Well, there is Dr. Mid-Nite. He's a Christian, but isn't terribly heavy handed with it. Plus, he's got that great dynamic with the atheist Mr. Terrific.

Aren't most superheroes some kind of Christian, albeit not in an overt way that requires them to change their costumes?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there are a lot of religious super-heroes, they just don't go all retarded about it. Off the top of my head, Huntress and Blue Devil are christian, while Ragman's Jewish.

It would have been nice to have a superhero who believes in Christianity who

    a) doesn't turn out to be a religious zealot stabbing people with flaming knives
    b) isn't a retired 80 year old someone who inevitably dies in a story arc by a villain like Joker or Zsasz.
    c) doesn't get corrupted just for plot value

While a white suit would be a bit ridiculous, making her grounded in faith would be a nice addition to the character.

I've lost a lot of faith in Gail Simone due to Wonder Woman. Her arcs are really up and down. She's not very consistent at putting out good stories.

Wonder Woman has been good, Birds of Prey was great, Secret Six is great. Not consistent my ass...she's one of the best writers at DC.

So yesterday I stumbled upon an old issue of The Batman Chronicles. Inside was Paul Pope elseworlds story set in fascist Germany before WWII. The style of it was hark back to the style of the old Bob Kane / Bill Finger stories. It made for a really interesting subversion of Batman's origins.

All in all one of the best Elseworlds stories I have read.

Yeah, I originally created him for Holey Crullers #1 back in 1994, and then Chris Bachalo redrew the story for Common Grounds #3 (and did one hell of a job).

He's not bitter about anything, but dissolving everything you touch makes personal hygiene a Herculean task...

That was collected in Pope's Batman Year 100 trade. That's a great standalone story there.

    Nguyen is cool.

He's on my list of people to get commission sketches from. Probably just Penguin chillin in the Iceberg Lounge or something with Batman getting turned away at the door.

And Chris Giarusso as well, where I'll ask him to make a mini-marvels strip that makes fun of One More Day like he did with Planet Hulk/WWH.

i met him once at the seattle comicon. real nice guy. i had him autograph a copy of wildcats 3.0 and when he saw it he went "whoa, blast from the past!"

i also later overheard him and ed brubaker talking. bru was trying to get him to leave dc and come to marvel (half-jokingly, maybe?) and dustin said "no, they told me they'd let me draw batman!" to which bru repiled "man, that's what they tell everybody."

edit- same comicon i saw ed brubaker giving jamie bamber (apollo from BSG <3<3<3) copies of Criminal. i hope he liked them.

But they told him the truth, and Batman was made better because of it!

Brubaker also got to write Batman so it's not like they were lying in either case. Tsk tsk Bru.

I finally checked Nguyen's website just to make sure he wasn't a friend of mine from elementary school (same spelling and everything). It wasn't him.

How was Brubaker's run on Batman? I've heard of it, but I wasn't reading any DC at the time. Is it worth tracking down?

His stuff ran from around 580-607, and it had some good Scott McDaniel art (if McDaniel couldn't be on Nightwing this was just as good).

It was good, for the most part. Brubaker had the best handle on Bruce getting angrier and angrier until it seems like he just snaps during the Bruce Wayne Murderer/Fugitive story. Issue #600 was a bit of a push to have Nightwing and Batman fight each other, but overall it was a good run.

Brubaker had to wrap up some stuff early in the end because Loeb and Lee's Hush story was coming up.
