apparent ease of this, it is still comparatively uncommon. There are no cameras in there - it would be trivial for me to steal a lot of things without getting caught. And yet I don't. Why?

It only takes a few bad apples to ruin the batch - it's selection bias plain and simple. Once something is stolen from someone physically, it's gone and oh the world is so terrible. But we don't remember all the time leading up to that, or more importantly, how many people didn't steal it. Upwards of a thousand people could go past an attractive item and not take it, yet we wouldn't notice or care because the point is (subjectively) someone did.

I never locked my dorm room door in college. In fact, I rarely shut the door, even when I left for class.
On more then one occasion we've managed to just leave the garage door to the house wide open with the front gates open.

I'm generally a cock, and a self centered asshole.

But I try to cope with those types of situations though a large amount of apathy, and doing my part to make the lives of the people I meet better. Whether its through being polite and curteous to the server at a restaurant, or leaving a big tip, or helping friends and family with moving or home improvement projects or general home maintenance.

I think cars are less likely to be stolen than most things because the average person has no idea how to turn a profit on a stolen car. If a person saw an iPod out in the open, however, I think they'd figure out what to do with it pretty fast.
